Coach Marvin Lewis liked what he saw in the second half, although the Bengals never threatened to take the lead.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Marvin Lewis sounded more like the coach of an expansion team than of one with Super Bowl aspirations.
The Cincinnati Bengals had just lost 27-20 to the Kansas City Chiefs yesterday and Lewis was reduced to complimenting his team for progress.
This wasn't like the previous two losses in what is now a four-game losing streak. Losing in Seattle is no disgrace, nor is losing to unbeaten New England.
But the Chiefs? This was a team that hadn't scored in the first quarter, has a journeyman quarterback and whose running game gained 10 yards last week.

Bengals notebook
Jones is benched after Chiefs sack Palmer three times

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Levi Jones wondered at the start of the season why he wasn't starting. Yesterday, the Cincinnati Bengals left tackle had no quibble when he was yanked.
On three consecutive series in Cincinnati's 27-20 loss to Kansas City, Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen beat Jones for sacks of Carson Palmer. After that, left guard Andrew Whitworth replaced Jones and Scott Kooistra took over at guard.

Complimenting his team for progress?!?! I'm starting to lose a little respect for Marvin lewis. I know there can't be much left for him to say, but I saw very little that deserved the first compliment yesterday. If you don't have anything bad to say, then don't say anything at all. This 'Team' absolutely doesn't deserve to be complimented for anything.

Here, let me help you compose a suitable post-game speech, Marvin: "Hey, way to lose again guys. You suck!" (exit room) There, that doesn't seem so hard, does it?

Well, on the plus side Justin "franchise" Smith got his first sack of the season. Took him until game 5, now that's living up to the tag. He's on pace to have 5 for the season.

The "team" label seems inappropriate for this bunch. So coach Lewis says they're finally playing that way instead of just a bunch of individuals. Well great, it only took four years. Nice work, coach. There's no "i" in "team", but there's definitely an "i" in "quit". I guess we'll find out in the next few weeks if the coach is on to something or if it was just a mirage.

Season ends for Bengals' Perry, Kilmer

Wednesday, October 17, 2007 3:39 AM

From staff and wire reports
The Cincinnati Bengals held out hope that receiver Tab Perry and safety Ethan Kilmer could return this season. Yesterday, their patience wore out and the team placed both on injured reserve.

Perry, a solid kickoff returner, was expected to also hold down the No. 3 receiver position until Chris Henry returned from his eight-game suspension. But Perry struggled to establish chemistry with quarterback Carson Palmer and was injured in the Bengals' second game.

Bengals receiver Chad Johnson is on pace to break Jerry Rice's record for receiving yards in a season. Rice set the standard with 1,848 yards in 1995.

CINCINNATI -- Chad Johnson is on pace to set the NFL season record for receiving yards.

Given his flamboyant persona, an observer might guess he would use a glowing adjective to describe his performance. The word he used might surprise you.
"I'm playing horrible right now," the Bengals receiver said.

Notebook: Surgery won't end receiver's career

Thursday, October 18, 2007 3:41 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CINCINNATI -- Tab Perry had surgery Tuesday on the injured hip that has cut short his past two seasons, but Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said doctors expect the receiver to be able to resume his career.
During training camp, Perry said his hip had healed.
"I think internally, he was having more problems than he let on to us," Lewis said. "He spoke to someone else and they said, 'Why don't we try this now and maybe we can fix you for good?' I think he chose to take that route because he was having some discomfort. If it all goes well, then Tab should come back and be able to play NFL football."

Cincinnati offensive tackle Levi Jones, right, didn't have his best game last Sunday against Kansas City, giving up three sacks.

CINCINNATI -- Bengals left tackle Levi Jones appreciated the gesture, but, truth be told, he would rather have been raked over the coals.
As is his custom, coach Marvin Lewis showed clips of blown plays during a team meeting after a loss to Kansas City. Jones was surprised that his failed blocks on Jared Allen that resulted in three sacks weren't among them.

Anthony Nappi of Tampa, Fla., shows Chad Johnson the touchdown celebration that helped him win an online contest inspired by the Bengals receiver.

CINCINNATI -- Given the Bengals' injuries at linebacker, perhaps Robert Geathers should have seen it coming.
But when coach Marvin Lewis asked Geathers a couple of weeks ago to switch from defensive end to linebacker, he was surprised.
"I've never played linebacker," Geathers said.
But he didn't resist.

After what looked like another hapless outing in the first half, the Bengals have come back with determination in the second.

Keyed on determined rushing by Penn State undrafted FA Kenny Watson the Bengals finally took a meaningful lead, at home versus the Jets in the 4th quarter, with 6:10 to go.

21 unanswered points have been the difference - Jets untimely penalties have helped the cause for the home team.

Bengals' Johnson disputes charge he's selfish

Tuesday, October 23, 2007 3:32 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CINCINNATI -- Chad Johnson insisted he is not frustrated, but it's clear the criticism coming at him from seemingly every direction has angered the Bengals receiver.
On Sunday, ESPN's Chris Mortensen said the Bengals might consider trading Johnson in the offseason. The NFL Network reported that some members of the organization believe Johnson is angling to leave.
Others in the national media have taken shots at Johnson for his perceived selfishness. A Cincinnati Enquirer columnist, who with the receiver's cooperation wrote Johnson's biography, likened him to a scorpion that can't help but sting.

Bengals notebook: Anderson will sit out Sunday

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CINCINNATI -- So much for the Bengals establishing some continuity on the offensive line.
Right tackle Willie Anderson was listed as out on the injury report for the game Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He played most of the way last Sunday in a victory over the New York Jets.
"I was supposed to be out a month, and I missed a game," Anderson said after the game.
Anderson's streak of 116 starts ended when he missed a loss Oct. 1 to New England.

The Bengals know they must stop Steelers running back Willie Parker on Sunday.

CINCINNATI -- NFL game plans are supposed to be cloaked in secrecy. No need this week.

The Bengals know exactly what Pittsburgh's offensive priority will be Sunday in Paul Brown Stadium. The Steelers will run the ball.
"The word is on the street," Bengals defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan said. "Everybody comes in here thinking they're going to run the ball on us -- until we stop them."
