Orrville, Ohio: Home of Bobby Knight
ORRVILLE, Ohio ? The ranch house on North Vine Street, its backyard bordered by railroad tracks, offers the same view today as it did a half-century ago to a crew-cut kid who left the simple home and found fame. To the south stands a white water tower beaming this humble town?s name in red letters, and a few blocks north of the two-bedroom home lurks a monstrous utility plant, still belching steam into the sky.
A few years ago, however, the owner of the house peered out his front window and saw something odd.
Four men were in a car, and one was pointing up at the red brick house. They appeared to be strangers, but like fog burning away, one began looking familiar.
He was the man pointing at the house, the one doing all the talking, a big fellow with silver hair and a dimple.
Recognition came to Bill Hendricks.
?I thought to myself, that?s Bob Knight,? he recalled.
The famous coach was showing friends where he grew up, where his pride first mattered.
Knight always will be identified with Indiana, for it was during his 29 seasons with the Hoosiers that he experienced his greatest triumphs in a legendary college basketball coaching career that began at Army in 1965 and ended at Texas Tech in 2008.
Yet, the Basketball Hall of Famer always has been a Buckeye, and not just because he was a tenacious sophomore reserve on Ohio State?s 1960 national championship team led by Jerry Lucas and John Havlicek.
