Boston lost the mental edge they had on teams. No one is calling Kendrick Perkins Bill Russel but his no-nonsense attitude and physical play was something that brought an extra edge to that team.
I think you're under-estimating how important he was as an anchor to that team defensively. He protects the paint as well as anyone in the NBA today.
And enjoy the walking turnover that is Kristic.
I think you're overlooking the long term situations I described in my post and focusing solely on this season. I think everyone who is flipping out over the deal is doing it. There's nothing to suggest the deal was made for THIS season and no one is saying Krstic is Perkins' equal. Ainge has to consider the future as well.
Had Perkins signed his $30 million/4 year extension he is likely still a Celtic. The acquisition of Green and the 2012 first round pick are about life beyond 2011. Perkins is not currently playing as his surgically repaired knee is giving him problems. He can't protect anything when he's not playing and there's no telling if he'll ever be the defender he was before the injury. As such, there was no reason to offer him more than what he turned down.
Boston only won one title with him, but I'm sure this trade will be the popular rationale if they don't win without him. They're not a lock either way.
