After thinking about this for a while, I've changed my mind back to a definite HELLLL NO! For anything like this going down.

Even if Green is the third string runningback, I wouldn't classify him as dead weight. His contract is heavily incentive based. At third string the Browns won't be paying him that much to be extra insurance to Droughns and Suggs. Suggs is prone to injury, and Droughns was hurt last year too. I don't see the point in moving up a pick if we can make the same deal without giving up anything. Either we don't make the trade, Green stays, Miami takes Smith, and we trade from #3. Or, we do make the trade, lose Green, make the same trade that we would've at #3, and Miami still takes Smith. Pretty sure we're gettin' screwed with scenario #2.

Except you can't make the same deal from 3, the second SF takes the QB of their Choice... Miami is trading down so someone can take Edwards.... Once Edwards is gone, your two first round picks for the 3 are probably bye bye... because the teams that would trade up want a Edwards, not a QB-- at least as far as I can tell...

Not really true, just your trading partners change. If Edwards is gone there are still 2 players that people will trade up to get. First off Mike Williams becomes the last WR available. Washington still might want to trade up to get him to prevent us, Chicago or Tampa Bay from grabbing him.

Also Ronnie Brown is still there. If you are Arizona or Tampa Bay and Ronnie Brown is on top of your board they will look to trade up to get their #1 RB.

Trading up to #2 to be able to trade down I can only handle if we only have to give up William Green. Anything more is not worth it.

But if I had my druthers I would rather have Mike Williams on the Browns over Braylan Edwards (the 2nd coming of Quincy Morgan)

Except Washington would be the team that Traded up to get Edwards.

If SF takes Smith and Miami trades the #2 to Washington, the Browns are screwed- at least in the sense that they'll be stuck with the pick. THe Vikings are going to gamble that they can get Williams at 7... and if not they are going to trade down to where they think Troy Williamson will be.

Basically... if Smith and Edwards go 1-2 the Browns will be stuck hoping the Chargers want to make a move for Williams.

On the other hand... if the 49ers do take Rodgers... then the 3pick might have some people on the phone, but we'll probably get a first rounder this year and next year...or something like that.

i say if smith and edwards are taken 1-2 then we look to trade out obviously... brown and mike williams are some players some guys want

If no one wants to trade I say you go with brown... savage said he would take the best player available and at that spot in that scenario brown is the best player available

If Washington gets #2 to get Edwards Minnesota might still want to trade up to #3. While popular opinion says they want a WR, there are some rumblings they might want Brown or Benson to get a true #1 RB.

There are options, Savage just has to be creative to force other teams to act on it. I would not be surprised if a San Diego move happens and the Browns take Ronnie Brown intending to keep him (yeah right) and scare a team to trade for him. But if the Browns picked Ronnie Brown would you be happy if he is our #1 back this fall?

Good Shape

Relax Brown's fans you are sitting pretty at 3. I have said from the begining of the thread. Edwards is the best pick if the Browns keep 3 but i would really be looking to move down, moving down will fill more needs and you still get a a incredible need player or playmaker between 4-10. This also gives the Browns alot of options and good pr to boot. You still can get Williams and a second rounder???? NO BRAINER and if there is no takers you get Edwards. I personally think Antrell Rolle is another great player for the Browns. How can you screw it up if your between the 5-10 slot. The Browns have alot teams to court Washington,Oakland and Minnesota being the one's I would talk too. I would have been all over the press telling everyone and their mother I was taking Edwards then start talking trade day of the draft. Miami has got to take a rb if they keep the pick..Cmon man please Nick is playing alot of head games. The Fins need a rb and Benson and Brown should be the pick. That leaves the Browns holding the Edwards lottery. Browns are in good shape to pick up a couple more quality picks. My Bengals are in alot worst shape at 17.

Dolphins will be trading down to 5 through 7 within the next 10 hours. A little birdie told me. If they can't get that spot they are going to draft Alex Smith if he is available. The 49'ers are playing the "we want Braylon" game so they can get Minnesota or Washington to trade up. Neither the Dolphins or 49'ers are going to benefit from keeping their picks at 1 and 2. Miami just traded Surtain for a second-rounder. They are looking at JJ Arrington and Ciatrick Faison in the second round. If they can trade down they will probably pick up a running back between 5-7 and draft QB in second round (McPherson or Frye).

All you need now Brown's fans is for your GM not to blow his wad too early and muck up the rest of your draft!

I don't think there's any benefit to figuring this out... because I'm guessing everything will change first thing in the morning...

SF can't get a deal done with Smith... so they're going to bail... and then all the guessing goes caput...

Bernie Kosar would not be shocked if the Browns made a draft-day trade today, and he said the team should be under no pressure to take a quarterback in the first round.

"I don't have any real inside information," said the former Browns quarterback. "But I am certain that Miami and the Browns are open to trading down -- and they both may do it."

Kosar believes that Tampa Bay (No. 5) is looking to draft a quarterback, probably Utah's Alex Smith. And Minnesota (No. 7) wants a receiver to replace Randy Moss.

Miami has the No. 2 pick, the Browns are at No. 3. Kosar believes both want to add draft picks, and both are in an admirable position.

"I'm very excited about this draft for the Browns," he said. "There will be teams that want their pick. I think with Phil (new general manager Phil Savage), we can get some players that make a difference. Let's face it, there are a lot of opinions on this draft. Mike Williams is rated the No. 1 player in the entire draft by (ESPN's) Mel Kiper, and other teams don't even think Williams is the best receiver in the draft."

Meaning?

"I don't think there is a big difference between Braylon Edwards and Williams," said Kosar. "So if I want a receiver, I can trade down and still get one of those guys -- or someone else I want."

Kosar said he likes both Williams and Edwards. "Trying to pick between them is splitting hairs. Both would really help the Browns."

He also said not to be surprised if the Browns worked a trade, then took a defensive player lower in the first round.

"They are a team that needs help in several areas," he said. "That also gives them a lot of options to really pick a good player to make an impact right away."

Kosar was speaking by telephone from Florida, where he lives. He has no official role with the Browns, but says he has been in conversation with owner Randy Lerner and team president John Collins.

"They are great guys," he said "I hope we can work something out."

For Kosar, the key will be if he wants to move his wife and children from the Miami area to Cleveland. His wife is a Florida native.

Kosar's business interests include ownership of about 50 football Web sites across the country, including Bernie's Insiders and Bucknuts in this area. He said he still follows the game closely and wants the Browns to get it right.

A former Browns quarterback, Kosar knows the position well and has strong opinions.

"Teams at the top of the draft can make a mistake thinking they must pick a quarterback," he said. "Usually, if a team is drafting in the top five, it has a lot more wrong with it than a quarterback. When you inject a young quarterback into that situation, he usually plays too early, gets beat up and it's a problem."

Is that what happened to Tim Couch?

"To an extent," he said. "But I had Couch ranked well behind (Donovan) McNabb and (Daunte) Culpepper in that (1999) draft because Tim was a system quarterback at Kentucky," said Kosar. "He threw a lot of short passes. To be good in the NFL, you have to consistently be able to throw down field."

Kosar didn't spend much time discussing the draft's top two rated quarterbacks -- California's Aaron Rodgers (expected to be the No. 1 pick) and Utah's Smith.

He was more interested in Auburn's Jason Campbell and Akron's Charlie Frye -- both expected to be available in the second round.

"The Browns have really looked hard at Campbell," he said. "I know they also like Frye. I like them both. If you look at the history of the draft, there's a good chance one of these guys will be better than either quarterback at the top of the draft. (Miami coach) Nick Saban said only 30 percent of first-round quarterbacks really make it, and that seems about right to me."

Kosar seemed very impressed with Frye.

"He played on a team with not a lot of talent, but he wasn't afraid to throw down field and try to win the game," he said. "I like that. I don't like a guy who just checks down and makes the safest throw all the time. Charlie led them to some big wins. I understand he has tremendous character and leadership, something you can't teach."

Kosar talked about how Drew Brees was a second-round pick of the San Diego Chargers, the same as Brett Favre. He mentioned how Tom Brady was taken in the sixth round.

"I'd love to see a draft like San Diego's (in 2001) when they got LaDainian Tomlinson in the first round, Brees in the second round," he said. "That's how you begin to build a team."

He praised Savage's decision to trade for Trent Dilfer to take over for Jeff Garcia at quarterback.

"The Browns need a veteran to stabilize things and to help the young quarterbacks," he said. "One of the biggest blessings to me was coming to a team with Gary Danielson (back in 1985). He taught me so much."

Kosar believes Dilfer can fill that role for the Browns.

"Suppose they draft a Frye or a Campbell," he said. "It's tough just to play any rookie right away. Trent has a Super Bowl ring. He is a tough guy and well-respected. He can teach a quarterback things that a coach can't -- just as Gary Danielson did for me."

Kosar paused. "It not just about the quarterback," he said. "You need to get talent around the quarterback. I think the Browns understand that, and it's why they'd like to trade down and get some more picks. They know they need players."

If the Browns get a chance to trade down for extra picks, I say go ahead, they need help everywhere.

the browns need to trade down... if miami trades down then that makes the browns chaces of trading down a little bit more slim... the way i see it though i kinda like their chances because there are three guys int his draft teams will trade down for... one of the WR (edwards/williams whoevers left), Ronnie Brown, and Alex smith

One of those guys will fall to the browns... this is going to be one of the most interesting drafts in a while...

I don't know what the Browns are going to do, but this year's draft is much easier to watch since Michael Irvin isn't there hyping the 'U' every 5 minutes.

Braylon's the pick

The Browns are talking to SF re: Alex Smith? That seems unnecessary - they would have to give up too much, and they need a lot of help.

Here comes the commish...Braylon Edwards? Oh man, have fun rooting for him and Winslow, Browns fans.
