Bracketology and Selection Sunday Discussion

#9 and one of 4 bubble teams:

Let's face it, this year's basketball team really isn't that good. There are 9 conference games to go and 4 are at #9 MSU, at #15 Purdue, at #24 Maryland, and at #19 Wisky. Baring a fantastic run in the B1G conference tournament, I'm thinking it might take a 6-3 record (which isn't likely) for the remaing 9 games to get in with a 21-10 record.

OSU this year is like the team equivalent of an "AAAA" baseball player - successful against mediocre competition, but struggles mightily vs true upper division teams.

If I wasn't an Ohio State guy I'd find our inclusion in the field to be a joke. Does this look like a tournament team to anyone? Really?

Super size conferences and evaluating teams based on "top 50" wins is giving us more mediocre teams from power 5 conferences, and the power 5 are cool with it.

The last 5 years we've had at least one at-large team with a losing record in their conference get handed a bid. All told, those teams have lost 80% of their MM games. Why? Because they weren't that good - that's why they were under .500 in conference. Looks like we're headed for even more of those teams this year.

"They have 3 top 50 wins!" They also have a lot of top 50 losses, so their wins are more a product of having several chances than actually being a tournament worthy team. If a team can't at least win half of their conference games they shouldn't even be considered for a bid.

There is a reason "bubble" teams have 10-12 losses on their schedule each year. They are inconsistent. They might win a few vs. some good teams but they also blow a few they have no business losing.

The overall strength of the B1G and their really impressive start to the season is what is keeping them in the conversation. I could see them getting in going 5-4 down the stretch and winning a game in the B1G Tourney, riding the coat-tails of 8-9 B1G teams getting in.

Any realistic OSU fan doesn't see this team winning 2-3 games in the tourney, even if they were to make it in. I always want them in the tournament field, even if it is only for one game. For selfish reasons, I do enjoy when they get a high seed in the NIT, just miss the tourney, and host games at St. John Arena.

Listening to the talking heads go on about Indiana is exactly what I'm talking about:

"They beat Louisville, Marquette, and Michigan State!"

They are 10-10 overall, 3-8 in conference, in the rest of their games. But those 20 games are less important than the other three because "top" whatever wins are what it's all about. So let's get those 10th place teams from the Big XII and B1G in the tournament. :roll1:

IU doesn't have a good case to make the tournament, especially after the loss today. They are going to have a hard time making the NIT.

Yup.

Are we a good team? Not really.

Do plenty of not-so-great teams make it into the Dance every year? Yup.

We only lost once in the non-con and we play in one of the best (if not THE best) conferences in the country. While a conference like the PAC-12 might only get 2-3 teams into the Dance, making more room for B1G teams.

We still have a lot of work to do. Thursday's game against Illinois will be tough. This team can't afford to look ahead more than one game at a time. They can easily lose to anybody, and Illinois is playing so much better than our first game against them.
