Best/Worst current CFB coaches (CFN, SI)

Being a ND fan I have to throw Weis in there because of what he did with Willinghams poor classes and worthless development, plus he has hit recruiting hard, great 06 class and already building an even better 07 class, Tressel definatly (although his decision of throwing damn, uh, cant remember the white qb's name for the life of me in the Texas game after Smith had the O on a roll still baffles me), Stoops and Ferentz as well... ah Zwick I remembered

Nah, can't agree. Let's see how Charlie does after at least 3 years.

Letdown games...those are the breath of college football. They will happen to every coach.

Anyway, I am confused with your criteria though...

Pat Hill has gone 72-43 with 7 Bowl Games at Fresno State. I agree he is not Top 5 with years like:

1997--6-6
1998--5-6
1999--8-5
2000--7-5
2001--11-3
2002--9-5
2003--9-5
2004--9-3
2005--8-5

However, you included Mike Bellottti in your top 5 though...

1995--9-3
1996--6-5
1997--7-5
1998--8-4
1999--9-3
2000--10-2
2001--11-1
2002--7-6
2003--8-5
2004--5-6
2005--10-2

I see three exceptional seasons in there...yet he is top five with 5 seasons of at least 5 losses? 11 seasons, five 5-loss campaigns and he is a top 5 coach in America?

The difference is he coaches in the Pac-10 and does it with average recruiting classes. I'll admit that was a bit of a homer pick but almost every coach has atleast one 5-loss season. John Cooper had like 4 straight years of atleast 10 wins yet he also had some 5 and 6-loss seasons. Of course every coach has letdown games, but Pat Hill has too many of them and they always seem to cost him the WAC.

Mike Belloti's accomplishments at Oregon:

92-42(.686 win pctg)
2 Pac-10 titles
A #2 final ranking(highest in school history)
3 10-win seasons(Only 10-win seasons in school history)

I just think what he's done at Oregon which is a rainy and cold weather state and doesn't have great high school football like Cali, Florida, Ohio, and Texas is very impressive.

No way Pat Hill is one of the best coaches. Has he even won the WAC once??? He's not afraid to schedule the big boys but he never beats them and he always has let down games. Pat Hill might be top 20 but he's no where near top 5.

He beats the big boys all the time. He's beaten Virginia, ucla, Georgia Tech, Colorado, and Wisconsin. Plus KSU, Oregon State, Cal, and Washington.

Average recruiting classes at Oregon would be all-time classes at Fresno...if we are using the "less talent" argument, there is no comparison.

but almost every coach has atleast one 5-loss season.

It happens...but when it happens almost 50% of the time, you are not a top 5 coach in America.

Once again, Fresno St. plays in the WAC, not Pac-10. Also, .682% aint half bad.

...and what does that have to do with "average" recruiting classes or 5 5-loss seasons in 11 years?

Once again, I'm not singing the praises of Pat Hill, but I am questioning the choice of Bellotti as a top 5 coach. .682 ain't half bad...but it isn't anything to brag about either...especially not for a top 5 coach in the country.

I put out an All-Whiner poll last year and Stompin' Steve was a consensus choice.

Steve is a whiner, but he does say some funny things sometime. If I remember the story correctly, after one interception, Doug Johnson went to go explain to the Spurrier what happened. Spurrier stopped him mid-sentence and said, 'Don't be mad at yourself, I recruited you.' Things like that, and, 'You can't spell Citrus without UT' are somewhat funny

Maybe we should do All-Pompus-Ass this year. I put Charlie Weiss in for captain on that bunch. IVLloyd gets a vote. Jon Grunden...

Charlie can be the craptain, but Stevie's gotta be the 'Ole Pompus Coach.:tongue2:

Did you read my earlier post? I admitted it was a bit of a homer pick. Oregon has to compete with Washington, UCLA, USC, Cal, Stanford, and even the Arizona schools who consistently have better recruiting classes because they have better high school football prospects in their states and play in warm weather states with the exception of Washington. Belloti isn't doing it at a school that sells itself like Georgia, LSU, Florida, USC, etc. which is what makes it impressive. If I remember correctly, he was offered a job by most of the high profile schools so they obviously think he can get it done. All Pat Hill has to do is compete with Boise St. and he should have the upperhand by playing in a big state like California which sells itself better than Boise, Idaho.

Edit-I've seen Beamer menioned on here. I think Belloti compares well to him.

I think that's a .638 winning percentage. Frank has 3 below .500 seasons also.

so Oregon has to compete with USC, UCLA, Cal, Stanford (how are the last two above Oregon?)... and even Washington/Arizona (despite having equal or better distance to Cal recruits)... but Fresno doesn't? Just b/c they are in the WAC doesn't mean he gets his own crop of talent.

In terms of recruiting. I know Oregon has much better recruiting classes than Fresno St. but you have to compare what conference they're in. Oregon is usually somewhere around 5th in the Pac-10 in recruiting classes. I'm not sure on this so please correct me if I'm wrong but Fresno St. usually has one of the top 2 recruiting classes in the WAC yet has only won it once under Pat Hill.
