Out of curiosity, how much pressure is on Kelly if he stays. Right now, he's the toast of Cincinnati. He's also been described as a me-me-me kind of guy. He demands what's best for his program and the rest of the athletic department and university as a whole be damned.

If he stays, he will go into next season having demanded and gotten the following:

  1. His second contract renogotiation in three years
  2. Siphoning of funds from other sports to fund his (money losing) football program
  3. In a university with severe financial problems, the taking on of $10.5MM in debt to fund his practice facility
  4. Quite possibly a commitment (again, at a university that can NOT afford to be doing this), a stadium expansion that could approach 75-100MM dollars.
Expectations are already delusional. If Kelly stays, they'd be even more so.

What happens if it all doesn't pan out? What happens if he's the next Schiano? Will the university step in and show some fiscal sanity and reign in the football program. If not, are Fingerhut and the Governor forced to get involved and stop the spending? Do the fans blame the university administration (echoes of Nancy?) and blame the President for not giving Kelly enough? Do they turn on Kelly?

It could be a real soap opera in the 'hood should Kelly stay and go through a spell of mediocre seasons.

Yep. Expectations are for national championships, overturning years of disrespect from Ohio State fans, etc.

Those expectations can never be met there. If they build the bigger stadium, they'll never fill it.

It's tragic really. That's Ohioans taxpayer money.

I think if push really comes to shove they would probably try to get some agreement with the Bengals for use of Paul Brown Stadium for UC home games. There just isn't room @ Nippert to build it up over 50k capacity. (From what I understand)

From every signal and sign the guy is on his way out. He's been given ample opportunity in the last few days to deny his interest. He has not denied it at all. In fact everything he's said and done leads me to believe he's ghost.

If he gets an offer.

Aren't they struggling to fill Nippert? What would they do with a larger stadium?

Exactamundo, Ringo.

By all accounts, Kelly runs a clean program, has solid graduation rates and apr, and keeps his kids out of central booking. That he's doing this at what is essentially an urban commuter school with a history of running renegade sports programs is doubly impressive. There is another, darker, side to Kelly however. Now that Kelly's been given his practice facility, he's already hinting that a stadium expansion is necessary to keep him. Like I said, Kelly does not give a damn about the fiscal stability of the athletic department or the university.

He's building an empire, and how many slaves (or Olympic sports programs....or academic departments) get trampled constructing his Great Pyramid is not a consideration.

If we have to foot the bill for Cincy to build a stadium it can't fill to keep a coach that's eventually going to leave, I'll be pretty pissed off.

Yeah, careful with tense there, 10

Yes and no. The Johnny come lately's have sold out the back half of the schedule. And the first 4 game average was just under capacity.

It's a sellout after sellout era for Cincinnati football | cincinnati.com | nky.Com

"Nine of the top 12 crowds at Nippert, which was completed as a full stadium in 1923, have occurred during the Kelly era. This includes last week?s stadium-record turnout of 35,100 for the nationally televised game against UConn.UC averaged 31,964 fans in six home games in 2008 to establish a new single-season attendance record. The Bearcats played before an average of 33,382 fans in their first four home games this season, putting them on pace to shatter last season?s mark.
Next week?s home finale against Big Ten Conference foe Illinois also is sold out, making it the fourth sellout this season."

However your larger point is completely spot on. A larger stadium isn't going to sell out. No way they could fill Paul Brown to capacity. It's double what they draw now. But does Pitt fill to capacity @ Heinz Field? I only brought up the PBS idea because it seems like a more plausible option then trying to stack more seats onto Nippert which is boxed in and has no room for expansion.
