TULSA, Okla. -- Bob Knight criticized the NCAA and called the rule Ohio State football players broke when they sold and traded their personal memorabilia "idiotic."

The former Indiana and Texas Tech basketball coach, and an Ohio State alum, spoke to reporters Monday night before the Henry P. Iba Citizen Athlete Awards ceremony, where he was scheduled to deliver the keynote address.

"I understand what's happened and there was a rule that was violated," Knight said. "But it was an idiotic rule."

Bob Knight set to be honored by alma mater
Posted on: June 29, 2011
By Jeff Goodman

Bob Knight will finally be honored by his alma mater.

Knight?s son, Pat, told CBSSports.com that Ohio State will honor his father when Lamar plays in Columbus on Dec. 20.

My dad?s excited about it,? Pat Knight told CBSSports.com.

Pat Knight had been the head coach at Texas Tech for the past three-plus seasons, taking over in the middle of the 2008 season after his father retired.

The younger Knight was fired after last season, but wound up getting the job at Lamar in the Southland Conference.

Knight said that the previous staff had already scheduled road games at Kentucky and Louisville. He needed another ?buy? game and asked the current players at Lamar what team they wanted to play.

They agreed on Ohio State, which also happened to be the program that Bob Knight played for from 1959-62. Knight was a reserve on the 1960 national championship team.

Pat Knight then called the Buckeyes, who agreed to the game ? and also recommended honoring his father either prior to or at halftime of the game.

``They?d been trying to get him back up for a basketball or football game, but it just hasn?t happened,? Pat Knight said. ``So this will be fun, for him to go back and them to honor him.?

Loyal to his roots
Bob Knight always has had a special place in his heart for his hometown of Orrville, Ohio

Orrville, Ohio: Home of Bobby Knight

ORRVILLE, Ohio ? The ranch house on North Vine Street, its backyard bordered by railroad tracks, offers the same view today as it did a half-century ago to a crew-cut kid who left the simple home and found fame. To the south stands a white water tower beaming this humble town?s name in red letters, and a few blocks north of the two-bedroom home lurks a monstrous utility plant, still belching steam into the sky.

A few years ago, however, the owner of the house peered out his front window and saw something odd.

Four men were in a car, and one was pointing up at the red brick house. They appeared to be strangers, but like fog burning away, one began looking familiar.

He was the man pointing at the house, the one doing all the talking, a big fellow with silver hair and a dimple.

Recognition came to Bill Hendricks.

?I thought to myself, that?s Bob Knight,? he recalled.

The famous coach was showing friends where he grew up, where his pride first mattered.

Knight always will be identified with Indiana, for it was during his 29 seasons with the Hoosiers that he experienced his greatest triumphs in a legendary college basketball coaching career that began at Army in 1965 and ended at Texas Tech in 2008.

Yet, the Basketball Hall of Famer always has been a Buckeye, and not just because he was a tenacious sophomore reserve on Ohio State?s 1960 national championship team led by Jerry Lucas and John Havlicek.

Ohio State Buckeyes to honor alum Bob Knight on Tuesday night
Published: Monday, December 19, 2011
By Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer

Columbus -- Ohio State was on guard for a spy in practice this week. An invited, esteemed spy.

The Buckeyes will honor Bob Knight, the former OSU player and men's college basketball coaching legend, at tonight's game against Lamar, a team that is coached by Knight's son, Pat.

"I think he'll be at practice," OSU coach Thad Matta said Tuesday. "We've got to code everything because his son is coaching the other team."

Matta laughed, but his respect for Knight is impossible to miss. Ohio State is holding a luncheon in Knight's honor on campus this afternoon and then will recognize him before the fans at Value City Arena. After joining in the celebration two years ago honoring the 50th anniversary of Ohio State's 1960 national championship team, of which Knight was a member, Matta said he "always wanted to get him as involved as we possibly could," with the Buckeyes' basketball program. Before the Buckeyes' game at Kansas on Dec. 10, which Knight called as a commentator for ESPN, Matta had him speak to the team.

Matta grew up in Illinois as a huge fan of Knight and Indiana basketball when he was coaching the Hoosiers. Matta said he loves being around Knight for his lessons on basketball and American history, and for his sense of humor and compassion, a side that he said some don't get to see in Knight.

Matta said he wants to stay connected with all the alumni of the basketball program, but that Knight's accomplishments obviously make him stand out.

"Getting to know him as I have, his passion for this university still holds strong," Matta said. "That, to me, is what this university is all about."

Bob Knight Lauds Matta, Meyer Combination
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? During his halftime speech at Value City Arena Tuesday night, basketball legend Bob Knight praised the job Thad Matta has done at Ohio State.

He also said the hire of football coach Urban Meyer gives the Buckeyes the best 1-2 combination in the entire country, both in performance and in doing things ?the right way.?

?I really believe very strongly that Ohio State has the best football and basketball staffs in the country,? Knight said.

?I'm so pleased at the job that Thad's doing. He's provided you with a basketball team. I love the way these kids play.?

Knight was on hand for Ohio State?s 8:30 tipoff against Lamar University, where his son Pat Knight is the head coach. His real reason for being in Columbus, however, was to be honored by the Ohio State University, where played under former head coach Fred Taylor.

?Had it not been for opportunity to play here, I'm not sure what I would've become,? Knight said after receiving a standing ovation from the crowd.

?I don't think it would've been a minster.?

- Knight said he was ?so pleased? with the direction of the current Ohio State program under Matta.

"I love the way these kids play, the energy they put forth," he said.
Knight said the hiring of new football coach Urban Meyer gives Ohio State ?the best combination of these two coaches of any university in the country insofar as doing things well and doing them the right way.?

- Knight's son, Pat, the Lamar coach, said the two days in Columbus "meant a lot" to his father.

"Now, I know he?s probably not going to tell you that, and give you that rough demeanor," he said. "But the last two days have been really good for him, to get back up here, because this is always a special place for him."

Pat Knight said former Ohio State coach Fred Taylor, for whom his father played, "was like a father figure" to Bob Knight.

"I remember coach Taylor, as a little kid, coming out to the house (in Bloomington, Ind.) after he retired in ?76 and staying with us," Pat Knight said.

"The cool thing I was spoiled with, we had a finished basement, so we kind of had like an apartment house, and coaches would stay down there and watch practice. I?d wake up and there would be Fred Taylor for breakfast, Al McGuire. Billy Packer when he was commentating. It was kind of neat as a kid having breakfast with all these great coaches."

Knight talks Kentucky, IU fans, NCAA players leaving early
By Josh Weinfuss, The Indianapolis Star correspondent
By Brian Spurlock, US Presswire

CARMEL, Ind. -- Bob Knight has never been one to mask his emotions.

Before the 71-year-old former Indiana University basketball coach walked off stage during a speech at The Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, he leaned on the podium and looked down for a moment.

"I will tell you this without reservation: In my experiences, everywhere I've been, I have never come across fans that were as good to the team, as good to the coaches, as involved in trying to root as hard as they could to help a team to win as we have in Indiana," Knight said, his voice starting to shake. "On the day that I die, I will be grateful to have been able to coach with fans like you."

Knight choked up, and the 1,600 in attendance showed their appreciation for The General with a standing ovation.

Knight, now an ESPN analyst, shared a few touching moments during his almost-90-minute speech. But they were few and far between. For most of the night, Knight took shots -- some friendly, some not -- at former players, fellow coaches, referees, Kentucky fans and the NCAA.

Knight opened with 20 minutes on Landon Turner, the former Hoosier who was paralyzed in a car accident in 1981. One senior day, Knight -- who credited Turner as the reason Indiana won the '81 NCAA title -- asked all former IU basketball players to stand.

"I turned around and said (to Turner, who was in a wheelchair), 'When in the hell are you going to stand up?' " Knight said. "And he said, 'Coach, I'm standing in my heart.'

"That may be the neatest moment I ever had in coaching."

Then Knight dug in.

Bob Knight will be inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame this fall, the first inductee to enter as a lifetime achievement recipient.

Knight was a member of the 1960 men?s basketball team, the only National Championship winning team in OSU men?s basketball history. He is the 12th member of a 2012 class that includes current Indiana Fever player Jessica Davenport.

"Our basketball program is thrilled with this recognition of Coach Knight," OSU coach Thad Matta said in a statement.

The lifetime achievement category was created as a way of recognizing former Buckeyes who excelled in their careers after their departure from OSU. His coaching career included leading the Indiana Hoosiers to three NCAA titles.

The class will be inducted at a dinner celebration on Sept. 14. They will be introduced at halftime of the Ohio State football home game against California on Sept. 15.

Jeff?s Weekly Sports Rapp: Incomparable Inductee
By Jeff Rapp

Ohio State will usher in another terrific group of Athletics Hall of Fame inductees this weekend. The names include decorated football stars Ray Griffin and Mike Vrabel, women?s basketball centerpiece Jessica Davenport, and accomplished women?s volleyball coach Jim Stone.

But the list gained a headliner deluxe this summer when the University and men?s Varsity ?O? president Bernie Brown announced that legendary basketball coach, and former Buckeye player, Bob Knight would also join the group, becoming the first member via the lifetime achievement category.

The category was created earlier this year to honor outstanding former Buckeyes who have excelled in their careers after leaving Ohio State. It is not an annual award. The basis for a lifetime achievement award is someone who has reached the highest, most exclusive level of success in his industry, sport or profession.

Ohio State Hall of Famer Bob Knight did not enjoy defeating Buckeyes ... at first: Bill Livingston

Bob Knight, shown during a ceremony for the 1960 Ohio State national champion men's basketball team, was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday in Columbus.

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Bob Knight, the second-biggest winner in men's college basketball coaching history, didn't enjoy his conquests of Ohio State, at least not at first.

Knight, the controversial coach for 29 stormy seasons at Indiana, learned how to win with the Buckeyes as a bench player for Fred Taylor, just as Knight himself would teach a pupil at Army, Mike Krzyzewski, who would one day surpass him.

Friday night here, Knight was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame for his lifetime contributions to basketball.

"This is as special as anything that's ever been done on my behalf," he said. "When I was coaching in the Big Ten, I didn't like losing. I didn't like losing here any more than anywhere else. However, I didn't like winning here either. It was a hard thing, the hardest thing I ever had to deal with. I always lost when I came here when Coach Taylor was coaching. Now, after that, [when Taylor retired,] I didn't mind winning here. That didn't bother me nearly as much."
