Bengals WR Chris Henry (official thread)

I put in the Sean Taylor thread but Florida has some stiff mandated sentencing for crimes involving a gun.

These two dumbfucks could both very well be looking at the end of their careers.

when a player ends his own career due to legal issues, does the team still have to pay them very much? I'm just asking in general, i'm sure certain contracts are different.

I thought NFL contracts were never guarenteed. So Henry could be cut for whatever reason and he'll never see 2006-07 money. Some players may have clauses that require them to return parts of their signing bonus if they screw up. Henry might have been one of those players, but he was only a 3rd round pick so I doubt his signing bonus was big enough to warrant any kind of stipulation.

Correct. No guaranteed money in the NFL.

Whatever siging bonus he's gotten is the only money he's guaranteed to see and 3rd round signing bonuses aren't shit.

At the very least, you can be sure his days in Cincy are over. Marvin can't afford to let the team go in this direction after finally getting rid of all the Carl Pickens/Corey Dillon type attitudes. As someone stated earlier, gun crimes are no laughing matter. He might be fortunate to not end up with an extended stay in prison.

If I were Marvin Lewis...I would honestly kick him off the team..This team is heading in the right direction. This is the last thing we need. I would cut him and draft another receiver in the 4th or 5th round...I feel he will only get worse...If he gets out of both charges and Lewis lets him back I think he will continue to be trouble...Thats why they were skeptical of drafting him anyways...Cut his ass......

Yep - and so twice in the space of some five weeks we have the Bengals needing to likely alter their draft plans - diminishing the defensive haul from this draft.

Good point.

Is the other situation the Palmer injury(I assume so) and if so what do you think they'll do differently in the draft because of that?

I'm not certain that this will make WR an issue of need for the draft. The Bengals still have Kelly Washington, has proven himself to be a capable 3rd WR, and Kevin Walter, a guy with whom I have been very impressed when he has been in at receiver. Also, it will be interesting to see if Tab Perry gets a shot at the 3rd spot. He showed great speed and ability in open space returning kickoffs and I would love to see what he can do at WR.

I would predict that the Bengals will take a WR no earlier than the 5th or 6th round, unless there is a guy who has, for whatever reason, stayed on the board significantly longer than he should have. (ala taking Henry in the 3rd round last year.)

Just my thoughts. If I knew what I was talking about, they would probably be paying me. :)

BK is once again spot on.

Shouldn't change the Bengals draft much. I think Kitna's poor play would be the ONLY reason to look for a QB in the draft. They are banking on CP to be fine.

Kitna will be gone to FA despite Palmer's appeals to keep Ole reliable on the squad. Still, they could conceivably get an FA QB themselves. (Though pickings are slim).

Another move by the Bengals that helps some to shore up their WR corps happened this week - one day after the Henry arrest.
LINK
The Bengals on Wednesday signed free agent WR P.K. Sam to a two-year contract. Sam (6-3, 210; Florida State) was with the New England Patriots in 2004 and ’05. He was selected by New England in the fifth round of the 2004 Draft, and as a rookie he played in two games (no statistics) before being placed Oct. 20 on the Reserve/Injured list with a groin injury. In 2005, he had 4 receptions for 41 yards in preseason for New England, was waived Sept. 3, and was signed Sept. 8 to the Patriots practice squad, where he spent the full season.

Perhaps that sends a chilling message to the more talented, yet troubled Henry.

(As if Lewis' words earlier were somehow insuffuciently clear)

Prosecutors seek trial date for Bengals ’ Henry

Prosecutors in Covington, Ky., will ask a judge today to set a trial date for Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chris Henry on marijuana charges.

The rookie receiver from West Virginia was stopped by Covington police early Dec. 15 and charged with traffic violations and marijuana possession.

He paid the traffic fines, and prosecutors were considering a diversion program for the two counts of marijuana possession.
Kenton County prosecutor Ken Easterling said that Henry’s Jan. 28 arrest in Orlando, Fla., on gun charges prompted prosecutors to take the marijuana charges to trial instead of a form of probation.
