I think much of the ACC doesn't want to live in an SEC run world any more than the B1G or PAC schools do. The overwhelming majority of schools in that conference fit a B1G or PAC profile far more than they fit in with the SEC. Clemson and FSU are clearly SEC deep down in their bones, but even if they vote with the SEC, the alliance still has more than enough votes to override the SEC on anything from NIL rules to playoff expansion. I also think a lot of the old school ACC schools realize that espn can't be trusted and would gut their conference in the service of a greater Reich SEC just as easily as they helped gut the B12. ESPN can't reduce their television payout just because the schools vote on governance issues in a way that they don't like. Dabo is a clown. Do you think the Presidents at UNC, UVA, Pitt or Boston College give one fuck what Dabo Sweeney wants?

This is not a bad move at all. Gives us a solid majority to overrule the SEC on any decision of importance without having to gut the PAC and form PRESTIGE WORLDWIDE.

Believe it or not, I actually found this on mgoblow. It's a good analysis of why this is a good move.

I don't think thats what this is about. Think this through. What does the SEC want more than anything? Hint hint. Playoff expansion. They add Oklahoma and Texas and all of the sudden in a 12 team format they thinking they should be in with 4-6 teams annually.

Well, what just happened was that the B1G, Pac 12 and ACC just gave themselves de facto power over how the CFP is formed. Now they can easily say "no" to CFP expansion. But not only that, they can basically become the bully in the room and say, "not only are we not expanding the playoffs, with the Big 12 gone, theres 4 conferences. Each conference gets one representative." Now all of the sudden the SEC is loaded with great teams that can't beat Bama and can't get into the playoff at all. Sankey's head explodes. Further more, the B1G, Pac 12 and ACC would essentially have governing authority with the NCAA to set and enforce recruiting practices

exactly what @BB73 and I (and others) have been saying since the day the news broke

@Jaxbuck especially has been making the point that the SEC’s move formed this natural coalition, all the powers that be need to do is to let it happen

Better yet, the B1G-PAC-ACC-FOX alliance sets up their own playoff and tells ESECPN that they're not invited.

And ultimately, it is a national conference/alliance while the SEC remains (even if they grab Clemson and FSU) a regional Southern conference. And the overwhelming majority of those schools (Texas and Vandy do....maybe Florida?) do not have large alumni presences outside the conference footprint, unlike B1G, PAC and ACC alumni bases which are large in every major metropolitan market in the country. There's a reason that Ohio State maintains fully staffed, full-time development offices in NYC, DC, Fort Meyers FL, Chicago, LA, SF and Seattle.

You learn sumthin' every day. Did not know that. Thought it was just a case of alums forming groups in those places.

There are tons of official alumni clubs around the country run through the main alumni club, but these are different and are officially arms of The Ohio State University Foundation. I think they have offices in Cleveland and Cincinnati too. Something--just a hunch--tells me that Bama, LSU or Clemson don't have full-time, staffed fundraising offices in Chicago or New York.

I think all this means is these 3 conferences are going to have a pre-meeting and come to a consensus on all playoff decisions and the sec will be stuck with whatever is decided.

None of them want to see the sec with half of the playoff spots.

Just a wet dream, but I’m hoping they keep it at a 4 team with only conference champions. We would see the sec cancel Texas and okie so quick.

I've seen a lot of speculation that it's also about keeping the status quo until 2026(?) when the ESPN contract is up, so they can take the playoff to the open market.

Yeah, I think The Alliance is not only a shot across the bow to the SEC! but also one towards espn....and Notre Dame. You might ask yourself, "but isn't the ACC all-in with the mouse and the dome?" Yes, but I think the more serious ACC schools realize they got a bitch's deal out of both relationships. They're on the espn plantation without the contract and money that the SEC! gets and the realization that espn will peel off Clemson and FSU the moment it makes sense for them and the SEC! Notre Dame crawled into bed with the SEC! to negotiate the playoff expansion in a way that absolutely negates them ever having to join a conference, which is why it seemed initially that there would be this rush to start the expansion early by extending the rights to The Mouse. Notre Dame gets what it wants. ESPN gets what it wants. And the Truck Stop Conference gets an expanded playoff that they think will land them 5 or 6 spots every year.

As much as I eventually want a motherfucking expanded playoff, it's absolutely the strategic motherfucking Game Of Thrones move right now to put some hard motherfucking brakes on the motherfucker right now.

Not so fast, my friend.
