BP - Terrible Twos - Discussion

Clarity

I went about this all wrong. And I have a methomps to thank (sincerely) for helping me realize that.

Not because the thread brought in a BII discussion. That wasn't what I was looking for before, but it's not the issue. The problem is how I went about trying to get the information I want.

I don't want anyone to list pros and cons.

What I do want is a spirited discussion on how we would like to see BP improve.

So no laundry list. Let's just talk openly about how to get better.

Obviously the new server is right around the corner. So site performance is something that's been addressed. What else?

The reputation system is a given. I will dedicate an entire thread to that by itself.

So those two aside. Let's talk. Ideas, issues with suggestions (as constructive as possible), etc.

For the sake of preserving coherence, I've quoted my original post below, and there's a link to the old thread below that.

Discussion related to the second birthday announcement.

Above and beyond anything else you want to say here, tell me what you think the 5 biggest negatives with BP are. Then tell me what you think the 5 biggest positives are.

The latter is so we can improve. The former is so we can do better. There's a difference between the two, I swear.

I liked the ideas for extended image and video hosting...a library of BP clips and images would be something every Buckeye fan could use.

Beyond that...I think we can maximize utilities we already have: vBook, Rep, completion of Stat Engine, the Chatroom....

Oh....and you know I've been wanting that whiteboard to talk Xs and Os

I think more co-op efforts with "sister-sites" such as O-state.com would be nice. Exchanging blogs and posting together started to form a community and really amped up respect between the two fanbases. I think that the more we have rational conversation between fans, the more resources and opinions we will gain.

I'm still pumped about the Stats Engine...that was a great idea C.

I am curious about the querying layout of it. I think it would be nice (in addition to a simple format for basic users) if we could have a place where we could download the table structure (as PDF) and we could write our own SQL statement to be executed against the database from the site. The number of stat views that could be looked up from here are going to be infinite and I think there are enough advanced users here to make it worthwhile.

I hope that wasn't off subject, I thought it was a good enhancement.

I had done a lot of thinking about a graphic forum gallery, and I think that a video forum could work on the same system.

Basically, there is no reason to lose the current graphic forum, especially because it is a great way to track down images and also receive feedback during the middle of an art project.

However, there needs to be a way to click thru a set of thumbnails of all of the artwork without having to read each thread individually. We could perhaps allow comments for each artwork, however the idea would be to allow you to browse all of the wallpapers in one to two clicks rather than a couple dozen.

This system, as mentioned before, could lend itself nicely to a video gallery.

The benefit to this would be the ability to sort the gallery by rating, popularity, category, etc. We are having a lot of new designers come on board and we will continue to expand our wealth of graphic work.

BTW, I'm eager to check out the stats engine and many of the other ideas mentioned. This is kind of my dream for one tiny area of BP, and between myself and the wealth of other graphic minded folks, we would have no trouble implementing and cultivating a gallery system.

Don't know if this is possible or not, but I would like to see a "work mode" version of the site. By that, I mean it would be nice to see all of the text, and none of the smilies, avatars, pictured signatures, etc... Some of the signatures (The "got milk?" comes to mind[certainly not complaining about the pic]) make it difficult to "fuck off" while at the office. I hate it when I have to try and explain...."I'm not wasting the work day browsing porn. I'm wasting the work day browsing Buckeyes information."

This would be a HUGE resource for buckeye fans, especially us photoshop nerds. Having a central location to track down clip art would be an incredible feature. For instance, I have found a site that has a number of different official OSU logos (in vector format - ie a transparent perfectly scalable logo), and it would be awesome to store these and other big10 teams in an official logo sub-category.

I think even the photoshop-illiterate would enjoy a place to nab OSU clipart for bday parties, invitations, cards, or whatever else.

Hey man, I had the same problem, just turn off the signatures in your User CP and all of that shit disappears. The smilies still appear but the big annoying sigs go away.

I'm a school teacher so you can imagine explaining I would have to do when a woman in a pink bikini top with hug tits shows up on my screen saying "Got Milk."

This place does more than you think... go to UserCP and "Edit Options" (left menu). The profanity filter could use some tweaking... "ass" and "bitch" aren't great to have up there at work, and it's odd to have teams winning ***les. :p (Whoops, Thump beat me to it. Slow typing...)

What else to improve... minor issue, but I know I live off the "New Posts" screen and only occasionally go directly to the forums. This means I haven't seen the forum rules in ages, and if this thread weren't bumped I'd'a missed Clarity's announcement. I wonder how many of the newbs who post without regard to forum rules actually never saw them because they came in from another direction?

The whiteboard would be fantastic. I know I'm way behind most of you when it comes to visualizing plays, and once that is online I can pester people to help me understand. Heh heh heh.

I think the mods here do an amazing job, and if anything show remarkable restraint in how they handle problems that arise too often. I actually think they don't get enough support from the rest of us. Too often you see statements about not caring if a mess is being made because "that's what mods are for." I cringe everytime I see something like that and feel sorry for the poster's poor mother... We have a tendancy to forget that the people who watch over this place and make it nice for the rest of us are taking on responsibility in the place they come for relaxation. Let's not take advantage of this goodwill by making their (unpaid and often thankless) jobs more difficult.

That's all the two centses I can come up with now but I'm not awake yet. :p

I come in directly to the forum list and bypass the front page.

Something else that would be nice especially in the off season and I think this is the way that it was last year, make the Open Discussion forum posts show up on the "Most recent" posts list.

how about figuring out how to make images show up on the front page blogs (where the helmets are supposed to be, tshirt blog, etc.)? I think that would've helped out with t-shirt sales and it will also attract more people to read the content that is there. Or is that something that'll be taken care of with the new server?

Either turn off sigs in your control panel, or try to use the archive version of the site, though it's read-only so you won't be able to post. Just add the word 'archive' to the end of the forum address; it should work on any site that uses the vBulletin software.

One observation to add re: BP right now would be that the bulk of video is copyrighted. I like watching highlight clips of the Bucks as much as anyone else, but if BP becomes too big to fly under the radar, there cannot be any video clips ripped from broadcast TV. Even discussions about recording/trading TV broadcasts will have to go.

I think my only complaint regarding usability is with the number of forum categories, and the required registration to some forums. Prune the number of forums down by AT LEAST half, there are too many. Re: registration I'm not a fan of registering for the site just to post, then having to PM mods etc ... to gain access to some of the forums. It's especially a pain since there are a number of thread ghosts that are left when something is moved to one of the restricted/invite only forums. Just get rid of them all or include those when a person registers.

All-in-all, I think it's a usability issue. There are too many hoops to jump through to get access to everything on the site, and unless a person does that than BP is relegated to having a bunch of "clubs" or "cliques" with the members only forums and hierarchy of who controls what. If BP is the anti-Bucknuts, then these private forums and the clique mentality has to go.

I agree, non-members can't even view the General Discussion Board without being a member.
