Anyone know if the two parties (Maryland and ACC) do not settle out of court, will Maryland have an opportunity to either depose or call John Swafford (ACC commish) as a witness?

These cases have never reached trial, so that's why I was wondering. Swafford's answers to Maryland might be interesting.

I think Jim Delany is out of the process, but I wonder how much influence he has in North Carolina, since he used to work for the NC justice department. Probably less influence than Swafford.

Because there is a lawsuit Md does have the ability to depose the ACC Commish. It doesn't matter if they settle (Well, I suppose it does to the extent that if they settle, then there is no suit and no deposition afforded). It doesn't matter if it goes to trial. They could depose him today.

In exchange for giving up the Big East name the remaining football schools (that's UConn, USF & Cincy folks) will keep the exit fees & tournament credits of the FB schools leaving (Rutgers, WVU, Louisville, Syracuse, Pitt) as well as the entry fees for the new members. That could be worth upwards of $80M.

AP: Big East football schools will get approx. $100 mil in naming deal

It was announced a week ago that the seven basketball programs breaking off from the Big East conference, informally known as the Catholic 7 on the interim, would actually be keeping the Big East name.

The price of that brand, plus the rights to keep the basketball tournament at Madison Square Garden, will result in approximately $100 million for Big East football schools. Most of that money will go to Cincinnati, South Florida and UConn, according to a report from Ralph Russo of the Associated Press. The basketball schools will receive about $10 million of the $110 million pot.

.../cont/...
So UC is going to end up pocketing $30 Million. That's a lot of money to get paid to...Just! Go! Away!

Take heart Wake Forest!

If they have any responsibility at all, they'll use it to pay down some of that debt they've racked up. Unfortunately, they'll probably end up pissing it all away on facilities in some lame attempt to get noticed by another conference.

At least every Big Ten AD is on the same page now and saying the conference isn't looking to expand.

Maybe the tune will change after the Maryland lawsuit is over.

Sparty AD Mark Hollis chimes in.

http://www.detroitnews.com/article/...-t-see-Big-Ten-expanding-again-in-near-future

"We're not in a position right now where we're looking to expand," Hollis said. "There are not teams that are being talked to or discussed. It is off the radar right now from Big Ten athletic directors and the conference office. We're trying to figure out, more importantly, the integration of Rutgers and Maryland. Our focus and attention right now is in that direction."

The "America 12 Conference" is the favorite to become the new name of the current Big East Conference's football schools, league sources told ESPN.
.
.
.
The Big East football universities are not expected to add a 12th school until 2015, when Navy joins. It will have 10 members in 2013, and East Carolina and Tulane will replace departing Louisville and Rutgers the following year.

Sources said Tulsa is the only school the league is considering to become its 12th member. It hasn't been determined yet whether the Golden Hurricane would be invited to join in 2014 or 2015, sources said.
