The more I think of it, the more excited I'd be to see an SEC team play in the Big Ten in late December. I'm skeptical about it ever happening. Also, I'm not predicting a win for the Big Ten team. I just want to see the SEC team (or other southern team) do it. I'm predicting one of two things happening, though: first, they'll "strongly encourage" the Big Ten team to "host" the game in Indianapolis (or another indoor facility) or the seedings will be fixed (from my perspective) so that the southern teams won't have to play in the north.
Congratulations on getting to the playoffs, Cincinnati. You get to play your first round at Notre Dame.
And Clemson, too bad you lost those 2 games. You have to be on the road for the first round. Go play at LSU.

I have heard that the NFL has some rule that they can't broadcast games on Saturday until a specific date. Some anti-trust rule or something. I may be remembering it wrong, but it isn't "when college football is over". It's "not until this date".

Fair enough - I had no idea

This year, specifically, if we want to avoid playing on Christmas, maybe play 1 game Wednesday night, 1 game Thursday night, and 2 games on Monday? That'll take some politicking.

Or start the season earlier. Sure it's hot, but I'm not aware of a magic rule that says we have to start on Labor Day weekend.

Anything that involves an auto bid for a conference winner is going to kill OOC matchups (one would think). What would be the point?

Next victim would be rivalry games. OSU locks up it's spot for the CCG 2 weeks before hand and the QB is a little nicked up. When do we eventually start to see starters be rested for games that, while a rivalry, are meaningless for a playoff spot?

Just a couple of things I can think of when they start to expand playoffs and erode the CFB regular season.

Shit they already had the expanded B1G set up that way at first…only by the grace of Woody did we not face sitting starters in the “first” Michigan game.

I am guessing in 10-20 years rivalry week will be just another week where starters sit and guys bail early for NFL prep like they do the bowls now

I know it's Apples and Oranges comparison, but I'm OOC games are played to boost at large bids.
"LSU loses to Alabama and finishes second in the west but beat Texas in an OOC game" scenarios.

Hard to see boosters and donors getting on board with stuff like this. You could be totally right but I can't see teams taking L's to conference rivals because their post season is all but assured.

On the flip side, I think OOC rivalry games are probably on the way out.

Spurrier sat guys against FSU to get ready for the inagural SEC CG if memory serves. It's just a matter of time imo.

As far as the OOC stuff goes; devil is in the details. Big time OOC matchups might be a good at large booster but going 3-0 against air might be better. It will come down to exact structure and how the selection process rewards/punishes.

I've been against having automatic qualifiers for conference champions because of Florida State. 2002 or 2005, pick your year. I had to look up the history of those teams to remind myself of the scenarios, but I remember both of these very well

Florida State won the ACC both years. In '02, a bad 8-4 FSU team ended the regular season #16 in the country after beating rival #15 Florida (this was before the ACC had a championship game). That '02 FSU team should have NO right to play in a CFP in place of a deserving team... especially if we are talking about an 8-teams or less CFP scenario

'05 was even worse. A unranked 7-4 FSU team upset #5 Va Tech in the ACC Championship Game to win the ACC, and ended the regular season #22 (the only reason they were ranked at all was based on that last game). There's no WAY that team should even be playing in a 12 or 16 team CFP scenario... especially since the ACC still likely would have had a representative in that Va Tech team

No matter how many teams they put in the CFP tourny, they shouldn't have automatic qualifiers. Let the best however many teams play and let it all play out. That way, the regular season actually means a little something and teams can't rest on their laurels

Yay! I'm not alone. But you and I are going to lose in this fight. The 5 conferences WILL get auto-bids, which sucks. Northwestern in 2018 was 8-4 going into the conference championship game. They lost to Duke, Akron, M*ch*gan, and I think they lost to the 3rd grade Chicago Public Schools runner-up team. If they somehow miraculously (or disastrously, for us Buckeye fans) win the conference championship game, I think they have no right to be in the playoffs. I don't care if they'll probably lose to Alabama - there's a small chance they win. Then they probably will lose to Clemson, but there's still a small chance they win. Then they probably will lose to whoever is next, but there's still a chance. I agree that it's fun to watch the Cinderella team win some games, but I don't want them to win the championships. If they want to be considered for the playoffs, don't lose to Duke or Akron.

If/when they expand to 8 teams, here's how I'd like to see it done: cut out everyone ranked lower than 12. Sorry #13, don't have 3 losses and you might have made it. Then, the top 4 teams are in. Then, of 5-12, the next 4 conference champions. If there's only 3 conference champions in there, then the highest ranked non-champion gets an at-large. If there were only 2 champions, then you get 2 at-large, and so on. I don't like that there are 5 conferences that are better than the other conferences and it's written so in the rules. I know the 5 conferences are better and that's fine, but I don't think it needs to be in the rules. Also, eff this committee garbage. There should be a way to rank the teams that's transparent. There should be a way that people can look at how the teams are ranked and not, "The committee thought Clemson's coach was a nice guy, so they put them higher than this other team with a jerkbag for a coach." Or whatever criteria the committee uses - they don't even tell us. Reward teams for good wins, don't penalize them for losses, and I think we'll see some good OOC match-ups.
