BP Vacation Thread: What To Do Where You're Going

Thanks for the detailed reponse! Notes added in bold below...

I tend to be a pretty rigorous pre-travel researcher, but I always like to check in with the BP crowd before I go, and it sounds like we're on the same page here. We have little girls, so of course there will be the princessy stuff, but I'm still pretty excited about all of it.

Did you purchase a dining plan? If so, I suggest booking reservations in advance as they fill up quickly.

Thinking this year we're just going to pack up the minivan and head east until 70 ends, drive up the coast into Maine, then head back home and catch Niagra Falls on the return leg. Leave on a Friday and get back the following Sunday. Spend ten days seeing where the roads take us.

Anyone know of some quality bed and breakfasts in New England?

I have spent too much time in New England. I have been to a few bed and breakfasts in ME, and have done the works there really, and been around all of that. I spent four summers in the White Mountains and Acadia, etc. with my mom, who was a naturalist, and I had many more visits to Maine (for whatever, kayaking or vacationing) and Vermont (snowboarding) while living in the Northeast. Tell me where you are going and I may have something to recommend, pro or con.

Ok, need some DC hotel advice. I'm leaning towards the Hampton Inn Crystal City, as it's actually in our price range and just 2 blocks from the Metro station. However...my mom is now joining us in DC, which gives us the choice of being just off the Mall. I just have a stubborn side that absolutely wants to keep the stupid parking fees to a minimum and also balk at paying as much or more for 3 nights as we did 7 nights for our Disneyland trip last year. I'm looking at the Hampton Inn near the White House (free breakfast, if I'm paying that much, I'm getting something decent for free, damnit! ). It looks like the walk from the top of Lafayette Square to the Washington Monument is about the same distance as Lincoln to WWII, is that about right? One thing I'm trying to balance is walking distance, mostly due to my wife's bum left foot (she's had cysts surgically removed twice and other assorted issues with it). There is the Farragut West station at the top of the block the Hampton Inn by the White House is on, though, so if she's having foot issues there's that.

I'm still very unsure at this point, though. The White House location is tempting to me, as it gives me easier Mall access for sunrise/night photos without worrying about the Metro (also, if I do the White House tour, the hotel is convenient to be able to drop and pick my gear back up). If any of you have a preferred hotel or advice, I'm open to it, as long as we're not talking Ritz/JWM/Sheraton level places.

How about Disney World? For the dads who have taken little kids there (and during, say, Spring Break) any hints/tips for making it out alive? We're going to be doing all 4 big parks, so just wondering what is the most fun (for dad and for the whole family) and where best to grab a cold one along the way... ?

So we did survive Disney World over Spring Break, and it really was so great I would go again every year (if cost wasn't a factor, and there weren't so many other cool places to travel too).

We spent 8-10 hours a day (rented a stroller) in all four parks over 5 days, and there was still so much we didn't get to see - and tons of stuff I could do again and again. The Magic Kingdom was perfect for our girls, we are all big fans of the Disney canon, and we did just about everything in Fantasyland (twice) and Adventureland (Pirates is still a great ride), and got some facetime with pretty much every princess etc (the in-character "cast members" are so consistently good). The way the PhotoPass program ties in with the MagicBands, so you're getting all these great family pics sent to the app a few minutes later, and they add all sorts of graphics and animation, is really amazing. Ending every day with the Celebrate the Magic light show, fireworks and parade, I mean it really is all pretty magical.

So we knew all the rides would be great, but I was especially impressed by all the live shows: Festival of the Lion King in Animal Kingdom was great, of course the Frozen singalong was a must at Hollywood Studios, and Turtle Talk w/Crush at Epcot was one of the funniest things we saw all week. The Fantasmic show at Hollywood Studios at night was probably my favorite experience of the whole trip, what a great show.

Even being spring break, the crowds were not unbearable, if you schedule the FastPasses right and get started first thing in the AM with a plan. Hollywood Studios is probably an exception: it was just literally packed and would probably have been more ideal another time of year. But I think they are expanding more Star Wars/Pixar stuff - and my girls haven't even touched Star Wars yet so there's still all that for another visit down the line.

PRO TIP: As for grabbing a cold one, we were pleasantly surprised by one unadvertised perk that went with club-level rooms: while they have open beer/wine for a couple hours in the evening, the staff will go back into the kitchen and grab whatever you want, any time of day. Two more beers in plastic cups for the pool? Thank you very much.

Looking for advice for a quiet, nice place to stay near Sandusky, maybe on the beach or Lake, in mid July.

May drive to a restaurant or something in Cleveland but do not want a party or bar scene. Staying with parents and wife. Mom is very limited physically with M.S. Also sensitive to heat, which is why we are thinking of the beach.

We just spent a week up about 10 miles west of Port Clinton. Super convenient to get to Magee Marsh, but probably more like 30 minutes to Sandisky along Rt 2. We've had tremendous success with VRBO.com and homeaway.com --- I think those might be the same site these days.

Thanks. Sandusky is more of a general idea/location, as it's somewhat central for all parties (central ohio & SW michigan).

I guess it depends on what you will be doing. In Port Clinton, Lakeside, Sandusky, I would expect it would be more expensive, but more convenient to things to do. The place we stayed was out a ways, so it was about 15-20 minutes to get into PC, maybe 30-40 to Marblehead, and probably close to an hour to Sandusky, but.....werent really interested in the touristy stuff, so it was no problem.
