History

The original Department of Education was created in 1867 to collect information on schools and teaching that would help the States establish effective school systems. While the agency's name and location within the Executive Branch have changed over the past 130 years, this early emphasis on getting information on what works in education to teachers and education policymakers continues down to the present day.
The passage of the Second Morrill Act in 1890 gave the then-named Office of Education responsibility for administering support for the original system of land-grant colleges and universities. Vocational education became the next major area of Federal aid to schools, with the 1917 Smith-Hughes Act and the 1946 George-Barden Act focusing on agricultural, industrial, and home economics training for high school students.
Federal Role in Education

i think the evolution and present role is different from the historical view. (ie the dept of homeland sec existed during ww1, yet resembled nothing like todays version that is post 9/11 entity). comparing todays dept of edu to morril act setting up land grant colleges, or home ec for women and factory/farming jobs for ment in the post ww2 era dont match with todays dept of edu. thats just me...

And by and large our public schools are failing. Imagine that.

Can someone catch me up here? I've read this whole thread and based upon that it appears I'm a facist brainwasher as my child goes to a Christian school. True?

I guess it really depends on who you ask.

My daughter sure as hell isn't going to any public schools. It would be a disservice to her to not get her into the best situation I can....

i think that all depends on your district. i never understood the parents who paid 10k for their kids to go to private school in my neighborhood. my h.s. was top in the state and people still paid to go to private school. made no sense to me.

Let me re-phrase, there is no way in hell my daughter is going to public schools in Springfield or anywhere else near Dayton.

If we happen to move back towards Columbus, then maybe. We'll have to see.

Mike, I thought Centerville schools were still excellent, along with Beavercreek. No longer true?

They are for now, I just wonder what they'll look like in 10 years with Dayton being the economic pit of despair.

either way I'm more likely to move towards Columbus than towards Dayton in the first place.

Just to play devil's advocate for a second here. What year were you born in Jake? Wasn't it some time in the 70's? :tongue2: If true that would seem to disqualify you from judging the changes to our education system. Somebody like Cinci(an educator) would have a better handle on the changes and their worth.

When you were born should have nothing to do with it. You can look at things from the past and comment on it, people do all the time. Sure maybe Jake had a year wrong, or maybe he was talking about teacher unions, not really sure, but just because he got one fact wrong doesn't mean he is totally wrong in what he says.

I have a question for you while we are at it,,,totally off subject. Why did you turn off your pms and your wall on your profile? While we are at it, why did you turn off your rep? But you obviously turn it back on and check it since you have a tendency to ding people back when they ding you.

Your rambling and incoherent.............again.

It must really frustrate you that my wall and pms are off. And rep. Get over it.

Columbus is no better, Mike. I would argue worse, in fact.

Do your kids a favor and steer clear of Southwestern and Columbus schools.. go pay the taxes in Hilliard, Dublin, Worthington, Arlington etc.
