Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan no longer certain he'll retire after season
August 13, 2015 12:37 am ET

So why the announcement in June?

"Well, I needed to get a statement out there knowing I wasn't able to tell recruits I could guarantee them four years," Ryan said. "And I wanted to be fair to our staff and Barry."

And now?

"I wouldn't be the first guy in the country that ever thought about retirement and then changed their mind," Ryan said. "I'm not doing anything revolutionary here."

Hey Bo when are you going to retire?

The story I heard on XM Radio (Ian Fitzsimmons?)

Coach Gard was to be Ryan's successor. Gard's father had cancer, so Ryan stuck around. Gard's father passed away recently, so Ryan is now stepping aside permanently, as Gard is now ready.

Ryan wanted his guy to have the head coach job, obviously. I can understand why you want your assistant to have a coaching job, but your job is to coach basketball, not to force the school into hiring someone in particular as their next head coach. Bo could have easily stayed on through the season and surely Gard would have remained on the staff this season and would have been in an even better position emotionally to be a head coach next year. But if Bo had finished this season, they may have never hired Gard as head coach if they were forced to make an evaluation with Gard having no HC experience. I can see the sentimental reasons for keeping Gard as head coach, but I don't think it's fair to the other candidates out there to just hand Gard the job - there are other qualified coaches and surely some that have more head coach experience (i.e., a better resume than Gard in that sense) that would be willing to take the job. I may be in the minority, but I think Bo is overstepping his bounds here in trying to control who Wisconsin hires as their next head coach. Gard deserves the interim head coach job, and that alone.

Also, you can update the thread title - Former Coach
