Police: Bengals' Nicholson arrested again

JOE KAY

Associated Press

CINCINNATI - Linebacker A.J. Nicholson was arrested on a domestic violence charge Friday, the first arrest of a Cincinnati Bengals player since NFL commissioner Roger Goodell cracked down on misconduct last month.
Nicholson already was one of nine Bengals players arrested during a nine-month span, turning the team into a prime example of player misconduct. The team had gone four months without having a player arrested.
Police in nearby Taylor Mill, Ky., arrested Nicholson after a woman called 911 on Friday afternoon to say she had been assaulted by the second-year player, said police chief Steve Knauf. Nicholson was charged with fourth-degree assault, a misdemeanor.
Goodell introduced a new conduct policy last month that stiffens penalties and holds franchises responsible when their players get into trouble.

Lewis focuses on community
Celebrity golf tourney part of foundation's charity work
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

Before he coached a game with the Bengals, Marvin Lewis started a charitable foundation in Cincinnati.
The Bengals were and remain the only one of 32 NFL teams without an in-house charitable arm. The opportunity to use the reach of the pro football franchise for widespread good was being fumbled.
Lewis seized the off-field opportunity, just as he quickly turned a 2-14 team into a competitive one with an 8-8 record in his first season.
Now four years into its existence and on the eve of its major fundraising golf tournament, the Marvin Lewis Community Fund says it has surpassed $2 million in donations and had an effect on the lives of 115,000 people.

A few hours after A.J. Nicholson pleaded not guilty to a domestic violence charge Monday, the Bengals released the lb.
Although the mother of his two-year-old child recanted her statement from Friday that Nicholson hit her, Kenton District Court Judge Douglas Grothaus chose not to drop the case and set a pretrial hearing for May 31, according to The Cincinnati Enquirer.

from later in the article

Under the NFL?s collective bargaining agreement with the NFL Players Association, teams can only release players for lack of talent.
Even before Friday it?s believed Nicholson would have had a difficult time making the roster.

Only hours after he pleaded not guilty to a domestic violence charge, linebacker A.J. Nicholson was waived Monday afternoon by the Bengals.
The Bengals cut ties with a second-year player who had as many arrests as games played in his short tenure.
"The Bengals today waived LB A.J. Nicholson," the club statement said. "Nicholson is a second-year NFL player in 2007. As a rookie last season, he played in two games (no statistics) and was inactive for 14 games."

Lewis sorry for 'profiling' remarks
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

Marvin Lewis apologized Thursday to Cincinnati Police for comments he made Wednesday on a national radio program.
"I think there's profiling, no question," Lewis said on the Dan Patrick Show. "(Cincinnati is) a small place. Our guys stand out, and they know that, and you've got to do things the right way."
You can listen to Lewis's comments at ESPN.com but you must pay a fee for their Insider access.
On Thursday, Lewis released a statement to local media through the Bengals' public relations department.
"Yesterday, I gave a radio interview and made some comments that did not illustrate the high regard I have for the Cincinnati Police Department," Lewis said. "I apologize that what I said did not reflect my true feelings."

Violation lands Nicholson in jail
BY JIM HANNAH | [email protected]

A.J. Nicholson was freed on a $500 bond after being arrested in Kenton County on a charge of domestic violence.
He did not get that opportunity in Florida.
Law enforcement officials in the Sunshine State confirmed Friday that the former Bengal was being held in the Leon County, Fla., jail for allegedly violating his parole. He will remain behind bars until a probation revocation hearing, Florida officials said.
The Bengals organization waived the linebacker Monday.
Nicholson was put on two years' probation in Florida after serving a 60-day sentence at a sheriff's work camp last year for breaking into the apartment of a former Florida State teammate.

Deltha O'Neal

CINCINNATI -- Carson Palmer said that when he thinks of the Bengals defense, Deltha O'Neal is one of the first players who pop into his mind.
That may have been a good thing after the 2005 season.
But to be the reigning poster boy of the Bengals defense now doesn't elicit such warm feelings.

Palmer back at full strength for Bengals

JOE KAY

Associated Press

CINCINNATI - The high-tech, hinged knee brace hangs from a hook in Carson Palmer's locker, a symbol of how far the quarterback has come from his career-threatening injury. A year and a half later, he doesn't even need a brace.
Palmer is back to full health and playing at full speed during the Cincinnati Bengals' weekend minicamp, a tantalizing sign for an underachieving team that failed to make the playoffs last season.
This year, there are no excuses.
"It feels good for him," running back Rudi Johnson said. "He doesn't have to answer as many questions about the knee. I'm happy for him. At the same time, it's definitely a good thing on the field. Having your leader back going into minicamp and training camp healthy makes everything better."

Bengals fine-tune RB slot
Searching for right mix at running back
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

In 2005, when home-run threat Chris Perry enjoyed his only healthy season of three in the NFL, the Bengals' offense had nearly a two-minute edge in possession time and converted 42.9 percent of its third downs.
In 2006, when Perry played in just six games, the Bengals had almost a three-minute disadvantage in time of possession and converted just 35.8 percent of their third-down plays.
Looking to 2007, with Perry facing more major rehabilitation and unable to put weight on his left ankle, the Bengals decided to invest their second-round draft pick in another running back - Auburn's Kenny Irons - who could complement featured back Rudi Johnson.

WR Perry on track to be team's No. 3 guy; If healthy, he could fill Henry's position
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

Though suspended for the first eight games of the season, wide receiver Chris Henry continues to practice.
But Tab Perry, a fellow 2005 draft pick, has the inside track on the job as the Bengals' third wide receiver in Henry's absence.
Perry is coming off a season-ending hip injury that cut short what had started as a promising year. Perry's role had expanded offensively, and he had five receptions for 81 yards in the first two games.

Ahmad Brooks, standing up the Panthers' DeShaun Foster during a game Oct. 22, has the talent to end the Bengals' revolving door at middle linebacker.

CINCINNATI -- In terms of physical gifts, Ahmad Brooks has it all.

But in the NFL, it's not all about, Does he have it? In some cases, and certainly in Brooks', the pressing question is, Does he get it?
Put more bluntly, does he have the maturity to convert his immense talent into the type of production and leadership the Bengals need at middle linebacker?

Marvin Lewis came off as pretty ridiculous last week with his comments regarding arrests and if "any players in the locker room had been arressted this year". Ummm, no Marvin, none have been arressted thus far this year, b/c you just released the dude you guys drafted who allegedly raped a chick in college, stole from a teammate, and got tasered at a club. Congrats on the strong message sent to your team for cutting a reserve linebacker who will be arressted yet again in 7 or 8 months if you believe in the law of averages. If the report circulating about Odell Thurman assaulting the guy in Georgia proves to be true, there will definateky be a lot of egg on his face.
