But, but... Those "fat, stupid checks" are all speculative and estimated right now, despite all the press releases from both Beebe and Dodds/Brown touting them. No new television contract has been negotiated and signed, nor is it expected to for another year.

Agreed - just saying IF it materializes, but I've been trying to sound the "there's no deal" alarm...

Meanwhile, Nebraska Chancellor Perlman is on record as saying he doesn't think any separation penalties are appropriate.

In other words, all the press releases about alllllllllll the money the remaining members will be getting, may end up shooting the Big 12 in the foot. Will be interesting for sure.

I love it... if there's a deal, there's no money, if there's no deal, there's no money... Beebe is becoming the best idiot-villain since Bike Hart...

In other news... Utah has been invited to the Pac-10. Will be in South division. Presser tomorrow at 1 PM MDT.

Pac-10 invites Utah; source says Utes to accept - ESPN

Pac-10 North: Washington, Washington State, Oregon, Oregon State, Cal, Stanford
Pac-10 South: USC, UCLA, Arizona, Arizona State, Utah, Colorado

Disappointing that it's not the California+Arizona schools together, but here's hoping Utah wins the south in 2011 when USC's still on probation.

I hope they don't (and I'm guessing they won't) Cancel games between UCLA / SC and Cal... those make reasonbly fun Saturdays when you can be on the UCLA or Cal Campuses...

I would think not... since the Pac-10 already plays a 9-game conference schedule (and fortuitously, Colorado/Utah as well as Colorado/Cal are already scheduled to play each other in future years), they can afford to do a 5+2+2 schedule- 5 permanent divisional matchups, 2 protected cross-conference rivals, and then 2 rotating games that alternate every 2 years (if they keep the 9 game schedule, that is). So USC and UCLA would probably always play Cal and Stanford as protected cross-divisional rivals.

I'm not sure how else they could split it. CU is already way off the reservation and since ASU and AU were the last two adds to the Pac 8, you had to think they would stick them with the newbies. Personally with USC having sanctions, this is a great opportunity for the two Arizona Schools.

I know your bustin my balls Maxbuck but in reality...the better the product the better the ratings. Plain and simple...those projections are nice and those markets are big but if the product sucks nobodys gonna watch no matter whos playin. No degree in Marketing just using common sense.
Did they sell out the 'shoe for Miami, Cincinnati, Akron, YSU, Ohio, Toledo, BG, Kent, Navy, Little Sisters of the Poor and three teams to be named later? Of course they did and that's part of the charm of what Texas is selling. Want a shot at those October in Jerryland tickets with Oklahoma or a chance to watch the Aggies play squirrel in November? Better buy a ticket to the Baylor/T Tech/Mother Teresa games.

Shit happens and frequently, marketed correctly, shit sells.

If you think about it, the easiest way to implement a playoff system is to have two mega conferences, each composed of two divisions, with the conference title games essentially becoming the semi-finals and the title game matching up the champs of the two conferences. Sorta like the NL and the AL.

Conference expansions and implosions aren't the ultimate end-game here. If teams decide to take the catalytic steps to join conferences that aren't in their traditional sphere of audience, and conferences like the B12 and the ACC start disappearing, a two mega-division scenario might be the only way where all the traditional BCS teams have a fair shot at playing for the title game. The SEC pretty much has one spot locked up in the BCS title game, and if you add Neb, ND and Texas to the B10, well, you can do the math.

It's ultimately in the best interest of the major powers to preserve their regional leverage while preserving a semblance of fairness to the lesser teams in the BCS conferences for their own financial coffers and for the stability of the system.

I wouldn't sell Utah short. They may be in the MWC, but they can play football.

In 2003, Utah was the beneficiary of the leftovers from Salt Lake City hosting the Winter Olympics. New stadium. New dorms all across campus. New transportation system. Training facilities fit for Olympic athletes. Urban Meyer took one look at what was being offered to him and said, "Hell yes I'll take this job!" and they've been rolling ever since. How would you like to go to school and have a dorm that was formerly an apartment in an Olympic Village? Over the past seven years, they're 7-3 against the Pac-10, 6-1 in bowls with two BCS bowl wins, and have gone undefeated twice. They didn't have much tradition before this decade, but then, $1.3 billion dollars of US taxpayer money can get you where you need to go.

$1.3 billion dollars.

Orrin Hatch can EABOD & DIAF. Next time he complains about the inequities of the system I hope somebody kung-fu's him in the Adam's Apple.

Oh ... wait, Orrin Hatch won't be complaining anymore I'll bet.

I do remember reading awhile back that Oregon & Washington schools would want to be assured that they would be guaranteed to play some California schools to keep their recruiting ties there.

So it would make sense that they would split the California schools.

Either Kansas doesn't understand the deal it made or Beebe was talking out of his ass...

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- The Kansas athletic director says the five Big 12 schools that were not invited to join other conferences offered to give money to Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma in hope of keeping the league together.
Athletic director Lew Perkins also said Wednesday the five offered to share money from their portion of overall conference revenue, not whatever penalty money Colorado and Nebraska wind up paying for leaving the Big 12.
There had been considerable confusion on that point. Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe said Tuesday that Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, Missouri and Baylor had offered to give Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma all or part of the exit penalty money.
Calls to the Big 12 office in Dallas for comment were not immediately returned.

This deal is hanging together by chewed gum, duct tape, and an Aggy jizz jar.

I've seen it referenced numerous times on Shaggy Bevo. It's real, but I have no desire to find out what the hell it is.

OK, I googled it. Apparently, the cadets all whack off into a glass jar that gets set on top of the bonfire. The "jizz jar" is to symbolize that Texas is teh ghey. Because, let's face it; the guys dressed up in soldier costumes having a circle jerk are the epitome of heterosexuality.
that's not true........right?

Mountain West Expansion?

In the long run, I think it'd be a good idea for the MWC to add Fresno State and/or Houston, possibly even Nevada as well. I think for football they are above-average to very strong teams and can help solidify their eventual bid into the BCS. What do you guys think?
