Best Restaurant/Steak House in Cbus?

Next over-rated - Smith & Wolinsky. This place also sucks. I think there is another one somewhere, but I've only been to the one at Easton. Over-priced for sub-average food. No way I'll ever go back.

Ruth's Criss (or however you spell it) - first filet mignon I've ever had that was more fat than meat. In fact, I don't remember ever having filet that had any fat. Service also sucked.

Mitchell's - average. About what you'd expect, good food, good service.

Hyde Park - best in Cbus, bar none, and it isn't a contest. Great atmosphere, great service, best steak in the city. They also have numerous options for steak (sauce, toppings, etc.).

I'd agree with this assesment from FKA.

S&W is way over rated. In their defense I will say that the service bordering on rude/arrogant is kinda their schtick. You should expect it. But I'll never return to their location at Easton.

Ruth's Cris has always been good for me. Good food. Expensive.

Same for Mitchell's. Good food. Expensive.

Hyde Park ... excellent all the way around.

Here's one I haven't heard yet ... The Top. No way you'd go there to impress anyone with atmosphere, but dollar for dollar the best steak place you'll find. You'll feel like you just stepped into the 50s, but well worth the experience if you're not into the pretentious culinary snob routine.

you write that you've eaten at every steakhouse in columbus, but i see no mention of morton's. i know excellent steak when i eat it (unfortunately, i know bad steak, too), and i know that morton's is always excellent. therefore, speaking for myself only, i would not give hyde park a "bar none" distinction.

if your parents are buckeye fans, buckeyeflorida, hyde park would be the place to go. morton's doesn't have steak tressel.

Man, someone must have edited my post...Morton's is the second best steak in town. I still think Hyde Park is much better, but I've never had a bad experience or a bad steak at Morton's. I can't believe I didn't mention them.

Anyhoo, how did the little shindig with the in-laws go? Where did you eat?

Is that the place in Bexley?

If so, my in-laws have gone there and love the place.

3yards - where is this "Top" you speak of?

The Top Steakhouse
2891 E Main St
Columbus, OH 43209-2614

Technically Columbus Thump, but I suppose folks could classify that as Bexely. Fairly close anyway.

Here's a few reviews out of citysearch: http://columbus.citysearch.com/review/7857820

Here's the reviewer's write up:

Citysearch Editorial Profile -- By Tracy Zollinger Turner

An old-school steakhouse experience featuring great service and a moody atmosphere.

Editorial Rating: Recommended

The Scene
It's no coincidence that the Top has been in business since the Rat Pack era--you can just imagine Frank and company huddling around the booths in the dining room, warmed by the fireplace light. A pianist and vocalist routinely perform jazz standards in the center of the space, serenading diners and bar conversationalists. A secondary dining room has large windows which, unfortunately, overlook the parking lot.

The Food
Before ordering, tables are served a cold plate of deli pickles and sauerkraut. For steak, there is no place better; the filet mignon is incredibly tender and mouthwatering. The surf and turf is also tempting, but the lobster tail can be served a bit dry. Unlike other steakhouses, all dinners come with salad and potatoes; large, basic side dishes like broccoli and asparagus can be ordered separately.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go
On Saturday and Sunday, the Top only accepts reservations for parties of five or more. Any other night, reservations can be made for groups of any size.

What to Drink
This is the place to try red wine. While the wine list has several pages of options, the page of recommended labels has reasonably priced, more adventuresome choices.

When to Go
The Top is the favorite steakhouse of Bexleyites and the scene of many dates, graduation dinners and trips out with grandma.
