So... did we give up on Notre Dame, are we trying to change the way we play this, or did they outright turn us down with an unequivocal and resounding "no" for the last time.
To hit lots of home runs (Delany's expression from his email to Gee) the schools have to be enticed to join in a particular order. Texas won't leave the Big XII unless it collapses. Notre Dame won't join a conference unless it sees superconferences as an inevitability. Nebraska, on the other hand, already has the Mayflowers loaded and ready to go.

Take Nebraska to collapse the Big XII, grab Texas once they're free, then Notre Dame will be forced to come along. If the Big XII does not collapse then the Big Ten could conceivably stop with just Nebraska at 12 and it's not a bad consolation prize for now. If all hell breaks loose and Notre Dame thinks they'll take refuge in the Big East, then the Big Ten will blow that up too by grabbing at least 'Cuse.

Notre Dame, you're joining the Big Ten whether you want to or not, so just do it already.

I don't know if just one team leaving kills the Big XII outright, but without some sort of shuffling it would be the most imbalanced two divisions in football history.

I say we go for Oklahoma State and when they join we go to the PAC 10 and offer the Beavers.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish, AD Jack Swarbrick ensnared in irrational time - ESPN[/quote]

Best portion of the Forde piece:

Among the myths growing in the information vacuum is that this is an athletic issue -- all about the TV revenue, right? The reality, Swarbrick said, is that this is being driven much more by the academic side of campus at most schools than the athletic side. Presidents and chancellors see this as a rare opportunity to change their educational neighborhood and better their universities in the process.

"If there's anything about this I think is widely misunderstood, it's the extent to which academic decisions are influencing this," Swarbrick said. "They sort of underline the very discussion here in a way the general sports fan can't really appreciate."

Also, I believe that comment tipped NDs hand a bit...

Didn't think that about Forde at all. At least from that particular article.

Completely oversold ND's dedication to the B.East, undersold their diminishing role in college football relative to TV revenues and other powerhouse schools. Ignored the sad implications of ND all alone following mega-conference expansion. Ignored the fact that Delaney, from a business sense, is running circles around ND. Didn't come close to emphasizing that ND's interests, like many if not most schools, include revenue, and that not aligning with a mega conference - without question - makes them less money than, say, the B10 would...

Chip Brown at Orangebloods working overtime.

Orangebloods.com - Source: Nebraska regents clear path to Big Ten

A source close to the Nebraska Board of Regents told Orangebloods.com the regents met informally Wednesday and have agreed to move to the Big Ten and that a formal announcement Nebraska is leaving will come Friday.

Sources close to Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech have suggested to Orangebloods.com over the last week that if Nebraska leaves, the Big 12 can't be saved.

A Fox television report out of Ohio said Nebraska now has an invitation from the Big Ten.

One of the reasons given for Nebraska's importance to the league is because the relationship between Missouri and the rest of the Big 12 has soured beyond repair.

And to complicate matters for Missouri, the Tigers appear to be falling down the list of priorities for the Big Ten.

An athletic director with knowledge of the Big Ten said, "Missouri is getting cold shoulder from Big Ten."

Cont'd ...

And for those that don't bother with the link ... the juicy bit about Notre Dame.

The future of the Big 12 appeared to hinge on the Big Ten's deliberations with Notre Dame. The Big Ten has promised Notre Dame it will stop its expansion at 12 schools if Notre Dame agrees to finally forgo its independence and become part of a conference, an athletic director with knowledge of the Big Ten has told Orangebloods.com.

Notre Dame is apparently locked in a battle among its Board of Trustees about what to do. There are some who fear the Irish being left out of the formation of what could well become four, super conferences in college athletics. That could cost Notre Dame its access to a BCS bid.

Once again, Notre Dame appears reluctant to do what's best for their academic's because of the football team.
