Nevada, Fresno State to play in MWC in 2012

RENO, Nev. -- Nevada and Fresno State have agreed to play one more season in the Western Athletic Conference before transferring to the Mountain West Conference in 2012, but will pay significantly less to make the move than the WAC had demanded, the league said Thursday.

The two schools wanted to make the change next year, but WAC officials filed a lawsuit that said they failed to provide proper notice to leave the league and would owe the WAC a $5 million departure fee.

WAC Commissioner Karl Benson announced Thursday they reached an agreement that allows the schools to make the jump effective June 30, 2012, for a buyout of $900,000 each. That means both of their football and basketball seasons will begin in the Mountain West with the 2012 season.

I had a weird dream last night...in it Notre Dame, Pitt, North Carolina & Duke were the four schools who joined the Big Ten to go to 16 teams.

The main part of the dream revolved around the fact that it brought the total number of States in the conference to ten...thus cementing the Big Ten brand name.

Ohio
TSUN
Indiana
Iowa
Illinois
Wisconsin
Minnesota
Pennsylvania

Nebraska brought the total to 9

Pitt & ND are in States already within the conference footprint
And of course UNC & Duke are both in NC

Big East Looks To Expand

In what several sources around the Big East described as a pivotal meeting, Big East presidents and athletic directors will meet tomorrow in Philadelphia to discuss probable expansion plans, The Post has learned.
The regularly-scheduled meeting of the presidents and athletic directors figures to be intense as the BCS-football playing members of the league intend on pressing their agenda to add teams to the eight-team football conference.

.../cont/...

TCU, Houston, UCF, Temple & Villanova are rumored to be the primary candidates.

One Pitt Blogger thinks the release was meant to put pressure on 'Nova to shit or get off the pot.

Even without the possibility of poaching from other conferences I just have a hard envisioning the Big East surviving under the weight of the non-Football BB schools dictating the direction of the conference.

Clearly Hugo Simpson was the driving force behind the unholy marriage...

The Big East to expand? This is almost interesting...

Seriously though, is there a team/teams out there that could save their aq status? That would want to join? Idk...

Telling Villanova to shit or get off the pot? Why should Villanova go to the expense of elevating their football program to I-A for the benefit of the other members in a drowning football conference? Villanova charges over 50,000/yr. for tuition. It would cost them $1.1 million every year just in scholarships to make the jump. Plus, with Title IX they would have to add just as much in sports that females participate in. I don't think the Big East can assure Villanova that additional football revenue would make it at least a break-even proposition.

I think the Big East is going to overplay their hand. If they're not careful, Villanova just may get off the pot, along with all the other Catholic, basketball-only schools that really drive TV revenue for the Big East. They don't really think ESPN pays them all that money for Rutgers vs. Louisville football games on Thursday nights, do they?

Looks like the WAC will be struggling to beat out the Sun Belt to avoid being the worst FBS conference.

2012 WAC football: San Jose State, Idaho, New Mexico State, Hawaii, La. Tech, Utah State, UT-San Antonio, and Texas State

WAC to add two Texas schools, U of Denver

The Western Athletic Conference is expected to announce on Thursday the addition of the University of Texas-San Antonio and Texas State University, along with the University of Denver as a non-football member.

A person familiar with the decisions, speaking on condition of anonymity because final approval of the additions were still being worked out, told the Associated Press on Wednesday night that the three schools will become members of the WAC in 2012.

Texas-San Antonio administrators were scheduled to appear in Austin on Thursday before the UT System board of regents and discuss a change in conferences.

WAC commissioner Karl Benson had a teleconference with reporters scheduled for Thursday at 3 p.m. MST to make an announcement about WAC expansion.

The WAC needs to replace Boise State, which is moving to the Mountain West Conference after this school year, and Fresno State and Nevada, which will join the MWC in 2012.

The additions of Texas-San Antonio and Texas State will give the WAC eight football members in 2012.

UTSA is starting a football program that will begin play in 2011. Former Miami coach Larry Coker is the Roadrunners' coach.

Texas State plays in the Southland Conference in the Championship Subdivision of Division I, but has been exploring the possibility of moving up to FBS. The Bobcats are 4-5 overall and 1-4 in the Southland Conference this season.

Denver competes in the Sun Belt in most sports and does not have a football team.
...
The other members of the WAC are San Jose State, Idaho, New Mexico State, Hawaii, Louisiana Tech and Utah State.

Hawaii has been considering becoming an independent in football.

There's really a Texas State University!? I thought that was just a fake university name for that "Wildcats" movie.

Is Hayden Fox still coaching up at Minnesota State too??

:shake:

Wildcats was a high school football movie. I believe you're thinking of the Texas State Armadillos from the classic movie starring Sinbad and Quantum Leap. Necessarry Roughness.

Well, the good news is that it will be easier to find a parking stall at Aloha Stadium.

On a serious note, there is a lot of talk flying around that if UH cannot get into the Mountain West soon (and I don't see it happening unless they find a way to subsidize some of the travel expenses for the other MWC teams), they will try to go independent for football. UH's other sports would then compete in the Big West. UH has been operating at a deficit for athletics for several years, thanks to the previous A.D.'s mishandling of just about everything. It's going to take some creative thinking, and some deep pockets, (both in short supply at Manoa) to fix this situation.

Yeah, there's no way Hawaii can play football in a conference full of teams that were I-AA/FCS or non-existent ten years ago. You have a good point about being independent. I'm sure there are teams willing to fly out to the islands for a game and to give their kids a nice trip, and UH can make sure that at least some of their mainland games are big paydays if they're not chained to a conference full of teams that struggle to get 15k a game, and are only going to be broadcast if a guy streams his iPhone from the grandstands live to a website. Better get 4G for that.

My sister went to UH, and I became a casual fan while she was there, so I hope they're able to get out of the mess that the WAC's become.

UH likely to join Mountain West in football; other sports headed toward Big West

The University of Hawaii is close to ending the longest athletic conference affiliation in its history and leaving the Western Athletic Conference to join the Mountain West Conference, officials said.

MWC admission, once final details are worked out, could come as soon as the 2012-13 season. UH is expected to be required to pay a travel subsidy for teams visiting Hawaii.

Must be some higher-ups in the travel industry willing to get involved with this. This is the best possible scenario for UH overall, except for possibly men's basketball, so let's hope that the Board of Regents doesn't screw this up.

Cha-Ching....

TV deal with Fox estimated to bring Big Ten up to $25 mil per year

Speaking of smart, the Big Ten obviously was wise to add Nebraska and create a title game. It promises to pay for a lot of shoulder pads and lacrosse sticks. A source said the league?s six-year agreement with Fox Sports will be worth between $20-$25 million per season. At $22 million, divided equally among 12 campuses and the conference office, each school will get $1.7 million richer each year. The $22 million figure is more than analysts had estimated, given that the SEC title game is believed to be worth $14-$15 million a year
