Bitching about the 2004 Season

I guess the honeymoon is over

Upon reflection of last Saturday's loss to the Badgers, I realize the NC glow from a mere 22 months ago has finally waned. Last season, I felt like we were contending up until the scUM loss. We were still squeeking by, but were still ending up on the right side of theose close games. The Buckeye magic was still alive and well last year (with the obvious exceptions of Wisconsin and scUM).

The first few games of this season, while ending up in the W column, were a bit more tenuous than our pre-conference games of '02 and '03. Barely beating Marshall isn't quite as satisfying as pasting, say the UW Huskies, or Texas Tech. And now that we're two games into our conference schedule, and find ourselves at or near the bottom of the Big 10, I think it's painfully obvious that we're no longer contenders, at least not this year.

While we were all (or at least should have been) prepared for a 'rebuilding' year, we always wanted to contend, and be in the top 10, etc. But here we find ourselves in a position we haven't seen in quite some time. We're a middle-of-the pack Big 10 team, and we're in the midst of some difficult growing pains. I'm starting to wonder whether we'll even be playing in a bowl game this year, let alone on New Years Day.

But, alas, we will bounce back. The season isn't a total loss and there's still plenty of football to be played. Besides, I think we know who will have more to lose on November 20, which should bode well for us. I trust in Tressel and think we'll be back to our winning ways soon enough. Here's hoping we're contending again next year.

I pretty much agree with everything Sloopy has had to say, except concerning the O-line. They suck. A good offensive line makes an average RB great. A good offensive line makes a poor RB average. A bad offensive line makes a great running back good. An exceptional RB will make his own plays, as proven by Sloopy's stat's above with regard to MoC. The fact is, we have a bad RB, and a bad O-line. The O-line consistently misses assignments, whether it's run-blocking or pass-blocking. I honestly think the talent is there, but I don't think the attitude or the scheme is. If we went back to telling our O-linemen to blow off the LOS and knock their assignment back, we would be more successful. This half-assed part zone part passive blocking scheme sucks, especially on the running plays. Poor RB's certainly don't help matters, but our RB's are getting hit behind the line of scrimmage more often than not. Obviously, there are other factors, such as play calling, but it all comes down to execution...and the O line is NOT executing.

I'm also not very enamored with Zwick right now. The kid came with all kinds of heralds, but I have yet to see any evidence of it at tOSU. Maybe he's the second coming, but he hasn't shown any indication of that so far. Poor decision making and inaccuracy will kill a QB every time....and he looks to be 3 days dead, IMO.

It's really only a position we haven't been in since 2001. We won the game that counts that year, but we were 7-5 and lost to South Carolina...AGAIN. Parity is a bitch...just ask Penn State. We've been able to make a resurgance, won a title, and won a BCS game last season. There aren't going to be any dynasties anymore. Even Oklahoma will come back to earth eventually, though with the freshman back they have, they may be the last to do so. We're still doing as well as basically anyone else, so if we go 6-5 this year and bounce back next year, all will be fine. If we go 6-5 3 or 4 years in a row...then we should talk trouble.
