In terms of pure talent/impact, it is Oden hands down. He is a Shaq/Bill Russell type of big man. Honestly, the second he tips a ball up for OSU, he will probably be the 2nd greatest Buckeye hoopster ever-next to Jerry Lucas-and could very well be #1 if he stays 2 years.
Wells is a phenomenal RB, and truth be told, if I had to choose between one or the other, I would take Wells, b/c I like Buckeye football better than hoops. That said, from a program shifting/historic perspective, it is not even close-we will eventually see another RB recruit as hyped as Wells, I doubt we will ever see a true center as good as Oden at OSU ever again.

Oden, by far.

The number #1 recruit in basketball has not been a part of the OSU basketball program, to get a player of his talent and maturity can not be measured in terms of putting the BB program back into the national picture. Do not think just because he is so highly regarded by NBA people that he will not be here for 2 years, if I had money to bet, I would say he will be here for 2 years. I have been following him for several years, this kid has goals.

Simple comparison -

How many times in its history has Ohio State brought onto campus the #1 RB (or #1 Football Player - period) in the nation? Several times, arguably three times during JT's years. MoC, Ted Ginn Jr (player), now Chris Wells.

Like 44820 asked - How many times has Ohio State brought the consensus #1 BBall prospect onto campus ... not many.

Oden is big for that reason, he is also big because of what this portends for the BBall program.

Perhaps about five or six years down the line we will be saying the same things about Matta that I said just above about Tressel. What a wonderful thought.

this isn't even a contest. Greg Oden was the national player of the year as a jr. The only other player ever to do that? Lebron James. Oden is special even for only one year. Wells is a good catch, Oden immediatly legitimizes a program, coach, and team
