Bengals have yet to fill void left by Henry
Candidates for third receiver spot have not stood out

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CINCINNATI -- His dazzling catches serve only to tease and taunt.

In a week, Chris Henry will be banished from the Bengals. After Monday night's game in Atlanta and Friday's preseason finale against Indianapolis, the third-year receiver will begin his eight-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal-conduct policy.
So in some ways Henry is like an apparition. He is seen but will soon be invisible. He can speak but has been banned from speaking to the media by coach Marvin Lewis.
On the field, Henry has been as gifted as ever. He leads the Bengals with eight catches for 112 yards and a touchdown in the preseason.
Off the field, Henry has stayed out of trouble lately, but his four arrests in a 14-month period prompted NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to impose a stiff penalty.

Bengals: Johnson eager to prove 'em wrong

Monday, August 27, 2007 5:56 AM

The Columbus Dispatch

CINCINNATI -- Rudi Johnson scoffs when he hears the whispers.

Mark it down, he says. This will be his best season ever.
The Bengals running back knows skeptics wonder about the toll of 1,039 carries the past three seasons, the highest total in the NFL. He knows some consider the decline in his per-carry average, from 4.3 in 2005 to 3.8 last year, evidence of that.
Johnson doesn't sound the least bit concerned.

If I could sum up my feelings about the Bengals Pre-Season in one word it would be - worried.

Too many penalties. No good relief for Rudi at the RB position. Did I mention too many penalties, because, it isn't just on offense, it is on both sides of the ball.

They have not finished the job, not even against poorer teams (on paper). Tonight, frankly is the the most worrying performance of all. The 3rd pre-season game is one of the best indicator papers for where a team sits. Against what should be a thoroughly hopeless team they are down at the half 13-14 - and might be considered lucky to be that close.

Unless they get another RB, unless they cut the crap out that leads to penalties on offense, unless they begin stopping even wounded teams on defense - unless all of these things happen, this is going to be a woeful and long season.

Right now, the Bengals are ill-prepared.

Our defense couldnt stop ANYONE right now. We made Joey Harrington look like Peyton Manning.

My question is this- why is it that on obvious passing downs (3rd and long), instead of blitzing hard, we decide to rush three guys and give quarterbacks FOREVER to pick apart our terrible zone coverage? We dont have a good 4 man pass rush to begin with, so on passing downs we rush three? It would be different if we had really good zone coverage or whatever, but we dont. We either need to play press-man and not blitz or zone and blitz.

Recap of Bengals vs. Falcons (or how many #7 jerseys did you count) Yahoo Sports.

Meanwhile we have the truth according to Bengals.com

An 0-3 start in pre-season, should anyone take this as a harbinger of things (not) to come? Perhaps.

The very first nationally published article I wrote (in Winner's Edge magazine) contained a football quote by Bill Parcells, the master at winning and covering preseason contests. Parcells stated, "People who think preseason football is meaningless don't know anything about football."

Preseason success is a remarkably accurate barometer in determining a teams' success during the regular season. Did you know that 30 out of the previous 38 Super Bowl champions (78.9%) won .500 or more of their preseason contests straight up? You do now! Since Super Bowl I, the 38 winning teams had a combined preseason margin of 115 - 65 - 2 or 63.7% straight up. Marv Levy was one coach who didn't take the preseason seriously; he had a losing record in three of the four preseason years that Buffalo advanced to the Super Bowl. Perhaps that is one of the reasons why the Bills went 0 - 4 straight up!

Oh yes, 2 TDS on 13 drives with the first string offense. Chilling. Not one backup kicker so the Bengals must go for 2 points. Astounding.

Bengals: Falcons move on without Vick

Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer threw two touchdowns passes in the first half.

ATLANTA -- Plenty of Falcons fans wore No. 7 jerseys in the Georgia Dome. They cheered for Michael Vick's replacement.
Joey Harrington made a good first impression on Atlanta fans by throwing two touchdown passes last night in a 24-19 preseason win over the Cincinnati Bengals. It was a much-needed salve for a franchise trying to get past the stunning downfall of its most dynamic player.
The day began with Vick pleading guilty to federal dogfighting charges in Virginia, followed a short time later by Falcons owner Arthur Blank saying he won't cut the quarterback immediately, mainly because of salary-cap issues.

Bengals running back Chris Perry, right, suffered a dislocated ankle against the Browns on Nov. 26. He has had two surgeries since then.

CINCINNATI -- After rattling off a long list of injured players yesterday, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis volunteered a name that could provide some unexpected good news.
Chris Perry has progressed well enough in his rehabilitation from ankle surgery to possibly open the season on the active roster instead of the physically-unable-to-perform list, Lewis said.

Ohio DB won't sweat Bengals' final cut

Friday, August 31, 2007 3:23 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

T.J. Wright said he'll sleep well tonight after Cincinnati's preseason finale against the Indianapolis Colts.
The cornerback from Ohio University will have done all he can to determine his fate with the Bengals. By Saturday afternoon, Wright will know whether he has beaten the odds and made it onto Cincinnati's 53-man roster as an undrafted rookie.
"I'm a laid-back guy," Wright said yesterday. "I'm going to be chilling. I'll put in my work today, put in my work Friday and go from there. (If I don't make it), it's not going to be because I didn't give effort. I'm not going to consider myself a failure."

Bengals add QB, not done
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

The Bengals made their biggest step Saturday in shaping their roster for their regular-season opener Sept. 10.
But by no means were the flurry of roster moves the last ones the Bengals will make before playing Baltimore in that Monday night game.
Even as he announced transactions that cut the team's roster to the mandatory 53 players by 4 p.m. Saturday, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis all but promised he would add a linebacker or possibly a kicker as early as this week.

Lewis answers Jones complaint
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]
1x1.gif

Coach Marvin Lewis responded Saturday to comments made Friday night by left tackle Levi Jones, saying Jones "understated how much he practiced, maybe by one-third."
Jones said he has not had enough practice time in the past two weeks to prepare fully for games and wondered aloud about his future in Cincinnati.
Jones has worked as the No. 2 left tackle since returning to practice two weeks ago behind Andrew Whitworth. With five seasons remaining on a six-year, $40 million contract extension signed in 2006, Jones would figure to be the starting left tackle as long as he is physically able.

I agree with you and that's why I feel the Bengals will finish the season 3rd in the North behind Baltimore and Pittsburgh. Now that's just a prediction, but it's an educated one at that. If anyone points to the Colts' defensive performance last year, it's not even close. Although the Bengals have effective offensive weapons like Palmer and the 2 Johnsons, it's nowhere near the greatness of Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne and Joseph Addai. The Colts steamrolled everyone for the most part, even outside of their weak division. The defense got a boost when Bob Sanders returned in the playoffs. That's the kind of effort the Bengals will need to make the playoffs. My guess right now is that they don't get it.

Ryan Fitzpatrick

CINCINNATI -- As an NFL prospect two years ago, Ryan Fitzpatrick finished the Wonderlic test in nine minutes. Few players finish the cognitive-aptitude test in the allotted 12.

Fitzpatrick politely declined to discuss the test yesterday, probably out of humility. He scored a 38, about twice as high as the average player but perhaps expected of a Harvard graduate.

Bengals notebook
Jones apologizes for remarks

Tuesday, September 4, 2007 3:25 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CINCINNATI -- Levi Jones might remain an unhappy player, but yesterday he was a contrite, unhappy player.

The left tackle apologized for his comments questioning his role on the team after Friday's preseason finale.
"A lot was said," he said. "A lot of tempers flared. I want to apologize for any distraction to the team. That was not my intent."
Jones is still unclear about his role. A league source said indications are that the Bengals will use Andrew Whitworth at left tackle against the Baltimore Ravens on Monday even though Jones has pronounced himself healthy.
"Whoever's playing is playing," Jones said. "We're all here to win."

Anderson admires Ogden's approach, jewelry

Cincinnati tackle Willie Anderson has played in the Pro Bowl after the past four seasons. His goal now is for the Bengals to win the Super Bowl.

CINCINNATI -- Willie Anderson used to follow Jonathan Ogden's career with envy. The Bengals right tackle wondered whether Ogden bothered to follow his.
Ogden was an original cornerstone of a Baltimore Ravens franchise that developed into a Super Bowl winner in the left tackle's fifth season. Drafted 10th overall, six spots after Ogden in 1996, Anderson excelled in anonymity while Cincinnati floundered for a few more years.

Great game last night, was there and now my voice is shot today. A few observations....

O-Line: Whitworth was getting mowed over by Suggs all night, granted Suggs is a beast, but we need Levi back there soon. Rest of the line was getting bullied by the constant blitzing and Palmer didn't have the time he needed to be most effective. They need to get healthy here soon if they want their offense to produce.

Rudi: Not very impressive, could blame the O-Line, but he just looked slow and the fumble hurt. Makes me wish Irons wasn't out for the year.

WR: Last night showed just how much they need Chris Henry back. Perry isn't going to cut it as a 3rd, maybe Holt will step up.

Defense: Did a great job, pickups Myers and Marshall stepped up and Landon Johnson had a great game (IMO he looks to be the most-improved defense player from last year). Brooks played fast but his lack of experience showed up on a few plays.

Special Teams: Almost laughable. Obviously for the TD they gave up, Graham's mistakes (granted he's hurt) and giving the Ravens great field position. Skylar Green did a decent job and at least didn't make any mistakes.

Neither team played great, and the Heap call was suspect, but it's still a W for the good guys.
