CB Ratliff's tenure ends in fourth year; Blue Adams takes roster spot as defense altered again
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

The Bengals are getting nothing from the first three picks of their 2005 draft.
Now they're getting nothing from their first two picks of the 2004 draft. Tailback Chris Perry has missed 29 of a possible 51 games because of injury and is on the physically unable to perform list.
Now cornerback Keiwan Ratliff, the team's first of two second-round picks in 2004 and the 49th overall, is gone. The Bengals waived the fourth-year player Wednesday.

Rudi Johnson, who has played in 64 consecutive games, is expected to miss a game because of a hamstring injury.

CINCINNATI -- Since taking over as the Bengals' starting running back in 2004, Rudi Johnson has been remarkably durable.
He missed the first three games of the 2003 season when he was Corey Dillon's backup but has played in 64 straight since. Johnson gutted through the 2005 season despite torn cartilage in a knee. He has played through every other ache and pain that comes with playing his position.

Stadium officials seek permission to shoot pigeons that are pooping on Bengals fans

Friday, September 28, 2007 8:23 AM

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Paul Brown Stadium officials want permission to shoot down pigeons that are pooping on Bengals fans' heads -- and in their food and beer -- during games.
Eric Brown, managing director of the stadium, sent a letter asking the city to allow stadium employees to kill the birds with an air-powered pellet rifle.
Brown says no shooting would take place on game days.

Kenny Watson, left, looks forward to a long-awaited opportunity to start at running back for the Bengals.

CINCINNATI -- Nothing has come easily in Kenny Watson's football career.

He has overcome injury, an unwanted position switch and limited opportunities. All of that, he believes, has prepared him for this moment.
With Rudi Johnson out because of a hamstring injury, Watson will start at running back for the Bengals on Monday against the New England Patriots.

Raising the bar at quarterback
Carson Palmer isn't in a position to appreciate the type of season his counterpart Tom Brady is enjoying

Carson Palmer

CINCINNATI -- Carson Palmer, ungracious host.
Tom Brady said he is looking forward to watching Palmer in person Monday night.
Palmer is a courteous guy, so it stands to reason that the Bengals quarterback would say something similar about the New England Patriots quarterback. Brady's a fellow Pro Bowler, after all. Won three Super Bowls. What's not to like?

Who'll stop rain of pigeon droppings on Bengal fans?

Sunday, September 30, 2007 4:14 AM

CINCINNATI (AP) -- The city manager told Paul Brown Stadium officials this week that they would need to exhaust other options before any permission would be granted to shoot pigeons that are pooping on Bengals fans' heads -- and in their food and beer -- during games.

If other remedies don't succeed, City Manager Milton Dohoney Jr. said in a letter that he would grant the request if stadium officials agree to use a licensed, bonded contractor with expertise in the area.

Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer is sacked by a wave of Patriots defenders in the first half.

CINCINNATI -- The New England Patriots put on display last night everything the Bengals are not.
The Patriots are seasoned and smart. They seldom make mistakes. They play as a team.
The Bengals do none of those things right now.
Cincinnati's failings were put on display in front of the nation in a 34-13 loss in Paul Brown Stadium.
"I'm just as upset, obviously, as I could be," said coach Marvin Lewis, who from the media room could be heard screaming at his team.

Injuries hit linebackers again

Tuesday, October 2, 2007 3:27 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CINCINNATI -- The Bengals' already depleted linebacker corps took another hit last night against the New England Patriots.
On the second play from scrimmage, strongside linebacker Lemar Marshall suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon. Landon Johnson, playing weakside linebacker, left in the second quarter because of an injury to his eye. That left the Bengals with only two healthy linebackers on the 45-man active list.
Anthony Schlegel started at middle linebacker because of injuries to Ahmad Brooks (groin) and his backup, Caleb Miller (back). Dhani Jones, the other active linebacker, replaced Marshall.

A pass slips through Chad Johnson's hands Monday night against the Patriots.

CINCINNATI -- Teams normally don't take kindly to charges that they are in disarray.
Disarray is the national perception of the Bengals after a 34-13 loss to New England on Monday night. The nation saw inept play and bickering. Afterward, Marvin Lewis directed a profanity-laced tirade at his players.
Yet Lewis didn't take offense when the D-word was broached at his news conference yesterday.
