Best/Worst current CFB coaches (CFN, SI)

I get what you are saying, and i agree, but notre dame hasnt had the type of players he is bringing in for a long time... our WRs dropped a few big passes against you guys in that game,, still wouldnt have mattered, Holmes and Ginn torched our supposed secondary
I agree completely but I need more proof. Charlie was very late to adjust to a 3 step drop in the Fiesta Bowl. Those kind of mistakes happen...and they cost you ballgames. His gameplan against USC was tremendous. I fully expect him to be on this list in the next few years...if not this year. Then again, he could just as easily end up as more hype than substance. Therefore, I need more proof...

was the 3-step drop there all day, or was that more the result of a prevent D? While it yielded lots of yardage, there were a good number of <7 yard plays which milked the clock.

Couldn't answer that on more than basic memory right now, but when your QB is getting killed or flushed on step #5 or 7, you better start changing the pace.

Basically, after all of the "6 weeks of preparation" talk...I wasn't impressed with the gameplan or the playcalling.

More with Less

Petrino
Tom O'Brien
Paul Johnson
Gary Walker
Pat Hill

B. Bowden
Coker

Carr
Callahan

These is some good analysis. I think Dan Hawkins goes near the top on the "more with less" list for his tenure at Boise State, and I think Michigan State is perpetually in the "less with more" list.

Who is Paul Johnson? This year will be the real test for Callahan at Nebraska-some early polls have them pre-season top 10.

Im saying if he is lopping off Carroll because of what he will have next year seems like he is going very short term... as far as willingham, he never had the fire you need at a school like notre dame or ohio state,, the 06 and so far of the 07 classes of recruiting look great, and he somewhat saved the 05 class... and with what willingham left him (or didnt leave him i should say) for a defense I think he did a great job.. now 9-3 is not good enough for me, just like bucks going 9-3 isnt good enough for you guys... i expect Notre Dame to continually be top 5 for at least the next 5 years.. and could honestly see Ohio State and Notre Dame playing each other regularly at the end of the season... so like i said, being a notre dame fan (and suffering through the years of incompetent coaching) i put Weis on the list. He would be number 5 on my list

So to re-phrase in the negative, Weis was no better than 9-3 last year, not good enough by Domer standards - yet you still think he is a top 5 coach.

Like grad21 said - I need more proof. Get through your top 6 games untainted next year for instance, that would be a start. I'll leave it at that before I draw any more weighty conclusions on the merits of Weis.

Would help if he beat some teams with less than 5 losses at the end of the year too.

1. Jim Tressel - Comparable stats to any of the big-state coaches (Cali, Tejas, Florida) with a worse situation for recruiting (snow, smaller state, no hollywood or miami, lack of non-polluted beaches, etc.) Add to that the huge number of NFL players developed and you've got a titanic presence at the top of college football.
2. Larry Kehres - 8 Div III titles, 16 conference titles, 231-20-3/.915 record at Mt. Union. It's hard to argue with stats like that, at any level.
3. Les Miles - He's poised to win the National Title, and Louisiana is in an even less recruiting-friendly place than Ohio. If it wasn't for Katrina, he may have played for the title this year.
4. Bob Stoops - He's done more than Mack Brown, even though Oklahoma is essentially the same situation as Texas, but with a little bit less of everything.
5. Mack Brown - He wins more than pretty much any other DI-A coach, and now that he's won a title he's shown the ability to win in the biggest games.

Honorable Mentions: Pete Carroll, Mark Richt, Kirk Ferentz, Rick Rodriguez, Steve Spurrier

Spot on with the first point. If CW hadn't adjusted to a 3-step drop, Brady would have never finished the game. The fact that it took God, er I mean CW, so long to adjust, doesn't correlate with a coaching mensa candidate.

As far as the "6 weeks to prepare" talk, I disagree completely. I thought that JT had a great game plan and playcalling
