Not a bad pickup, most likely a special teams move. The guy had 19 ST tackles last year, so he would be a welcomed addition after losing Stewart, Wilkins, and Kaesviharn from the ST units.

I also saw today that Justin Smith has finally signed the one-year tender offer.

Agreed, Blue will be a special teams player, and fill in here and there as a db. Some of the stuff I have been seeing says he really likes to hit, so maybe he can knock some balls lose on punt and kick returns, along with opening some holes on our returns.

Bengals sign Smith
But long-term contract still possibility
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

Though the Bengals trumpeted Tuesday's signing of Justin Smith to a one-year tender contract, it was the inability to reach a long-term deal with the defensive end that prevented the Bengals from being more active in veteran free agency.
Smith signed the tender of $8.644 million offered by the Bengals when the club designated him its franchise player as an unrestricted free agent. His tender is the average of the top five salaries for defensive ends across the NFL in 2006.
Smith's $8.6 million salary cap number is second on the team to quarterback Carson Palmer's $13 million. Right tackle Willie Anderson and wide receiver Chad Johnson have cap numbers of $8 million. The salary cap for NFL teams is $109 million for 2007.

Well, since he loafed around until his contract year and then suddenly started playing like he's capable, it might not be a bad thing to keep him in a free-agent year situation. It might be the only thing that can make him produce.

Bengals shore up defense
Bresnahan praises LB Hartwell for his physical style
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

The Bengals signed their third defensive player of the week Friday and inched closer to adding a fourth.
Finally, linebacker Ed Hartwell - who had agreed on terms two weeks ago with the Bengals - signed his name to a one-year, $1.5 million deal.
"You can be a nice guy off the field, but when you play defensive football, you don't want to be nice on the field," Hartwell said Friday. "We have some veterans, like Sam (Adams) and others, who have a lot of experience.

I thought the Kenderick Allen signing meant the end to Thornton's Bengal tenure, turns out it was Sam Adams.

Bengals release Adams

Bengals.com

Just 13 months after signing three-time Pro Bowler Sam Adams to anchor their run defense, the Bengals terminated his contract Monday to make way for younger defensive tackles.

The move comes the same day they announced signing Kenderick Allen, a fifth-year player with the Packers in 2006, two weeks after they drafted Oregon?s Matt Toeaina in the sixth round, and three weeks after they signed Denver?s Michael Myers in free agency. The move also basically assures second-year man Domata Peko starts next to John Thornton in the middle of the Bengals 4-3.

I'm wondering if some of the injuries that he admitted that he played with last year were a little more serious than anyone let on, and they just have never gotten better.

Thurman has 'an opportunity'
NFL must reinstate him; shedding Adams saves $1.2 mil
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

In a radio interview Monday night, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said there would be an "opportunity" for linebacker Odell Thurman to return to the Bengals next season, if Thurman is reinstated by the NFL.
Thurman was suspended for the 2006 season because of substance-violations. He led the team in tackles as a rookie in 2005.
Thurman can apply for reinstatement on June 11.

Palmer has team feeling better
Goal from Day 1 is to improve completion rate
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

The No. 9 white practice jersey blended with Bengals teammates Tuesday, just as its absence stood out a year ago.
Without fanfare, Carson Palmer was back under center for the first of 14 offseason Bengals practices.
In 2006, just four months after reconstructive knee surgery, Palmer was rehabbing furiously in the hopes of getting on the field. All eyes were on backup Anthony Wright, newly signed and the favorite to start the season opener Sept. 10 at Kansas City.

O'Neal a no-show for Bengals
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]
1x1.gif

The Bengals' 14 offseason practices, the first of which was held Tuesday, are wink-and-nudge voluntary.
A player, especially one coming off a shaky season, had better be there. His presence says almost as much as his performance.
So when cornerback Deltha O'Neal failed to show Tuesday, his absence was noted.

Lewis backs off talk of Thurman return
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

The day after he spoke optimistically about the possible Bengals return of suspended linebacker Odell Thurman, Marvin Lewis clammed up.
The Bengals head coach turned reluctant to talk about Thurman on Tuesday, after the team completed its first of 14 offseason practices. Thurman is in alcohol rehabilitation in his native Georgia.
On Thurman's playing status, Lewis said: "I don't have to worry about that until he gets an opportunity from the NFL. Then we'll evaluate. I think he's made progress."

More bad news from Bengal-Land as off-the-field behavior is back in the news.

Linebacker A.J. Nicholson is being processed at the Kenton County Jail on a domestic violence assault charge.

Taylor Mill Police Chief Steve Knauf tells Local 12 a woman at Nicholson's apartment told the officer Nicholson punched her in the eye. The officer observed the injury and took Nicholson into custody.

You are right about him knowing what he drafted. The same can be said aboutOdell Thurman who had problems in college. The one that really surprised me is Ahmad Brooks. He gets kicked off his college team, and then Lewis drafts him in the 3rd round of the supplemental draft. Most teams were surprised that the guy went that high. His college coach was an NFL coach and kicked him off the team. He let most of his friends in the pros know Brooks was a bad apple, but it didn't stop Lewis from getting him. IMO, it's only a matter of time before he is in trouble.
