Best/Worst current CFB coaches (CFN, SI)

Being a ND fan I have to throw Weis in there because of what he did with Willinghams poor classes and worthless development, plus he has hit recruiting hard, great 06 class and already building an even better 07 class, Tressel definatly (although his decision of throwing damn, uh, cant remember the white qb's name for the life of me in the Texas game after Smith had the O on a roll still baffles me), Stoops and Ferentz as well... ah Zwick I remembered

One year doesn't make a good coach.

yeah he did,,, hey ginn, holmes run past nd's slow secondary, smith let it fly,, i tell ya what though, if osu's D gels and is as good as you and the players say it is,,, well then im guessing its back to zona for you guys.. hope to see you there
Spot on with the first point. If CW hadn't adjusted to a 3-step drop, Brady would have never finished the game. The fact that it took God, er I mean CW, so long to adjust, doesn't correlate with a coaching mensa candidate.

As far as the "6 weeks to prepare" talk, I disagree completely. I thought that JT had a great game plan and playcalling

Given the talent pool in Ohio and the nearby states, I wouldnt exactly call Ohio non-recruiting friendly. Make an argument for weather maybe...but even that is not a major factor. Louisiana produces some solid talent as well...

I'd agree with that - in truth the failing of coaches at LSU prior to Saban turning things around, was letting top talent in-state get pulled into the Georgia / Florida sphere of influence. And a lot of that talent slipped through past coaches fingers because of the lack of rapport between LSU and the Parishes.

Louisiana produces a sick amount of talent-it might be the #1 producer of NFL talent per capita. Qualifying might be a problem, but talent-wise, Louisiana takes a back seat to no state. Miles did a good job his first year in coralling the majority of in-state talent. I think he did a really good job his first year, given the fact that he had to deal w/ Katrina after the 2nd game of the year.

No particular order:

Jim Tressel (obviously)
Urban Meyer (2 time coach of the year. UF will be something to watch)
Bob Stoops (no I didn't like him at UF, cause I didn't live in Florida then or go to school here)
Steve Spurrier (no I didn't like him at UF, so it is not a homer thing. He is just good)
Bobby Bowden (great recruiter)

I know it seems Florida, Ohio bias, but I honestly believe those are the best coaches. In reality I never was here for Bob, and barely made Steve Spurrier(whom I didn't like). But I recignize talent when I see it. I also love Spurriers honesty for what it is.

Bowden while maybe my college 'enemy' is still a great guy even though his teams(and current coaches ***cough*** family issues ***cough***) are not living up to expectations.

Nice to see Paul Johnson get some well-deserved credit. Does a great job of utilizing the talent that he has available, and he is one of the best around at making offensive adjustments during a game. Wouldn't shock me to see him end up at an ACC or SEC school in the near future.

No way Pat Hill is one of the best coaches. Has he even won the WAC once??? He's not afraid to schedule the big boys but he never beats them and he always has let down games. Pat Hill might be top 20 but he's no where near top 5.

In 9 years in the WAC, he has 1 co-championship (an 8-5 mark in 1999). His best year (11-3 in 2001) included a tough loss to Boise State.

I like his attitude of "anybody, anywhere, any time", but I also believe he's the only coach being mentioned in this thread that currently has a 4-game losing streak. Bowden's 1-4 in his last 5.

5 best coaches

1. Jim Tressel he is way better than second place.
2. Bob Stoops he out coaches Mack Brown every yr with less talent.
3. Frank Beamer he has VT rolling.
4. Pete Carroll I don't any of us like him but we all have to respect what he has done at USC.
5. Mark Richt he is a very good coach SEC is tough.

The 5 most overrated coaches are

1. Mack Brown he has won 1 conference title as coach. And has had plenty of talent. And if he did not have superman he would still be looking for his 1st.
2. Larry Coker he has made Miami turn into Georiga Tech it is sad.
3. Lloyd Carr long gone are the days of winning late in Nov he is on a downward spiral.
4. Bobby Bowden his team plays out of control and they only have like 3 plays on offense.
5. Fat Fulmer he has never been a good coach. He lucked out to win a title from the Ark QB getting his foot stepped on fumble to play FSU with there 3rd string QB named the rooster to the MSU disaster we all still remember.

Letdown games...those are the breath of college football. They will happen to every coach.

Anyway, I am confused with your criteria though...

Pat Hill has gone 72-43 with 7 Bowl Games at Fresno State. I agree he is not Top 5 with years like:

1997--6-6
1998--5-6
1999--8-5
2000--7-5
2001--11-3
2002--9-5
2003--9-5
2004--9-3
2005--8-5

However, you included Mike Bellottti in your top 5 though...

1995--9-3
1996--6-5
1997--7-5
1998--8-4
1999--9-3
2000--10-2
2001--11-1
2002--7-6
2003--8-5
2004--5-6
2005--10-2

I see three exceptional seasons in there...yet he is top five with 5 seasons of at least 5 losses? 11 seasons, five 5-loss campaigns and he is a top 5 coach in America?
