I always thought of you as more of a Maurice Clarett guy.

Not even close. It's still Oden in a landslide.BigWoof31;1441161; said:Terrell Pryor - bigger than both??????
And Oden didn't?Wells carried us on his shoulders to at least 1 NC appearance.
Beanie was a great talent, but produced on a similar level to many other backs at OSU, not all of which were legends. Pittman's stats were about the same in 06, Clarett was similar in 02 (he just missed more snaps with injury). There will be others. There's a reason they say you should not draft a RB in the first round. In 2007, how many times did we go into "just hand it off to Beanie" mode?
Beanie was the #1 recruit in america. He had seasons with 7 & 8 tds. He was a very talented player, but he only produced consistently during one season.Beanie was just too productive not to get my vote.

If there's another Oden, it will be surprising and rare.Beanie was the #1 recruit in america. He had seasons with 7 & 8 tds. He was a very talented player, but he only produced consistently during one season.

Haven't read the whole thread, so I'm sure others have mentioned the following...
Wells was a great back. A great recruit and a great "get" No question about it. I mean, any time you get the top back in the nation you're doing something right... it just so happens, the Buckeyes get really really good RBs all the time. In fact, considering the number of RB Heisman's and the current coaching staff, it's hardly surprising that another great back like Jamaal Berry picks the Buckeyes... so, it's hardly a coup that Beanie came to Ohio State.
Now, then, quick... name me one 7 footer with Greg Oden level talent who has played at Ohio State. Just one.
Quick.... name me 1 consensus #1 recruit in basketball who LOI'd with Ohio State before Greg Oden.....
Ohio State has had some very good basketball players come through. Jim Jackson, Clark Kellogg, Jerry Lucas, John Havlicek... to name a few of the bigger ones...
Eh... I guess my point is... I can name that many RBs that have won Heisman's at Ohio State. Beanie was great, but getting great talent at RB is COMMON to Ohio State.... Oden was great, and getting great talent in basketball generally, and Center specificially, is RARE... The Greg Oden's of the world go to Kansas.. to North Carolina... to Duke... they don't go to Ohio State. Likewise, the Beanie Wells' of the world.. they don't go to Kansas, North Carolina, Duke..... they go to Ohio State.. to USC... to Texas or Nebraska (back in the day)

Admittedly, it was over 50 years ago, but you asked.![]()

So, did coaches 50 years ago eagerly wait around the mailbox stalking the postman like they hover over the fax machine today? :tongue2:BB73;1442137; said:I thought you'd try to get out of it by saying they didn't have LOI's 50 years ago. :tongue2:
I don't know when those started.
Nope. They just waited for the other party to get off of their phone line and once they get a dial tone they just called the coach. Back then, a player's word was his word.Dryden;1442391; said:So, did coaches 50 years ago eagerly wait around the mailbox stalking the postman like they hover over the fax machine today? :tongue2:
