I agree, it is like they feel they have something to prove. They could have taken Sweed or Kelly and probably still have had Simpson available in the 3rd or 4th. It doesn't piss me off that he is a no one, it pisses me off that they pick a no one before they need to. There is no way Simpson wouldn't have been available in the 3rd...stupid pick.But here is my pick by pick thoughts:
1st round LB Keith Rivers: The best pick we could have made. Screw NO for taking Ellis and screw KC for taking Dorsey...there I got it out.
2nd round Jerome Simpson WR: See above...stupid pick.
3rd round DT Pat Sims: Great pick here and I really like Sims. I honestly liked Harrison a little better but Sims may have better upside.
3rd round WR Andre Caldwell: Another great pick. We need WR's, Caldwell is a blazer (4.37 I believe), and he was a good player for a good team.
4th round OT Anthony Collins: Great, great pick here. Collins has great upside, size, and he will only get better imo.
5th round DT Jason Shirley: The dumbest pick of our draft. We drafted the right position but we draft a guy that likely goes undrafted in the 5th round and a player that was suspended 3 times by Fresno State for off the field issues. Beyond that, both of Franklin Okam and Letroy Guillon were available. Other players such as Geno Hayes and Kellen Davis are available as well. We are STUPID on this one.
6th round FS Corey Lynch: He's from App. State, so I like that. Probably a special teams player.
6th round TE Matt Sherry: Never heard of him but a TE is okay with me. I would have liked to see us take Larry Grant though...we could use another LB but he just got drafted to SanFran.

I agree...Especially about Shirley...It almost seems like the bengals are out to prove they don't give a shit about winning.

Grade thus far:

1st round LB Keith Rivers: - yeah, the teams above took Ellis and Gholston out of the picture. Ever heard of trading down Bengals - take picks and draft Harvey down the line, and given the way the draft went, why not trade CJ for those '08 and '09 picks? Solid player, did fill a need, but this is one they took by default, not by playing the draft the way it should be played.
Grade B-
2nd round Jerome Simpson WR: This is probably a fellow who will turn out to be a very good receiver. But, he would have been available later.
Grade C-
3rd round DT Pat Sims: Good pick Grade A.
3rd round WR Andre Caldwell: Solid player for sure, but really, 2 WRs in the first 3 rounds? What greater signal could you give that CJ is out of there at some point. And, if so, why not get value for him? On the pick A-, on the lack of CJ trade given this pick, D.
4th round Anthony Collins - Kansas OT - because everyone knows he is so much better (having so much les experience) than say, Kirk Barton. (Not saying Barton is a better pick, but is Collins demonstrably a solid pick?) A debatable value pick. Grade C+
5th Round Corey Lynch App. St. S - I like this pick. Solid B.
6th Round - Matt Sherry TE - really? Another project TE? Grade D. Two words - Free Agency - try it next year Bengals.
7th Round Angelo Craig - UC - Name a player that wasn't on anybody's board. Yep, this is how the Bengals want to address a position of glaring need coming into the draft. Grade F (and that isn't a knock on Craig, it's a knock on
7th Round - WR Mario Urrutia - U of L. I have officially given up on their scouting department. Urrutia may end up as all world for all I fucking care. The point is, he wasn't a needed player this year - and certainly not after the first 3 rounds! Grade - Redo, Bengals Scouting Department earns another F.


Somehow I missed the other piss-poor pick in the 5th round - a position of need, but not a quality way to address that need.
Grade D.

Lynch was the player that blocked Michigan's potential game-winning field goal with Appalachian State last season that sealed one of the biggest upsets in college football history.
Cincinnati is about 100 miles away from Columbus, Ohio, which is home of Michigan's biggest rival in Ohio State University. There also is a large Buckeye fan base in Cincinnati and Lynch knows, if anything else, he will be revered for that memorable play.
"We heard from everybody--Ohio State people, Penn State people,'' Lynch said. "I had people e-mailing me that I didn't even know. It's funny to see how much fan animosity there is towards Michigan.''

My head is exploding. Agree on every point, collectively w/you guys...and that we should have sent Chad packing...for some picks!! However, one note, Shirley may end up being interesting. I'm in CA, and I've seen him play a few times last couple of years. Huge, beyond huge, 6-5 / 330 / mammoth wingspan / and, athletic...as hell. But, off field issues(can you believe this!!!) are something that, given what we've all been through, can't imagine, can't fathom, that the front office didn't due-diligence him beyond any boundaries of comprehension!!

But, if he ends up being yet another problem child, then we know that powerlifter's epilogue is correct and we need to see these suits get run out of town, Mike Brown first! For now, I give them the benefit of the doubt(final time).....but it's a very, very short leash!

CINCINNATI -- The Bengals used three of their first five draft picks on offensive players. Moments after the last of those picks, early yesterday afternoon, offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski changed from a suit into workout clothes.
"Done for the day," he said with a smile.
Not quite. For all the Bengals needs on defense and their stated desire to improve the running game, it was apparent this weekend that they are concerned about the future of the passing game, because Bratkowski stayed busy in the draft room long after his workout.

I disagree, a bit. yes, the off the field issues suck and will be a lightening rod for critics...but Shirley is bigger than Ellis, stronger than Ellis and faster than Ellis and, before he got kicked off the FSU team, was considered a late 1st round pick/early 2nd round pick. the potential for a huge steal is there if he pans out.

and if it wasn't? This IS Cincinnati...and, whether you like it or not, there is a 37,000 student state run university and a 12,500 jesuit university here and not everybody is a diehard Buckeye fan. There just happen to be more Buckeye fans than most people north of Dayton think.

Believe it or not, other than the Shirley pick in the 5th (you can't play the "we are looking for character" card when you draft a guy like this), I don't hate this draft, which is better thatn what I can say in regards to previous Marvin drafts. They had major needs in the front seven and at WR and addressed them adequately. I will give them the benefit of the doubt on Simpson in the 2nd, although I was a little bummed that they left Sweed on the board.

That's why they drafted Corey Lynch. His fiancee is Billy Graham's granddaughter and Franklin Graham's daughter. The Bengals are counting on some locker room sermons to straighten these guys out.
