Bengals
Johnson's silence speaks to his status

Tuesday, October 9, 2007 3:33 AM

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CINCINNATI -- With the Bengals, silence can sometimes provide as much information as a monologue.
Certainly that's the case with injuries. Coach Marvin Lewis has hammered it into his players' heads that injured players should say as little as possible to reporters. The less said, the greater the odds are that a player won't play.
So when the usually cooperative Rudi Johnson declined comment about his injured hamstring yesterday, it was an ominous sign regarding the running back's chances to play Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Joseph suspended for Chiefs
10-9-07, 4:25 p.m. The Bengals have been notified by the NFL that cornerback Johnathan Joseph has been suspended without pay for one game and it will be this Sunday at Kansas City. A Bengals press release issued Tuesday said the suspension is for violating the NFL Substance Abuse Policy. Joseph will also be fined an additional game check for the week following when the Bengals play the Jets. Joseph's penalty relates to his arrest in Kentucky last January for possession of marijuana. After accepting a diversionary arrangement, he has since complied fully with all league and law-enforcement obligations in regard to resolving the matter, .

Bengals: Injuries to halt Anderson's streak

Thursday, October 11, 2007 3:43 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CINCINNATI -- Through good and bad, through injuries that would have felled most players, the Bengals' Willie Anderson always summoned whatever was needed to play on Sunday afternoons.
Starting with the first game of the 2000 season, the right tackle has started 116 consecutive games.
But the Anderson who has gutted it out this season has not been the Pro Bowler of the past four seasons. The foot injury he has struggled with all year and the knee injury he suffered two weeks ago in Seattle have allowed him to play only sporadically in the Bengals' first four games.

Chad Johnson is sometimes criticized for putting his celebrity status above football; last week, he seemed to prove otherwise.
While his Bengals teammates scattered to take advantage of the bye week, Johnson stuck around Cincinnati to work on his game. He has been playing well, but he knows he has dropped some passes and made some costly mistakes.

Bengals
Going tough for NFL runners
Rudi Johnson, et al., are off to slow starts
Friday, October 12, 2007 3:37 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CINCINNATI -- They are asking the same question in Kansas City that they are in Cincinnati.
What is wrong with our running back?
The Chiefs' Larry Johnson, who averaged 4.7 yards per carry while gaining 3,539 yards the previous two seasons, is averaging only 3.3 yards heading into Sunday's game against the Bengals.

Rudi Johnson seems likely to play against Chiefs

Saturday, October 13, 2007 3:40 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Rudi Johnson might play this week, after all.
All week, the Cincinnati Bengals had been pessimistic about the running back's chances to recover from a hamstring injury in time to play Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs.
But after not practicing Wednesday or Thursday, Johnson participated fully yesterday. On the team's injury report, he is listed as probable.
"He's healthy to play," coach Marvin Lewis said, according to the team's Web site. "I'll make the decision."

Bengals' offensive line still trying to recover

Sunday, October 14, 2007 4:09 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
When the Cincinnati Bengals opened the 2006 season in Kansas City, they had plenty of reason for optimism.

Cincinnati was the reigning AFC North champion. Carson Palmer had made a remarkable return from his knee injury.
But Bengals players understood that the foundation of the team's success was the offensive line. At the time of last year's opener, it looked as if that line was ready to supplant the Chiefs' as perhaps the premier one in the NFL.
No one could have known that Cincinnati's 23-10 victory would mark the last time the Bengals' line was intact.

Smith seeking 'home' victory
Missouri native focused on beating Chiefs
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The last time Missouri native Justin Smith played in his home state, the Bengals defensive end had one of his top professional games.
In the 2006 season opener at Kansas City, a 23-10 Bengals victory, Smith tied his single-game career high with three sacks, had seven tackles and forced and recovered a fumble.
The Bengals could use another big showing from Smith today when they return to Kansas City for a pivotal game. The Bengals are trying to end a skid that has seen them lose three straight games and six of their last seven.

Weak rush 'O' meets weak run 'D'
WHO HAS THE EDGE?
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

The key game within the game for the Bengals today at Kansas City will be whether the defense can keep the Chiefs' last-ranked run offense on its back.
It's a matchup of the moveable object against the resistible force. The Bengals are 29th against the run at 152 yards a game, and the Chiefs are last in rushing offense at 65.6 yards a game. Part of the problem is Kansas City's revamped offensive line, which is playing poorly on the right side. But the Chiefs have the chance to get well against a run defense that often is friendly to struggling offenses. Worse, the Bengals have dropped to last in the league in points allowed (32.3 a game).
