I was kind of surprised about this one too. I think alot of football programs are reaching to become "the elite" like the programs of Ohio State, FloridaState, Michigan, Purdue, SoCal, and many others.

Parity is becoming a huge part of football also. Look at programs like Fresno State, Boise State, and some of the MAC programs. When you schedule teams like that, thinking its gonna be a cupcake, well you are in for a big surprise. In todays world if you want to become a true part of the BCS, then you have to do your homework. Michigan State has alot of homework to do. Maybe at the end of this season the Spartans could surprise alot of people. You just never know.

Do you have some major purdue ties kippy? (not that theres anything wrong with that) I've noticed you gave them props earlier about being happy to have the buckeyes at home and now you list them as an elite team? They are good, and may have a big year, but one big year does not a powerhouse make. Don't worry, you can tell us if you are from indy.. (or just remind me if i missed the post)

I have no ties to Purdue Buckeye soldier. I am originally from Y-town and have followed BIG10 F/B for over 47 years and remember how we had to beat Purdue the no. 1 team in 1968.
Now that Joe Tiller has brought them back to prominence since the days of Drew Brees and now Kyle Orton, i consider them an elite team. He is a fine coach and Ohio State knows this and Jim tressel has the utmost respect for him and his program. In 2002 Purdue went out to the sun bowl and took on a heavily favored Washinton Huskies team and came from behind to win. In my humble opinion i think they deserve to have some recognition as one of top football programs who represents the BIG10 quite well.

hmmm.. dont get me wrong, I'm not dissing on the best team in indiana.. but I don't think they qualify as elite.. #1 team in 68 huh... yea i wasnt born for another 14 years so maybe thats why i dont remember.. but when i think of the big ten and i think its this way for most of the country, its tOSU and scUM. then you get wisconsin, purdue, penn state, michigan state, minnesota, and iowa all being good teams with occasional streaks of either brilliance or northwestern like play.

Granted Miami scored 28 unanswered points to win by an outwardly impressive score of 42-17,
Let me clear some things up. When someone uses the phrase "to the wire" this is from the world of horse racing indicating that something was very close and ended up in a photo finish.

Losing by 28 points is in no means a photo finish and therefore is not an example of a game going to "the wire".

First off, I watched that game. Rutgers had a 17-14 lead going into the 4th Quarter, and it should have been worse than that.

Dorsey got intercepted at the goal line with under a minute left in the 2nd Quarter, and the RU player ran the INT back 100+ yards that would've given the Knights a 24-7 lead. Instead, the ref called some b.s. pass interference call that happened on the other side of the field (totally inconsequential to the play) to bring the TD back and give the Canes 1st and goal at the 2.

McGahee ran in the TD, to cut the lead to 17-14, and the inevitable 4th Quarter explosion happened. Miami was lucky to make it out with their lives that game, and RU was one of the worst teams in the country.

wolf: "That is the part you guys keep wanting to exlcude."

What're you talking about? If Rutgers gets the call, there (maybe) is no 4th Quarter comeback. RU had two long drives in the 3rd Quarter of the game that would've iced it if they had just kicked a FG or two. Instead, they went for the TD and the fake on 4th that caused them to come away with nothing. If the score is 24-7, I guarantee RU kicks the FG.

Lets put it this way. Everything is relative. If you're Miami (# 1 in the Nation at the time), and you're facing Rutgers (# 1,000 at the time), and RU has anykind of a lead in the 4th Quarter, then its classified as "down to the wire."

Miami's last three TDs meant nothing in that game because Rutgers heart and spirit had been broken already. They missed three golden opportiunities to pull off the biggest upset in sports since Tyson-Douglas.

That's where you and me differ. I'll give you your first point about it being close for 3 quarters, nothing more.

HGB: "I'll pile on. And it was close thru regulation and the first overtime"

And it wouldn't have even been that close if the damn refs had called a holding call on the Canes every now and again.

And back to the Wolf, if Rutgers holds anything but a 3-0 first quarter, first drive lead on you, then its a down to the wire game.
