If you've ever gotten into the "The Big Ten can't count" argument, note that with CU in the Pac-10 but UNL technically still a member of the Big XII, as of today (and probably today only), the Big Ten, Pac 10, and Big XII all have eleven members. Nobody can count.

Who the fuck cares what you call it? No matter how many teams the B10 takes, they should keep the same name... it just doesn't matter.

It seems like there are more than a few posters that feel like Texas will become a reality... I dont get it, nothing other than a mildcat board and a kc news station is supporting this. I dont see Texas leading everyone on including their own fan base then pulling the rug out from under them.... If anyone can convince me otherwise I would love it.... I would like ND aTm and Texas.... but seems like a pipe dream.
There's a lot more to it than choosing to believe one report over some other. Think it through from Texas' perspective....

It seems like the two most viable alternatives right now are the Pac 10 or the Big 10.

What does the Pac 10 give Texas? Sure, the Pac 10 is willing to sell their soul to get UT, but so what? Here's what Texas is facing in the Pac 10
Travel from UT to Seattle for possible Central time zone start time of 11PM. This game might play until 2:30am, Central. Likewise, there's really no assurance it'll be on TV. Even if it's on locally (ie pac 10 and Texas locations) it won't be national, so Texas is under exposed. The promise of a Pac 10 network really isn't quite a viable as the Big 10 network. That's the brilliance of Delany's plan - the Big 10 has alumni all over the place - the "upside" of deteroirating population in the midwest. As such, there's demand nationwide to have a BTN. Pac 10 grads tend to stay right where they have always been - California in particular. How many Arizona grads do you run in to out east? Ever have lunch with a U dub guy in Pittsburgh? Doubt it. In short, the proposed Pac 10 network isn't really a national demand sort of thing (in my opinion, anyway) - that's not to say the Pac 10 doesn't have some people in NYC, etc.. but not enough to make it a "MUST HAVE" channel.

What does the Big Ten give Texas? Well, less "control" and a deal that on the surface doesn't "cater" to them at all. (Equal partner). But... The BTN is on all over the nation, and more importantly it's on in Chicago, New York, etc.. Do you think Texas might have an interest in having east coast exposure? I do. No one is watching at 11pm central (or midnight, EST), but everyone is watching at 8PM. The BTN exists... it's real right now, and it's making huge chunks of money. Texas would be silly to not want a piece of that pie.

This isn't as simple as "Well, they can go to dominate the Pac 10 in football, especially with USC on probation" 1 - USC won't be on probation forever. 2 - I doubt Texas is "afraid" of competing in a conference which has more than 1 other big time team.

It goes back to exposure - who is tuning in for Texas v. Cal? Texas v. Washington State? Texas v. Oregon? Oregon State? Arizona? Arizona State? Etc. Now, who's tuning in for Texas Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame (if it happpens) Iowa, Wisconsin?

Anyway, it's not as simple as "why should we believe this story or that" it's pretty obvious when you think it through - the Big 10's biggest advantage has been built out of the very thing which caused it's need - Population moving away. Delany, to his credit, has turned that in to a plus instead of a minus, and it's a big, big deal.

I have no problem believing that if there's a real seismic shift in conference alignments that schedules as soon as 2011 will be retooled.

I'm getting giddy about a road trip to Lincoln to see the Bucks. A very viable prospect for me :)

Jagdaddy and NFBuck - ROADTRIP!!

I'm most excited about traveling to Austin if they do in fact join the conference. That would become one of the best rivalries in sports. I wasn't on this board during the 05 and 06 exchanges between the fanbases, but I always hear those threads mentioned with regards to what pre game threads SHOULD be like. I would love to have that sort of thing happen yearly and it would be such a good time to go down and see a Texas-OSU football game and really take it all in.
Seriously, even when Iowa is good, I don't want to fucking go to Iowa. Nebraska on the other hand, one of the most storied programs in history with the record for most consecutive sold out games sounds like a blast. I'd love nothing more than to go to ND and cuss my ass off as the Bucks destroy the Domers...and I'm Catholic.
If this dream of Texas, Nebraska, and ND joining the B10 does in fact become a reality, I'll have that chick Jax give Jimmy D a well deserved lap dance.

"Continuing to hear that Nebraska could start Big Ten play in 2011."
Iiiiiinteresting...
If you think about it, starting the new lineup in 2011 isn't a big stretch. If Colorado is in the Pac10, Nebraska, Texas and A&M are in the Big 10 and Oklahoma is in the SEC and the other teams are in other conferences, how much are those teams going to try to have a 2011 season?

The only real problems are shuffling around non-conference games and determining new divisions/schedules.

It?s All About Texas ? FRANK THE TANK?S SLANT

Frank the Tank (the comments are more informative than the articles) is now of the mind that what we're waiting on is a decision from Notre Dame.

Specifically, Big East Commissioner Marrinato has given Swarbrick an ultimatum: Get in or get out. We're not carrying you around for your non-revenue sports while other conferences raid us for football teams because you won't play ball. If we can get a Kansas or Missouri we need to do it now. We don't need you for the NY market because our conference is already made up of a bunch of New England-based basketball powers and catholic schools, and you sure as hell don't contribute anything to us in terms of football exposure.

More insidious, it's being speculated that Delany set this up, by calling Marrinato and telling him to either give Notre Dame a push out the door or we come and take Syracuse and Rutgers and the conference falls apart. Look what we just did to the Big XII, and all we had to do to set that in motion was feed rumors to some Internet message board wonks.

So ... yeah. Kick out Notre Dame or ESPN will be reporting that 'Cuse has an offer on tonights 6:00 SportsCenter. Good luck fending off the ACC and SEC who come for the candy once we've whacked open that pinata of your conference. And by the way ... we'll still wind up with Notre Dame.

Delany. Out.

I am really starting to believe that Texas to the Big Ten is a done deal. On top of that when PBC writes the book on all of this we will find out that the deal was done before the Big Ten announced that they were looking at expansion. The rest has been part of a exit strategy for Texas and the Big 12.

On top of what PBC has said there is the "Tech" problem. Why wasn't it a A&M problem? Because there was already a plan for A&M...the SEC.

I wouldn't put too much into road trips to Texas and Nebraska. OSU would only play 2 or 3 games a year against the Big 10 west. With 3 games and an 8 team division you are looking at needing up to 5 years to visit every school. With a 7 team division and 3 games you have 4 years to visit every school. Finally in a 8 team division and only 2 games, which I think is more likely if the Big 10 would get to 16 teams, it will take 7 years to have a game at every school in the other division.
On the bright side even in the worst case scenario you will at least play every team in the other division every 3-4 years. Hopefully as OSU fans we would get to see the Buckeyes play one of the better teams in the West almost every year in the CCG. :p

it may be true that aTm had a plan for the SEC but the reason Tech is a problem is because they are a teir 3 school. aTm is one of the top public research institutions in the US. Their only problem is a Napoleon complex.

side note: last time i defend aggy, but it really is a great public school

Don't know if they would do it but there could be a pod system. 4 groups of 4 where each plays the other three teams every year and then 2 teams from from the other 3 pod on a rotation.

That's OK. Right-wing militant homophobes deserve a good education like everybody else.

I'd really like to see A&M in the Pac-10. I'd buy tickets just to watch Aggie fans walk around the Berkley campus.
