Big Ten Basketball Thread

Xavier is still a quality club - I don't think that's a bad loss for Iowa at all, losing to the Muskies on a neutral court. You have to have reasonable expectations for Iowa and view that loss within the framework of "this is an Iowa team that won't finish .500 this year and isn't expected to get many good nonconference wins." Xavier got Jamel McLean back and he's a big part of their team this year - not having McLean made Xavier an average team (and was a big part of why they lost an exhibition game), but XU at full strength this year is still a good team - not a top-25 team but possibly top-50. Iowa just has to avoid losing to the cupcakes and manage to knock off an average "name" team (like Wake Forest and Iowa State) occasionally to have a decent year.

I don't know how good UNC is this year - they were overrated at #8, and I had them pegged in the #15-#20 range but they probably aren't even that good if Barnes is going to struggle like that. What a shockingly bad performance by HB. But even if UNC is not a top-25 team, it's still a big win for Minnesota in the sense that a) it's an "upset" win over a top-10 team that could give the Gophs some momentum, b) it's a win over a prestigious UNC program that helps build fan enthusiasm, and c) it puts the Minnesota program in the national spotlight for once.

First win over a BCS team for McCaffery at Iowa - they knocked off Alabama today. ACC fans should be very worried about Wake Forest playing anybody with a pulse, and believe it or not, Iowa has a pulse, as they showed today. Good win for a team that's supposedly a Big Ten bottom-feeder.

I don't think Gatens is 100% right now and will probably get better over the next week or so...huge win for the B10

Congrats to the Gophers, who are making the Big Ten look good. I want everyone to do that this week. Except Michigan. Fuck Michigan. And their fucking basketball team. I hope they lose to South Carolina Upstate, New York Downstate, North Dakota A&M and finish last in the Idaho Tech Invitational, played on a blue court. Fuckers.

Another team in the conference thats playing better than I thought they would is Penn State. We all know Battle is good but the other guys have stepped up. I don't think their good enough to win the conference but they may trip up a couple contenders that are sleepwalking at their place. I see them making the NIT.

I'd say that's a pretty safe bet.
They may determine who does though and thats kinda my point. I think they will struggle against OSU, Minny, and MSU but IMO they can beat Illinois and Purdue on the right night at home. If they can get one of those two for us it will help the Buckeye cause.

Unfortunately for Ed DeChellis, that pretty much is the pattern for Penn State basketball since he's gotten there - in their good seasons. Can't beat top league teams anywhere; can sometimes beat mid-tier teams at home; finish anywhere from 7th to last.

Next year will probably be better for Penn State. Nebraska is coming to the Big Ten - and they usually suck.
