In response to 5-star WR Deontay Greenberry flipping to Houston today
Coach Brian Kelly wanted the focus to be on the 16 players who signed, rather than the one (5-star WR Deontay Greenberry) who didn't. "I used to have a saying about players like that and that was I'd rather play against him for four games than with him for four years," he told UND.com

Just heard today that CBSSports had pulled this quote from some blog post that incorrectly attributed the quote as Kelly speaking about Greenberry in particular, taken out of context. The blog writer admitted to making a mistake, they did not post the full sentence. This info today was reported by Dan Wolken and Eric Hansen. Here was the conversation:

http://www.und.com/allaccess/?media=297738
Kelly: "Talking about those 16 it's important that we not lose focus on their day, and the exciting day they had. The one that did not, obviously when you talk about Notre Dame those weren't the right things for him. Thats fine, we have no problem with that. We want the right kind of guys, and Notre Dame has great and unique distinctions, and those have to be seen as being important in your life. Those 16 guys that chose us saw how important those things are in their life at Notre Dame, and thats why it's an exciting day for us."
Reporter: "You've already discovered this, and I've learned it over 30 years, if you come here you have to want to be here. If you don't want to be 'all in' here it's not going to work. So it's better to find out on February 1st than on November 15th."
Kelly: "Yeah because it's going to take too much time and effort. If a kid comes here and it's not the right fit, those aren't going to be good times for the player. I used to have a saying when we were recruiting reginonally on a kid and we were making a decision, that I'd rather play against him four times rather than have him with us for four years if he's not the right kind of fit. Again, lets think about the 16 guys that understood Notre Dame and what we're about, and lets talk about them as it relates to this class."

So it wasn't a comment on Greenberry in particular, it involved wanting the kids to feel right about their decision and not having someone signing if Notre Dame wasn't for them. This doesn't change the fact Kelly still probably had an aneurysm when news came out that Greenberry flipped in the 11th hour to Houston :wink2:

You don't get participation trophies for bowl games?

Hell, you'd think the other team would at least give them one for being courteous enough to be so utterly over matched in a bowl game that far exceeds their talent.

That or a "better luck next year" trophy. A better one would be "No one cares that your mediocre football program plays on NBC". But I guess that would be frowned upon.

Every day we see more evidence that ND has hit a ceiling on how far they can rise with the coaching and recruiting.
They are Northwestern with a better football history.

Every day we see more evidence that ND has found another level on how far they can fall with the coaching and recruiting.
They are Minnesota with a church theme.

The old "don't schedule ND" argument by some in the Big Ten is nearly as old as college football itself. I can't recall if it was conference loyalty, conference self-interest, or anti-Catholic prejudice, or some sort of combination (maybe I'll look it up), but it's been there since the turn of the LAST century or thereabouts.

The reason Big Ten schools continue to do so is the same reason most schools do what they do re college football: $. Either directly or indirectly, such scheduling is good for their programs and enriches their brand.

Re Ohio State and ND, I hate Ohio State. No excuses, no qualifications. I have personal reasons and football reasons and just reasons in general equity. I hate Woody Hayes, John Cooper, Earl Bruce, Jim Tressel, and now Urbie. ND is a greater football program, historically, without all the low entrance qualification, sleazy alumni, and wimpy administration advantages Ohio State has. Even now, Ohio State schedules mostly sorry OOC teams, when combined with a weak conference schedule (still one of the weakest and one in which they normally duck one or two of even the better conference teams) amounts to an overrated program. This is the main reason they get schooled when they play SEC teams. I would root for the Al Qaida Eleven against Ohio State every single day of the week and twice a day during Ramadan.

I love how ND fans always bring up SEC teams(we sure got schooled against Arkansas), yet conveniently forget that their overrated program has been pimp smacked by tOSU the last 3 times they've played.

So, Kelly said,

"Again, lets think about the 16 guys that understood Notre Dame and what we're about, and lets talk about them as it relates to this class."

Does that about summarize what they're all about?

ND fans are more delusional than I thought. Didn't they win their first bowl game since '94 versus a terrible Miami team in '11? O Wait, they beat Hawaii in '08.... Hawaii.

They're certainly on their way back to National prominence with that win over Florida State in '12.... O wait.... sorry, they lost 18-14...... So well, they're doing something over there in Indiana... Something cool. I hear the Superbowl is there this weekend. That should be fun........

Our grad rates could be better, but they're respectable and improving every year.

Our APR has been top 10 in the country for the last two years.

While some athletes are certainly steered towards easy majors, we don't hide out half the team in certain majors and we don't create majors that aren't available to the normal student body. We've done quite well over time with academic all big ten and all america teams.

Given the above, I'll take a 65% graduation rate national championship program over an irrelevant program with an 85% grad rate every fucking day of the week.

Notre Dame is Vanderbilt's program with Pitt's history.
