The "America 12 Conference" is the favorite to become the new name of the current Big East Conference's football schools, league sources told ESPN.

The Big East football universities are not expected to add a 12th school until 2015, when Navy joins. It will have 10 members in 2013, and East Carolina and Tulane will replace departing Louisville and Rutgers the following year.

Sources said Tulsa is the only school the league is considering to become its 12th member. It hasn't been determined yet whether the Golden Hurricane would be invited to join in 2014 or 2015, sources said.

They should use the name Conference US... oh, wait...

If they have any responsibility at all, they'll use it to pay down some of that debt they've racked up. Unfortunately, they'll probably end up [censored]ing it all away on facilities in some lame attempt to get noticed by another conference.

Or they can have one great big Juggalo party

Want to name the Big East? You might get a chance

The (old) Big East, which is losing its name to the Catholic 7 basketball schools, is considering opening up to social media for conference name suggestions, according to a league source.

The league would likely do this via Twitter. Start brainstorming.

The league is currently considering a list of names provided by its branding firm. ESPN reported the league's lawyers bought the domain for "America 12."

In alphabetical order, I've got some ideas for naming what's left of the 'Old' Big East:

All New Unified Solidarity (ANUS)

Apparently Stuck Somehow (ASS)

Better After Realignment Forever (BARF)

Conference Rejects Are Partnered (CRAP)

Former Entitled Club All Left (FECAL)

Forever Unified Competitors Conference (FUCC)

Group After Rejected By All Greater Entities (GARBAGE)

Give Us Time To Emerge Realigned (GUTTER)

Just Useless Nobodies Conference (JUNC)

Left Out Since Everybody Realigned Somewhere (LOSERS)

Please Invite Somewhere Soon (PISS)

Proudly Unified Kingdom East (PUKE)

Realignment Easily Can Take Unified Members (RECTUM)

Somehow Cincinnati Unlucky Member (SCUM)

Still Here Integrated Together (SHIT)

Significant Members Exited Grabbing Money Already (SMEGMA)

Told Reality After Short Hiatus (TRASH)

Together Until Realignment Dissipates (TURD)

Volatility Only Makes Integration Tougher (VOMIT)

We Are Still Together East (WASTE)

Johns Hopkins to consider conference affiliation for men's lacrosse

Johns Hopkins University will formally explore conference affiliation for its men's lacrosse program, President Ronald J. Daniels announced in an email to members of the university community this morning.

Though JHU has competed as an independent with no conference or league affiliation for the entire 130-year history of its men's lacrosse program, the changing landscape of the sport has prompted the university to consider its options, Daniels said.

.../snip/...

Daniels said that Johns Hopkins had not received any formal invitations to join a conference, but have been approached by more than one seeking to gauge JHU's interest in becoming an associate member. He announced that he was forming a special committee to look into conference affiliation options. The committee will work closely with JHU Athletic Director Tom Calder and men's lacrosse coach Dave Pietramala, and will submit its findings and recommendations to Daniels by May 15.

The full email:
Dear Members of the Johns Hopkins University Community:

This university is known for stellar academic achievement. We are known for groundbreaking scholarship, for compassionate patient care and for sharing our knowledge with the world.

We are also known for our storied lacrosse program.

Our history in the sport is a proud one, dating back on the men's side to 1883, just a few years after the founding of the university itself. We have won 44 national titles, nine of them since lacrosse became an NCAA sport, and we have produced numerous All-Americans, players and coaches of the year, and hall of famers.

In its 130-year history, our men's lacrosse program has never joined a formal league or conference, though we have built up a number of traditional - indeed, historic - rivalries.

The realities of intercollegiate competition, however, compel us at this time to examine whether we should consider affiliating with a conference. Some traditional foes have recently announced changes in their own affiliations, changes that might limit their flexibility to continue scheduling games with us. At the same time, growth of the sport at the Division I level has resulted in the formation of more leagues with automatic qualification for the NCAA tournament, potentially limiting post-season opportunities for at-large qualifiers.

Though we have received no formal invitations, we have been asked by more than one conference if we might be interested in becoming an associate member for men's lacrosse.

We have made no commitments. We have made no decisions. We have concluded only that it is time to consider this question in the Johns Hopkins way: with care, deliberation and transparency.

For that reason, I have appointed the following special committee to gather available information, assess the issue and advise me as to whether we should seek conference affiliation for our men's lacrosse team:

Jerry Schnydman A&S '67, co-chair
Former Executive Assistant to the President and
Secretary to the Board of Trustees

Chris Watson A&S '05, co-chair
Trader, SAC Capital Advisors
Executive Committee, Blue Jays Unlimited Board of Advisors

Chuck Clarvit A&S '78
CEO, Vinci Partners
Member of the Board of Trustees

David Cordish A&S '60, '69 (MLA)
Chairman and CEO, Cordish Enterprises LP

Tristan Davies A&S '87 (MA)
Faculty Athletics Representative
Senior Lecturer, Writing Seminars
The Johns Hopkins University

Mary Ann McGuire Dickson A&S '97
Director, Global Banking and Markets,
Client Prioritization for the Americas,
Bank of America Merrill Lynch
Former President, Blue Jays Unlimited

Alan Fish
Vice President, Real Estate and Campus Services
The Johns Hopkins University

Among the committee's tasks will be to seek the views of members of the university community, both on campus and among our alumni and friends. The committee will soon announce a means for you to share your thoughts with it.

I want to thank everyone on the committee for agreeing to serve in this important matter for our university. I look forward to receiving the committee's report by May 15. Both this report and my decision will be posted online soon thereafter.

Sincerely,
Ronald J. Daniels

If the Big Ten really does take on Johns Hopkins and the other ACC schools (to join Maryland and Rutgers), BTN will really have to add more infrastructure to its network for the greater number of sports they'll broadcast.

You can't rely on StudentU forever (even though it's good experience for students).

You'll be broadcasting mid-week lacrosse games, more baseball, etc.

I don't think the Big Ten will allow Hopkins to keep its ESPNU deal, so BTN exposure (or FOX Sports 1, if a deal is signed) is important for Hopkins.

Butler, Dayton, Xavier to join Big East next season

The Big East cleared its last hurdle Tuesday with the announcement it had reached an agreement with Notre Dame that allows the Irish to leave July 1 for the ACC. So where does the Big East and the yet-to-be named conference that will be anchored by Cincinnati and Connecticut go?

Dayton will join Butler and Xavier next season in the new Big East, which is said to be looking at corporate offices in the metropolitan area. Creighton and St. Louis come on board for 2014-15.

Meanwhile, the unnamed conference of football-playing schools already is looking to expand, with Tulsa a likely candidate. The league, which has not settled on the America 12 name, will keep its league office in Providence, and is poised to implement some of the most innovative and interaction telecasts in college football history.

Interesting. That's the first time I've heard anyone claim UD would be #10. Most of the previous stories have listed Creighton joining this year and then UD & St Louis battling with a few other schools for the 11th & 12th spots.

To me UD makes a little more sense than Creighton. They are a closer fit geographically and draw a lot of students from the northeast - more than Creighton does, I imagine. Creighton really should be in too at some point though.

I assume that you mean UC and Xavier. If so, UC isn't going to be in the Big East next year. They'll be in the clusterfuck conference. So the cross town shootout will still be a non-conference matchup.
