Boise State 33, Virginia Tech 30 (final)

I watched the game last night and was most surprised by Virginia Tech's stupid mistakes and by how much pressure Boise was able to get on Tyrod Taylor with only a four man front. He's also got a bad case of happy feet to go along with that bad o line. That said, I thought Boise looked pretty good. But I crack myself up hearing everyone mention NCG with them. If winning your first game is what grants you the right to play for all the marbles then you obviously have no right being there. They likely won't face a ranked opponent the rest of the season. I'd still be pretty shocked to see them get in the NCG over a one loss team like Bama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Florida, or Texas.

Anyways, I've got to shake my head a little bit at Herbies post game comments saying something to the order of: "If you don't think this Boise team can play with anyone, on any given night, you obviously haven't been watching college football." I don't think anyone denies the fact that Boise can play. But can they do it week in and week out in a conference that hits you hard every week? To me, Boise is a lot like Michigan this year. Flashy with some solid positional players but they are thin (depth wise) and flashy. That flash turns to darkness real fast when you are mentally and physically spent for 10 weeks at a time. One week and we're calling them national title shoe ins? [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAN9ORwsiVA]YouTube - Then Crown Their Ass[/ame]

Exciting college football game. The oddsmaker's had the line at 2 1/2 or close to that. How do they know and make it so close? Both teams made plays and mistakes. But that's the excitement factor. I don't know if Boise State deserves their ranking. For that matter, I don't know any college team in week 1 that deserves the ranking, but the game had plenty for me.

I still don't care for the Blue turf. Thank goodness is wasn't at Boise. Heck of a game.

Ok boise...great win...now go suit up in 6 days and play Iowa, then a week later Wisky, then a nother week Nebraska, then OSU....

I think this is the argument. Anyone can win a game...going 3-1 with the scheudle above is better than going 4-0 vs any 4 teams on BSU's sched.

Boise St is also 4-1 vs Top 10 teams since 2000.

That was a great game last night. Both teams are going to very good this season. I'll call it right now and say Va Tech wins the ACC...they looked very impressive. Boise St deserves respect for what they have done, not just last night, but for the last 3-4 years. I'm not sure what else people want to see that Boise St is the real deal and should be mentioned when it comes to national championship contenders. They go out and beat highly ranked teams in bowl games, and now in the regular season and they blow out the teams in their conference (which any top team should do).

Now if Bama, OSU, and BSU all do undefeated, i'd say BSU is out. But if Bama or OSU (or both) lose a game and BSU goes undefeated, they should be in the NC game hands down.

People who use the cupcake schedule, or mid-major, as an excuse...i don't see you saying the same thing about college basketball. If you're complaining about Boise's schedule, then shouldn't you be up in arms about Butler making the NC game? What about George Mason making the Final 4 a few years back, or UNLV winning it all 20 years ago? Playoff/tourny or not, it is the same concept.

The times of sports with mid-majors have changed. Teams from these lower conferences can, and do, compete just as well as teams in the top conferences. Boise St and TCU are showing that we need to look at the non-BCS conferences alittle bit more then we have been in the past.

Not even remotely the same concept. Basketball has a huge playoff field and gives teams with much smaller rosters the chance to win their way to a title. Boise plays nine cupcakes a year and has one or two early-season games as their only basis for earning a quality bowl berth, which is the polar opposite of the college basketball setup.

because college basketball has a playoff system. nobody is ever going to complain about Butler making a run when 64 teams all start at the same spot and have a chance to win.

you say 4-1 vs top 10 teams. What's the breakdown of when they played those teams? I assume yesterdays game was included. So what about the other 4 games? Were they all bowl games? Bowl games with 30 days to rest, recover, game plan, and get healthy? My guess is that gives them a better chance than playing top notch opponents every week like ohio state, Bama, and Florida do.

just don't buy into them. If they go on and win the NC this year then I'll have no choice but to eat some crow. But right now, I am not a fan.

Yes they do compete with the top teams in the country.....for one game. That's the point: there's no way they could survive the Big Ten, SEC, hell even the ACC with their depth. I'm not going to reward a high school team with a trip to the D-1 state championship game because they ran through Mudflap County D-3 undefeated. There are divisions for a reason. The strength of schedule matters and as impressive and well coached as Boise is, they don't deserve the same respect as the teams that grind through a tough conference all year. They should try to get into a BCS conference if expansion continues in the future.

What if we had the internets back in 1917...?

"Sure they look great playing cupcakes like Case and Oberlin every year...."

"So what if they won back-to-back Big Ten titles? Let's see what they'd do in the Ivy League."

"They're a one-man show. When that Harley kid graduates, they'll go back to being nobodies."

"Who wants to play in a cow town like Columbus? They'll never be able to get the top recruits to go there."

[Michigan fan] "You've still never beat Michigan!!! LOLZ Suckeyes! Go Blue!!!1!!1!"

Point being, it takes a long time to build up a football program. Ohio State didn't really establish itself as a true national power until the 1940's, when they won their first national title (1942) and had their first Heisman Trophy winner (1944).

Let's not forget that Boise State didn't join the "1-A" ranks until 1996, since which time they are 135-42 (.763 winning pct), which places them fourth in the country behind Ohio State, Florida, and Texas ... and that record includes losing seasons in 1996 (2-10) and 1997 (5-6). Since 1999, they have nine 10-win seasons. Since 2006, they are 50-4 (.926), with two perfect seasons, and two BCS bowl wins.

Now let's look at how the other teams that recently "stepped up" from 1-AA have fared:

Louisiana Tech (1989): 119-122 (.494), zero BCS bowl appearances
Nevada (1992): 115-100 (.535), zero BCS bowl appearances
Arkansas State (1992): 69-138 (.333), zero BCS bowl appearances
Louisiana-Monroe (1994): 62-121 (.339), zero BCS bowl appearances
North Texas (1995): 58-118 (.330), zero BCS bowl appearances
Alabama-Birmingham (1996): 68-94 (.420), zero BCS bowl appearances
Central Florida (1996): 81-85 (.488), zero BCS bowl appearances
Idaho (1997): 53-100 (.346), zero BCS bowl appearances
Marshall (1997): 102-61 (.626), zero BCS bowl appearances
Buffalo (1999): 31-99 (.239), zero BCS bowl appearances
Middle Tennessee State (1999): 61-69 (.469), zero BCS bowl appearances
Connecticut (2000): 62-59 (.512), zero BCS bowl appearances
South Florida (2001): 69-40 (.633), zero BCS bowl appearances
Troy (2002): 55-44 (.556), zero BCS bowl appearances
Florida Atlantic (2005): 28-34 (.452), zero BCS bowl appearances
Florida International (2005): 14-45 (.237), zero BCS bowl appearances
COMBINED: 1,047-1,329 (.441), zero BCS bowl appearances

So from the above list, you've got two middle-of-the-road Big East teams (UConn, USF) and a bunch of whipping boys that routinely get thumped by major programs (last week, for example: Ohio State 45, Marshall 7; Clemson 35, North Texas 10; Auburn 52, Arkansas State 26).

Even teams like Temple and Rutgers, who started playing "big boy" schedules back in the 1970's, still haven't been able to develop competitive programs after nearly forty years.

What Boise State has accomplished in just 15 years is quite amazing, and they are for real.

Won't disagree with the first part. The second part is "to be determined". Boise's starters have proven that they can play with some good teams. The coaching staff is one of the best in the country and the players are very talented/disciplined. Their schedule is still a joke though.
