Big Ten Power Rankings

Wisky has a tough stretch of 7 games coming up...

@ Purdue
Indiana
@ Minnesota
Then a break against Iowa
Purdue
@ Indiana
Minnesota

I am thinking they will come out of that stretch with 2 or 3 loses...I think that stretch of games could really decide whether Indiana runs away with the league, Wisky takes control of the league or we are in for a 5 team battle, with IU, MSU, Wisky, Purdue, tOSU...

MSU has 5 cupcakes in a row, so they will probably stay with only 1 lose for the next couple weeks...

The weasels played the Badgers pretty tough last night and almost pulled off the W. Harris is a pretty good player for them and their 1-3-1 zone seemed to give Wisconsin problems. I think John B. might be putting his pieces into place even though they only have a couple good shooters. I might have to move scUm up in my power rankings next week. They are the type of team that can give Ohio State problems with that zone and their athleticism.

On a sidenote, the commentators seem to be more enthralled with their "ice fishing" adventure rather than the basketball game.

Wisconsin has been the beneficiary of a ridiculously easy schedule so far in the Big Ten. When you look at their schedule and see that they've beaten scUM, Northestern, Illinois and Iowa all at home in addition to scUM and Penn State on the road, you quickly realize that their 6-0 start to the Big Ten season isn't all that impressive. Especially when they're only beating teams like scUM by 3 at home. They won't do any better than 4-3 in their next 7 games.

But if you throw in their non conference where they beat Texas and should of beaten Marquette, you have to keep them up there until they lose...

They are a very solid well-balanced team. I think they would give almost any team a very good game and win the majority if it was at their house. Last night they looked pretty lazy but as I have mentioned I think meatChicken has some athletes.

You can't make overly much about a close game for Wisconsin against Michigan, unless most teams try to employ a 1-3-1 zone against the Badgers in the future. That defense has been the cryponite for the swing during Bo Ryan's tenure at Wisconsin, consistently leading to barnburners and losses against lowly Northwestern, for example. In spite of those performances, the Badgers have won two Big Ten Championships and always hovered near the top of the conference during that span. The swing tries to reverse the ball along the perimeter, but the perimeter defender in a 1-3-1 is camped at 25 feet or so, disrupting and closing passing lanes, forcing the team to begin about 30 feet away. You can't score from there. Bo Ryan has shown to be an ultra stubborn coach, and he's not going to deviate from the system for one game.

You also have to acknowledge that Corperryale Harris had the game of his life, probably trying to show Bo what he was missing as a former Badger recruit. Beilein is a good coach, Michigan is talented (albeit young), you have to realize they're capable of playing pretty good games.

You'd be remiss if you ignore that the Badgers beat the Longhorns AT Texas in non-conference and the 25 point drubbing of Penn State on the road was their largest margin of defeat all season. No, the Badgers aren't the 11th best team in the country, which was the product of numerous surrounding teams falling within a short time span. But they did show tremendous clutch shooting ability answering Michigan's late surge last night, which projects well to March success. And with the totality of their results they've shown to be a top 20 team or so. Ken Pomeroy's RPI has the Badgers ranked 20th, which heavily factors in schedule strength.

If we play a 1-3-1 zone will Bo let us be you because I don't wanna go up against that Benny Goodman system

You don't want to defend the Benny Goodman system or you don't want to endure it as a basketball fan? It can be arduous to watch, but it's not incredibly difficult to defend, especially if you employ the 1-3-1. If you're in a 1-3-1 zone, you can be yourself and have a great shot to win.
