Recently two schools lost their AAU membership.

The B1G has received plenty of heat for admitting one of them...there's no chance they're going to add the other one as well.

Because there are only 25 TV's in the entire state.

Offers nothing that Penn State hasn't already provided to the B1G (not to mention Pitt only offers 5 or 6 varsity sports)....unless it's as a partner for ND.

Virginia is one of the core four of the ACC. They are leaving UNC, NCST & Duke. Period.

BTW where are you coming up with the #10 in AD spending? That doesn't match any of the various sources I've seen.

Who do you think would be the next four teams in?

I believe at one time that TX &/or ND were the end game.

Outside of the LHN the current upheaval actually fits the scenario laid out by the Northwestern poster who claimed to work at B1G HQ.

Texas & ND in contact...TX nudging everyone else enough to get them riled up enough to head for the hills, giving TX plausibility deniability (ie it's not 'our' fault).

Do I believe that means TX is going to end up in the B1G? No probably not (the LHN really looks more like a blueprint for independence than anything else).

If the Horns & Irish are really off the table I think Delaney's dream is the atlantic coast...primarily the core ACC schools (UNC, Duke, NCST & VA).

Again will that happen? No clue.

I see schools like Maryland, Missouri & Pitt as possibilities only if they are paired with someone who makes them more valuable (Pitt + ND, Missouri + TX, Maryland + NC etc).

The one thing I DO really like about schools like Missouri & Maryland is they have large enrollments...that alone gives them an advantage over smaller schools like VA, Syracyse & Pitt. Nothing beats long term viability than having massive numbers of alums down the road.

ps: ND should be threatened with 100% of BigTen institutions taking them off their schedules indefinitely. Period. They should have to pay a price for flipping the B1G the bird all these times. Make their athletes and fans in Chicago, Detroit, and Cincinnati have to drive that much further for games.

A-freakin'-MEN! As a long-term outsider to the Big Ten, I never understood why so many institutions continue to provide Notre Dame with quality scheduling when they continually thumb their nose at the conference. Cut them off and let them fend for themselves if they won't join the conference they so obviously belong in.

Because those institutions see value in playing ND.

Why not Kansas in the B1G? After all, we're talking about leagues that are eventually going to end up at 16 teams each. In most realistic scenarios, what better options is there for that 16th spot?

If the B1G first grabs Syracuse and Maryland or some pair similar to that, I think that would be part of a series of developments that would finally shake loose Notre Dame, and they could then become the B1G's 15th team. After that, and the accompanying moves by other conferences, the options for a 16th team are all going to have their warts. At that point I'd like to see them pick up a school that at least moves the needle in basketball rather than being thoroughly mediocre at everything (like Missouri).

I agree. I don't really get all of the Missouri love. Sure people aren't clamoring over them like people seem to be for Notre Dame and/or Texas, but they always seem to be mentioned. Is the St. Louis market that valuable and don't we already have a decent footprint there?

Kansas on there other hand, sucks most of the time for football but is a perennial basketball power. The B1G is already a solid bball conference but Kansas would take it up a notch.

I would think that(Kansas bball) would help the BTN more than adding Mizzou.

Missouri has: St. Louis, Kansas City and Springfield markets to an extent. Football starved state. Missouri has 5+ million people.

Kansas has: kinda Kansas City. Not sure on football starvation, great in basketball. Kansas has 2+ million people.

Mizzou has ~250k alum, 33k current enrolled, 94th US News ranking, AAU status, $900+ million endowment, and the UM-Health Care system.

Kansas has ??? alum, 30k currently enrolled, 104 US News ranking, AAU status, $1000+ million endowment, and the KU Medical Center (located in Kansas City).

So they are really really similar school wise, not similar population/market wise. I don't know athletically. Missouri has been pretty good in a few sports, but so has Kansas. The kicker could be KU basketball, but does that trump markets.

Personally, I like Mizzou.

I guess that's what I'm saying. Mizzou would help a little bit, but Kansas basketball could help out big time for the Big Ten's footprint. Or it could fizzle and have mediocre impact. What I'm saying is I don't see Mizzou as a home run, but neither is Kansas. But the wildcard would be Kansas basketball.

Other's have mentioned Georgia Tech and GT would be very interesting. Not sure how it would work though. Atlanta would be awesome to have as a Big Ten city (the SEC hosts their championship game there :slappy:) and it would put us right in the heart of SEC recruiting land. But Atlanta, GA is much farther away than any other B1G school. Either Columbus or Bloomington, IN would be the closest and it's probably be close to a 10 hour drive (but I guess that is the point of expansion). Plus, I would imagine even though GT is in Atlanta, Atlanta is more UGA/SEC country than GT/ACC as far as football fans go. Put it should still put the BTN far into SEC country.

GT certainly has the academics for the Big Ten and like I mentioned before, Atlanta would be a huge grab.

It will be interesting to say the least. I personally don't like the idea of 16 team superconferences but I fear that is on the horizon of College Football so the Big Ten might as well be active and not be left with scraps when the time comes.

good post....but Kansas does not have crappy academics. Kansas is one of the first AAU members. KU is not bad all-around.

Kansas is above #100 for US W&NR's top colleges. It may be AAU, but it still is near Nebraska for comparable metrics - something that I question the B1G wants to do (again).

I used the Equity in Athletics Data Analysis tool from the US Government. They provide revenue breakdowns for all colleges in America by sport and in aggregate. Virginia had a windfall last year of ~$80m due to something outside of their regular sports (which generated about $40m).

Here's the tool to find athletic P&L for any school: http://ope.ed.gov/athletics/Index.aspx

This type of comment is condescending, disrespectful, and unhelpful.

I just googled this fact and through some research found out that, assuming you include black and white televisions, there are in fact 46 in the state.

And Auntie Em and Toto are saving up to put a big screen in the storm cellar.
