The whole Big Ten and State Penn thing was JoPa's idea. Many in the State Penn camp would love to go back to being in the east either as an independent or maybe in the Big East. If JoPa should suddenly go what would happen? We could see a dramatic shift in PSU thinking. I'm not convinced that State Penn in the Big Ten is a permanent thing.

Big East considered adding Penn State, Notre Dame - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

PSU's choices are to stay in the Big Ten or become an independent again... the Big East choice sailed away when they decided to become a basketball-first conference after Miami, Virginia Tech and Boston College left. With 16 teams they would be hard-pressed to add another one, especially a basketball-weak school like PSU. I could see the Big East wanting to add PSU football only but that would be suicide for all the other sports as the Big Ten would kick the rest of PSU's sports to the curb faster than an SEC 40-time... all or nothing for the Big Ten, just ask Notre Dame. With those being the realistic choices, PSU will most likely stay in the Big Ten, even after JoePa dies in the middle of Beaver Stadium.

PSU isn't going anywhere. It would be a disaster for them. You don't leave the big ten for the big east...you just don't.
Agree 110%, especially for a football-first school.

depends on scheduling method.
in the SEC, each team has 1 "locked" opponent from the opposite division:
LSU - Florida
Auburn - UGA
Bama - Tennessee
Ole [censored] - Vandy
Moo U - Kentucky
Arky - So Carolina

then play 2 games against the other division on a hom and home rotating basis.

not a perfect set-up, but I prefer it to the Big XII (OU/Nebraska ain't an every year event any more).
We keep our traditional rivalries (Auburn/UGA, Bama/Tenn) alive every year, plus every year, someone "new" shows up on the schedule (last year we dropped Kentucky, added UGA ; this coming season we drop So Carolina and add Vandy).

Which results in Ohio State playing TSUN and the toughest team in their division, which means probably that Ohio State plays #2 and #3, while they each just play Ohio State unless they get into a proposed B10 championship game.

I call bullsheet, we win out the NC chances will take care of itself just like always.

The thing is with me. How much longer will it "take care of itself". This conference right now is the BIG ONE, and sometimes PSU/UM will step up as well. The fact is we don't have many friends regaurding our conference. Yes, I know, fuck em we're OSU. For me I'd just like that extra game at the end of the year so that OSU can determine it's own fate even FURTHER.

Sure if we win out then we control our on destiny, but again how often is that really going to happen? If we're 11-1 and in 3rd place (2nd in some polls) we would kill for another game wouldn't we? However, we'd be stuck in 3rd with no way to advance because our season ended 4 weeks before the title games. Again if we play that championship game and we play well something like 35-10, and say USC (#2) is idle then my bet is we jump them. Sure if we lose then we're probably a At Large instead, but thats the risk i'm willing to take.

This is Buckeye Planet

Not Hoosierville, not Boilertown, not even Nittany City.

... Buckeye Planet

Even entertaining the idea that there would ever be a game after The Game should be a banable offense; but it should be a never-used ban because it should be unthinkable.

There is The Game. Then there is a bowl game. So let it be written, so let it be done.

You keep saying this as if anyone is going to give a shit if tOSU beats another Big10 team. If the national perception is that the Big Ten sucks, beating another big ten team isn't going to jump us over USC, all things being equal.

I've heard the thought of adding 5 teams... Imagine what kind of Super Conference that "could" be if these teams were added. Then make a push to add at least one more game to college schedules. So you play your 7 division games, 3 or 4 from the other division and 2 or 3 non-conference games.

Big 16 Super Conference

Big 16 East

Ohio State
Michigan
Michigan State
Notre Dame
Penn State
Pittsburgh
Purdue
Indiana

Big 16 West

Texas
Oklahoma
Missouri
Minnesota
Iowa
Wisconsin
Illinois
Northwestern

An OSU Schedule:

Youngstown State
Texas
Navy
Pittsburgh
Notre Dame
Purdue
Michigan State
Wisconsin
Indiana
Oklahoma
Penn State
Illinois
scUM

Intense...

All hypothetical of course.

The west is a lot weaker... what happened to Oklahoma?

I like Oklahoma as part of it... I guess they can still play a non-conference game with Oklahoma State. But the BIG 12 would be done without Texas and Oklahoma. Sure.. replace Nebraska with Oklahoma

actually, the more I think about it, OSU and Michigan would have to be in same division.

no one would be interested in an OSU/Michigan Big Ten title game only 7 days after the OSU/Michigan regular season game.

Any discussion of Big Ten expansion that addresses the "importance of the Big Game between tOSU and TSUN," the desirability of matchups, travel, geography, etc. misses the point. As do discussions that say that it's a good idea so long as we don't have a playoff.

This idea, boys and girls, is about the following:

12 teams => NCAA allows a playoff

Playoff => $$$$$$$$$$$$$

All other discussion is irrelevant.

Call me old fasioned...but the idea of a Big 10 championship game makes me want to hurl.

think of this scenario....(assume PSU and OSU are in the same division). Last year...PSU goes to the Big 10 Championship game against MSU. MSU wins. Does this help or hurt our chances at a BCS game. MSU is automatically in...PSU probably gets an at large selction. OSU is left out in the cold.

ok..now i'm rambling

You're assuming that there would be two divisions and those divisional winners would get automatic berths in the CCG. That would probably be true (e.g. Tennessee over Florida and Georgia in 2007), but it's worth pointing out that it isn't necessarily true.
