Big Ten Power Rankings

We've learned a few things today.

1. Purdue, while solid, struggled against the Weasels. Weasels demonstrated to me that they have far too much talent to be having the kind of year they are having. Beilein = overrated by quantum.

2. Minnesota is hanging with Sparty a lot better than they have any right to. Tubby proves once again he does not take a back seat to any coach in the USA once he reaches the bench. (Recruiting is another matter entirely.) Players who looked like PJ Stumblefuck under Monsoon look competent at worst, quality at best under Tubby. Goophers are lucky to have him.

3. Iowa may not be as bad as I thought, or else Badgers are not as good. Wisky struggled to put away the Hawkeyes on their home court, not a good sign for Bo Ryan's squad.

I saw some of the Wiscy Iowa game. Neither team are very good right now. I think they are missing some players that they need to play the D. Especially Rein's team which usually has a stifling D, but not this year.

Minnesota looked very good against MSU. They are very big across the front line. I don't look forward to playing them. Neitzel probably never shut so bad. He has not been lighting it up like he did last year but as soon as he sees Scarlett & Gray he will probably go off.

Wisky probably had a letdown from their big win against Texas last week. Iowa is bad. Iowa versus sCum should be a hell of a game when they play:)

I actually think we match up pretty well against Minnesota. They have size, but it's not athletic size. Michigan State and Indiana not so much; their bigs are very athletic indeed. Sparty will kill us on the boards; Raymar Morgan is a beast and a half.

Bo Ryan has struggled against Thad Matta, and I expect that trend to continue this season. Too bad we only play them once this season.

with a couple games head to head we are starting to see somewhat of a pecking order being established....

1. Michigan State - I'm still not sure which one is better, MSU or Indiana. Knowing my luck they'll split (each winning at home) so we won't really know....

2. Indiana - they score more than MSU, but they also give up more. this is still the more talented team, but MSU might be a bit tougher physically.

3. Wisconsin - before yesterday I was going to say the gap had closed a bit in the intervening weeks but then they had major issues putting away a bad to horrible Iowa team. Still and all, they found a way to win when essentially the entire team couldn't hit sand if they fell off a camel in Egypt.

4. Ohio State - At one point this team looked absolutely leaderless AND disoriented. Now they are playing with some confidence and, while still prone to the mistakes of youth, are finding a way.

5. Purdon't - I was tempted to put Minny here, but I think Purdon't still gets the nod this week. They don't have the firepower to win the big Ten, but they should be in the tournament.

6. Minnesota - with the collapse of Illinois, Minnesota has moved into the 6th and probably last Big Ten tourney slot. If they have a strong season in the Big Ten, they'll be in.

7. PENN STATE - look who's here now?? Penn State finished off Illinois today and showed that they can indeed win at the game which uses the orange ball....

8. Illinois - nice knowing ya. Who would have thought 2 or 3 years ago that Illinois would be killed by bad guard play???

9. Iowa - improving from horrible to bad isn't a good thing

10. Michigan - Not improving. Square pegs that the coach is attempting to hammer into round holes. On talent alone they should be in the 7-8 range, but when they play within the wrong system they suck.

11. Northwestern - about a relevant as Dennis Kuchinich or Trevvie Alberts these days.....

Now that the Big ten has started I think we are getting a very good feel for the teams...

So lets make sure that we can try and get this done every Sunday...

Right now I think that we are looking at 4 categories...

Tourney teams:

MSU
IU
Wisky
tOSU

Maybe Tourney teams and need solid big ten seasons like 10-6 or 9-7
Purdue

Solid teams maybe NIT
PSU
Minny
ILL

Teams that are really bad
Mich
NW
Iowa

For someone new looking to get involved and contribute my 2 cents, when should I shoot my rankings over? Sunday or Monday?

I think if Minny has a 9-7 or 10-6 season in the Big Ten along with a win in the Big Ten tourney they'll get in the NCAAs for really no other reason than respect for Tubby.

Agree. I think Minny is a step ahead of PSU, Illinois, and possibly even Purdue but I will have a better feel of that after today.
