Defender to help out in a hurry

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CINCINNATI -- Linebacker Dhani Jones isn't sure how he fits into the Bengals defense just yet.

He's just glad he fits somewhere.
Jones signed with Cincinnati yesterday after the Bengals cut Andre Frazier. Jones has started 85 games in eight NFL seasons. New Orleans released him at the end of the preseason, and he was waiting by the phone.
So when he was asked whether he was a weak-side or strong-side guy, he replied, "I'm a job guy."

BEREA, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns beat the Cincinnati Bengals on the football field last week, but they will lose Sunday in the contest for television airtime in central Ohio.
WBNS will air the Bengals' game Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks rather than the Browns' game against the Oakland Raiders. Both games start at 4:05 p.m.

The Browns' Joe Jurevicius, right, catches a 17-yard TD pass against the Bengals' Leon Hall.

CINCINNATI -- To hear his coaches talk, Leon Hall joined the Bengals as almost a fully formed NFL player.
They raved about his maturity. They raved about how fundamentally polished he was.
Rookie cornerbacks usually face plenty of pressure. Receivers are so talented. Schemes are so complex.

Injuries put Holt on receiving end of offense more

Glenn Holt

He took a nasty helmet-to-helmet hit last week and pronounced himself fit minutes later.

He caught a touchdown pass despite excruciating pain from leg cramps.
For Bengals receiver Glenn Holt, that's a price he's perfectly willing to pay if it will advance his unlikely NFL career.
"Once you get these opportunities, you can't let them go to waste," he said. "That's the one thing I don't do. I don't waste opportunities."
Holt has a golden one now. With Chris Henry suspended and Tab Perry out because of a pulled hamstring, Holt is expected to be the No. 3 receiver Sunday for the Bengals when they play at the Seattle Seahawks.

Bengals feel heat not to blow early chances

Sunday, September 23, 2007 3:56 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

In 2002, the Seattle Seahawks moved from the AFC to the NFC when the NFL realigned after the addition of the Houston Texans.

Talk about a good career move.
Two years ago, the Seahawks made the Super Bowl, a feat they failed to achieve in 25 seasons in the AFC.
Last week, the Seahawks lost to the Arizona Cardinals to fall to 1-1 heading into today's game against the visiting Bengals. Nobody in the Pacific Northwest is panicking. The conventional wisdom is that Seattle is a safe bet to return to the playoffs for the fifth straight season.
Last week, the Bengals lost to Cleveland to fall to 1-1. Already in Cincinnati, there is concern about the Bengals' playoff viability, and not just because of the defensive collapse that allowed the Browns to ring up 51 points.

I truly dont understand our defensive schemes. We are forced to play zone coverage because our cornerbacks aren't any good (its not like we used our last two first round picks on them or anything), and thus cant blitz. When we dont blitz, we cant generate any pressure with our defensive line because we have no good pass rushers on the team, thus giving the opposing QB's all day to pick apart our zone coverage.

While its still early, I don't think there is any way that we get the playoffs in the AFC with this defense. At the end of the season we need to let Justin Smith go, as we are paying him way too much considering how little he contributes, and figure out a way to move up to draft a stud DE like Lawrence Jackson, Quinton Groves, Chris Long or Calais Campbell so that we can start getting some pressure on the QB from the front four.

I thought they got more pressure on Hasselback than Anderson last week. Still our corners were really getting beat most of the day and the Bengals ended up losing in a very Bungle-esque way. They might as well not show up Monday night against the Pats and just rest for the following game.

Speaking of Justin Smith, he had exactly 1 tackle yesterday. No TFL's, no sacks, one stinkin' tackle. Some franchise player. I think I could do better than 1 tackle in 60 minutes of action.

This is Coach Lewis' fifth season at the helm of the Bengals. It says something that he's still drafting CB's in the first round trying to find someone (anyone) who can cover. Maybe we shouldn't have passed on Chris Gamble to take that bum Chris Perry back in the 2004 draft. Duh.

Bengals: Disturbing trends already surfacing

Rudi Johnson rushed for just 9 yards on 17 carries in a 24-21 loss to the Seahawks on Sunday.

SEATTLE -- Three games into a season that began with so much promise for the Cincinnati Bengals, the cracks have begun to show.
None are irreversible, but they have reached the point where they can't be dismissed as a one-game fluke.
"I don't want to get caught up in saying, 'It's early, it's early,' " offensive tackle Willie Anderson said. "Week by week is going by, and if you lose three or four in a row, it's going to be bad. The coaches have to figure out something. Put the right guys on the field to put us in the right positions. It's everybody, coaches and players. We've all got jobs to figure out. And the jobs get tougher."

Rudi Johnson

CINCINNATI -- Rudi Johnson might not start Monday against the New England Patriots, but it has nothing to do with his dismal statistics in a loss at Seattle.

The running back suffered a hamstring injury late in the third quarter Sunday. After the game, Johnson said he'd be ready for the Patriots. Yesterday, coach Marvin Lewis said he was "unsure" whether Johnson would be available.
Johnson gained only 9 yards on 17 carries, but Lewis defended him.

Meh, Rudi is doing too much dancing at the line this year instead of just pounding it up the middle and breaking tackles (stick to what works!). Maybe a speed back like Kenny Watson will work better for them.

Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis might be better equipped to win games and influence people after hearing Zig Ziglar.

His team is underachieving. His attitude needs adjusting. His people skills need reshaping. His leadership needs fine-tuning.
It's time for Marvin Lewis to GET MOTIVATED. Zig Ziglar and his crew of Yes! men are here to help, judging from a full-page advertisement in yesterday's Dispatch.
For a total investment of just $4.95 -- or only $19 for the entire Bengals coaching staff -- Lewis can learn to:
? Get ahead and (more important, given the outcome of the past two games) stay ahead;

For Bengals, spying leaves them wary
They're next to play Patriots, but cheating in NFL a tricky topic
Thursday, September 27, 2007 3:55 AM

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Cincinnati Bengals' practice field sits adjacent to Paul Brown Stadium in the southwestern corner of downtown, overlooked by the city's skyline.
It's a scenic view, but it can feed the ever-present paranoia of the NFL.
"When I played in Miami, our practice field had a parking garage overlooking it," Bengals defensive lineman Bryan Robinson said. "You always wondered if somebody was up there taking pictures or doing something."

Ratliff gets wish; Bengals cut him

Thursday, September 27, 2007 3:35 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Keiwan Ratliff got his wish -- belatedly.
When it became clear he would be a spare part in the Bengals defense, Ratliff, a Whitehall graduate, made it just as clear he preferred to be elsewhere. The cornerback hoped he would be released in the final roster cuts.
That didn't happen, but the Bengals parted ways with Ratliff yesterday. To take his roster spot, Cincinnati re-signed cornerback Blue Adams, who was cut Sept. 2.
