Max, my beef is he's putting OSU behind MSU and Purdue while most respected analysts are (if they are putting OSU behind them) moreso putting OSU beside them than behind them by giving the Bucks a similar national ranking. Brennan is saying MSU and Purdue can win a national title, while OSU cannot - that is completely unfair and a huge oversight for a supposedly objective blogger.
Best case = national title for OSU. Can't slice it any other way. You can objectively rate MSU and PU slightly ahead of OSU in the conference standings (I wouldn't), but when it comes to national standing, it's a virtual dead heat, and Brennan really shouldn't be calling MSU and PU the top tier, either, as OSU is absolutely worthy of being mentioned in the same sentence as those to as the best teams in the league. They proved last year they deserved to be considered on par with PU and MSU when everyone had felt OSU was a tier below them in the preseason. Again, fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me - that's another big part of why I have a beef with Brennan, he's making the same mistake twice when he could very easily not make the mistake. If he had said OSU's best case was winning a national title and that they were roughly on par with PU and MSU, I would not complain if he was rating MSU and PU ahead of OSU. Saying OSU is a second-tier team in the Big Ten & can't win a national title while PU and MSU can is what I take issue with - he didn't say that in as many words, but that's the implication of his best/worst case scenarios.
Here are the preseason rankings of Big Ten teams from the Sporting News:
1. MSU
3. Purdue
5. OSU
15. Illinois
18. Wisconsin
So a respected national publication has the Bucks basically right with those other two, with a ranking that teams that contend for national titles get. Again, this blogger (whose job if you read his work on the ESPN blog is reporting the news - he's not really a basketball analyst) shouldn't be putting OSU far behind MSU and Purdue, but that's exactly what he's done by saying PU and MSU can win a national title while OSU cannot.
