If Kelly does go to ND does anyone think it would definitely be in his best interests to keep Tenuta, if possible? The other really interesting questions become, when does Kelly go for the green? Before bowl, after bowl? When does Kelly then start recruiting for his future gig?

Assuming Kelly does go, and assuming he does the honorable thing, and does not recruit for the Irish till after the bowl game he will need someone to act, credibly, on his behalf. Possibly Tenuta could do that for him. (In other words, I don't completely buy the description regarding Tenuta in this as credible information, at least till otherwise verified, though the limited number of responsible targets is somewhat discouraging).

Honestly, their best bet would be Solich. He's won at OU. He's had time to establish relationships with Ohio football coaches. The UC job is step back into the BCS.

I find it unfortunate that fans - particularly the bandwagon variety - can't enjoy the exceptional success of a given program in a given year and appreciate it for what it is rather than argue that they are the next big thing.

I have read posts by OSU opponents from NC St, Wash St, Texas Tech and on and on all arguing that they are rapidly climbing to the top of the mountain that is CFB. They witness the good fortune of a one time combination of talent, senior leadership, schedule and good coaching coming together in one wonderful season. But they can't distinguish it from the a ongoing base of talent, expectations, and investment that it takes to sustain a major program.

I don't think Cincy will get their top 5 finish this year, but if they do it will be two decades before they see another.

The best scenario for UC fans is for them to pick up another good coach, but one that won't bolt in 3-4 years. The Xavier analogy is actually a very good one, although they've hadmore success than UC in their respective sport. I'm a big Xavier fan, but I didn't cry and whine when Matta and Miller left. It sucks, but Xavier is still a stepping stone program as well.

You can't serioiusly sit there as a UC fan and expect, after just your thrid year of 10+ wins in the program's history and expect coaches not to jump at big program offers. If UC somehow gets another great coach if Kelley leaves, he'll probably leave in 3-4 yrs too. It comes with the program.

I'm not so sure Kelly will leave right now. Sources say he already spoke to the players and said he loves Cinci and doesn't plan to go. Not that it means much, this has all been broken before, but I've kinda felt that ESPN and the media have been fueling this one for awhile too. Regardless, he's meeting tomorrow with the ND AD I think to hear the plan just as Harbaugh did/will.

If Kelly would end up taking the job, I can't imagine he'll retain John Tenuta/Corwin Brown. That dual defensive coordinator situation didn't pan out a bit, they were no better off when Rick Minter was DC essentially. Tenuta's LBs weren't shabby, but he had a lot of talent there with Brian Smith and Teo. His defense on a whole was pretty horrible overall.

There would be a few other coaches that would be worth retaining, however. I believe Bernie Parmalee coaches TEs, he obviously did a good job developing the position and increasing the potential of guys like Anthony Fasano, John Carlson, and Kyle Rudolph. Rob Ianello would also be a good coach to retain for his recruiting skills alone. He was known to bring in a lot of the better talent the last few years, he was also the WR coach and did pretty well there with guys like Maurice Stovall, Tate, Floyd, Rhema McKnight, and Samardzija. Powlus did a pretty good job molding Clausen. I don't believe he was there until Quinn graduated however, he would be good to retain so he could continue to work with Dayne Crist who will be Clausen's replacement next year. The only other position coach I could see retaining would be Tony Alford, the RB coach. I think they brought him in this year, and while the running stats weren't gaudy, they improved this year (Part of which was some better production from the offensive line after a strength/conditioning change in the off season). Armando Allen was the leading rusher with 700 yards and he was injured roughly half the season.

Defensive line wasn't very impressive in most of Weis's career. Defensive backs routinely were picked on, partly because of a horrible pass rush. Offensive line was up and down, better this year, but that was after they finally got a front 5 of all upper classmen. Even then, their tackles were piss poor at pass defense. Special teams was pretty inconsistant.

He went undefeated (in a BCS conference), and barely got a sniff as to the chance at a championship game.

That's like doing the best possible job you can, and not getting a chance at the big goal. No way Notre Dame goes undefeated and left out of the title game. No way.

The key word in these statements is always something like "plan" or "intention". Those can always change.
