Any two of UVA, GA Tech and Vandy would be a smarter move than Tejas and Aggie. Together those two just aren't worth the trouble and I'm inclined to think that even UT alone would just turn out to be an enormous pain in the ass.

With Neb, Mizzou, and Notre Dame, the Big Ten can make a final offer to Texas. Take it or leave it ... walk away from a truly national conference with Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State ... walk away from the CIC ... walk away from the grants, the funding, etc etc and play your football in the Pacific Time Zone on the Vs network in games that don't kick off until 11:30 EST, while Nebraska and Iowa play a nationally televised game every year the day after Thanksgiving.

The Texas legislature is not in session, and the Texas governor is an Aggie with eyes for the SEC. If there is any possible way to get Texas and Texas alone, this is probably it.

What's really amazing is the domer boards. They truly believe that if 4 16-team superconferences form instituting a de-facto playoff, that ND will be allowed to stay independent and have a playoff path carved out for them. If the domers do opt out, watch them try to present themselves as the champions of the little guy and play the mid-majors against the superconfernces in some self-serving power play.

If they're smart enough to actually join, it's going to be a blast watching those boards implode.

Spelling Nazi

The general rule is that spelling doesn't matter on the internet, so please pardon my OCD while I point something out.

It's Jim Delany, not "Delaney". Even though a great many bloggers (and even a few journalists who should know better) add the second "e"; it is unnecessary (according to bigten.org anyway).

Now, go back to talking about the latest rumors.

Speaking of which, mark me down as seriously doubting the rumor that Nebraska, Mizzou and ND will be officially asked to apply for membership this week. Delany hasn't informed the Big 12 that he wants to talk to NU and Mizzou. I seriously doubt that happens AND the offers are extended in the next 36 hours.

The only reason I'm paying attention... that... I don't want to miss.

You might want to follow NDSMC78 on their Rivals board. He's a beut' Says ND should drop football before joining a conference. He's like an obstinate "special needs" child. Nobody--not even other domers--can engage him. It's just pure, "conference bad" "conference never happen" "conferences always give notre dame what it wants."

And no, I'm not posting. Just enjoying the show.

I think he has and the offers have already been extended. That's why the Big XII meetings were contentious and the ultimatum issued to those two schools specifically.

Why would Kansas chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little publicly plead with Nebraska and Missouri to not bolt? Because she knows they're gone.

Why would the Mountain West decide at the eleventh hour not to extend an invite to Boise St? Because they just realized KU, KSU, ISU, and CU are available prizes.

Why would the AD of Colorado not shoot down the rumor of a possible Pac-16 merger? Because the rumor is true, he knows the Big XII is on the verge of collapse.

Although Beebe did recently state publicly that he hasn't been contacted, I concede that it is entirely possible that he isn't being entirely truthful. The same could be said for Swarbrick.

The Sparty President said yesterday that any school needs to "apply" for admission. Now, I'm sure those schools (like a Bush "applying to Yale) will already know they're accepted. But for technical reasons, I believe the first public move needs to be made by the invitees.

No doubt - and think about this. If 5 Texas teams come into the Big Ten, they will have a voting block big enough to stop anything the conference wants to do in the future. The only way I would let Texas in is if they are coming in as the only team from Texas.

The post that Dryden quoted did use the phrase "officially asked to apply for membership".
