Big Ten Basketball Thread

Izzo is a great coach, but even he can't turn a sow's ear into a silk purse & that's what he'd have to do to get this Spartan club to make it to Houston. Not every MSU team Izzo coaches makes the Final Four, "just" 6 in his 15 seasons as coach there.

Izzo's teams lost either 12 or 13 games in each of five seasons in a span of six from 2002 through 2007, the one that they didn't lose 12 or 13 was their only F4 in that timeframe - if people back then were saying they'd make the F4 anyway even though they were losing a lot of games, they would've been wrong over and over again. Raymar Morgan was better than people give him credit for - right now MSU is really struggling to replace both his talent & toughness - he wasn't always consistent, but he still managed to start for four years and be among a select group of 5 players in MSU history to score 1,500+ points and have 700+ rebounds.

Even so, MSU's F4 run last year was mostly because they got dealt a good hand - they were one of only two teams since 1992 to be seeded #3 or below to make the Final Four without facing the #1 or #2 seed in their region - the only other team? Georgia Tech in 2004, who went out in the second round the year following an appearance in the NC game, and all they lost off their finalist team was Marvin Lewis (kind of similar to Chris Allen), Robert Brooks and Clarence Moore (Brooks and Moore combined to average less in pretty much all statistical categories than Raymar Morgan did last year), plus they added Anthony Morrow. I'd say MSU this year is similar to GT in '05.
you play the cards dealt to you in the tournament. nothing more, nothing less. granted a lot of it is match ups, but you play your game and coaching plays a large rule in the impact of the tournament. izzo can coach. can he whip this team into shape? hard to say, maybe this team as you imply is only chicken shit, but ive seen izzo turn chicken shit into chicken salad by mid march, so who knows...

Izzo is a great coach. I don't think anyone doubts that. This team seems to lack cohesiveness (word?). They have talent but it's just figuring out the right pieces. Sparty seems to find a way of turning it on for the tourney. I would put them at a 5% chance of making the F4 but wouldn't be surprised by a deep run in the brackets. With Purdue and MSU both trying to find their identity, OSU seems to be the favorite.

That's why they call Izzo Mr. March around here in Detroit. They lose road/neutral games like this every year early on and the fringe fans start calling in to the radio stations

You gotta look at it subjectively this early in the season. MSU is obviously (IMO) in the upper echelon of final 4 contenders this year at this point.

IF the upper echelon of FF candidates includes about 20 teams, then I agree. Izzo's problem this year is he doesn't have one big that he can count on. Roe can't score and is too small to defend the post. Nix can defend the post with his size, but is slow and limited offensively as well. Sherman has some decent post skills but is weak and horrible defensively. Payne is in over his head as a frosh.

Their guards are good and Green is a very good, albeit undersized PF, but right now, this team has to shoot well from the perimeter to win games. When they don't shoot well, they will lose and that is whats different (so far) from past Izzo teams. Will they fix ii, maybe. Izzo said before the season that anything less than a national championship would be a disappointment. After their last game he said this team has issues unlike any he has had to overcome before. They don't have an interior presence, offensively, defensively or rebounding.

I didn't get to watch the game, and I know Oakland shot a reasonably high percentage from the field. But it took a season low in TOs for MSU and 55% free throw shooting from Oakland for Michigan State to win by one.

New drinking game sweeping the nation...take a chug everytime dooky v contradicts himself. Example from seconds ago...early in the game he said how UK was going to have trouble winning a Nat'l Title relying on 1 and dones, follows that up by saying that UK could be unbeatable with next year's recruiting class coming in even if they have to replace multiple starters. Um, okay. :so:

Izzo gets a one game suspension from the NCAA for a secondary violation regarding a middle school camp.

Link

That fucking walking bag of sleaze Pearl only gets 8 games for lying to the NCAA about actual recruiting violations and then they come down with this.

Unreal.

Pearl got 8 games from the SEC (that's why he's coached all the games so far this season - none of them were SEC conference games). The NCAA has yet to rule on the Tennessee case.
