Bengals defense gets a boost
DT Myers added; Johnson signs 1-year deal
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

The Bengals bolstered their 30th-ranked defense Friday when they announced the signings of two players who figure to play a lot of snaps in 2007.
Defensive tackle Michael Myers, who started 16 games for Denver in 2006, signed a two-year contract with Cincinnati. He should add experience and run-stopping ability to the rotation at tackle, teaming with projected starters Sam Adams and John Thornton and promising second-year player Domata Peko.

Concern over cornerbacks
Bengals' search for a shutdown DB could start up again
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

As the draft approaches and the Bengals are poised to draft a cornerback on Day 1 for the third time in four years, the question can be asked:
What about Keiwan?
Keiwan Ratliff was the Bengals top second-round pick, No. 49 overall, in 2004. Yet, based on playing time and the locker room undercurrent, Ratliff appears to have fallen out of favor as a cornerback with defensive coaches.

Linebacker Miller signs for one season
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

The Bengals signed their fifth and final restricted free agent Tuesday, bringing linebacker Caleb Miller back into the fold for one season. Miller signed the one-year, restricted free agent tender of $850,000.
Previously, the team had signed restricted free agents in linebacker Landon Johnson, cornerback Greg Brooks, punter Kyle Larson and offensive lineman Stacy Andrews to one-year deals.
Miller is expected to compete with Ahmad Brooks for the starting middle linebacker job this coming season.

Bengals doing less with less
Adding personnel staff would cost dollars, but make sense

On Draft Day, the Bengals have what everyone else has: a board of names crammed with more information on each potential draftee than the CIA has on Castro. They can tell you how long it takes Darrelle Revis to run 40 yards, what Aaron Ross leaps vertically (tall buildings in a single bound!) and whether Michael Griffin prefers Skippy or Jif.
They have all the data and most of the intangibles. What they don't have is enough eyes, ears and opinions. They lack numbers. This hurts them more in the pro personnel area than it will today. But it hurts today, too. Yet Mike Brown likes his personnel department the way it's always been. Little.

Bookends at cornerback
Hall and last year's No. 1 pick, Joseph, should help pass 'D'
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

In the first 38 years as a franchise, the Bengals did not draft a true cornerback in the first round.
In selecting Michigan's Leon Hall with the 18th overall pick Saturday, the Bengals now have taken first-round cornerbacks two years in a row.
Bengals coaches would not anoint Hall an immediate starter, but he is expected to contribute right away on defense and special teams. He joins Johnathan Joseph, the first pick in 2006, as the cornerbacks of the future.

He should offer a changeup to Rudi
BY KEVIN KELLY | [email protected]

During a recent phone conversation with Marvin Lewis, Kenny Irons implored the Bengals head coach not to forget about him on draft day.
The Auburn tailback, twice named to the All-Southeastern Conference first team, was following the NFL Draft with friends and family inside a trailer at Dacula (Ga.) High School when he got his wish Saturday evening. The Bengals selected Irons in the second round with the 49th overall pick.
"Oh, I'm excited," he said. "I'm trying to smile to hold my tears back. It's great. I'm loving every minute of it."

Bengals notebook
Still building through the draft
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

The Bengals have built their team through the draft.
Not counting the most recent draft picks, selected in Rounds 1 and 2 Saturday, the Bengals finished the 2006 season with 28 of their own draftees on their 53-man roster.
The Bengals ended the season with the fourth most draft picks on their roster.

Lewis sticks to script, finds firepower in Irons

By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CINCINNATI -- Kenny Irons had a funny line about his tiny hometown of Dacula, Ga.

"You kind of have to get lost to find it," the Auburn running back said.
In a way, that description could be used to describe how the Bengals ended up with Irons in the second round of the NFL draft.
The Bengals were believed to be intent on taking a defensive player with both of their draft picks yesterday. Offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski even said half-jokingly that he considered not bringing his sports jacket because he didn?t expect to be needed for a news conference.

Hall good fit for Bengals

Sunday, April 29, 2007 7:20 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CINCINNATI -- A year ago, the Bengals had to do some projecting when they took Johnathan Joseph with their first-round draft pick.

The Bengals went back to the cornerback well yesterday to take Leon Hall. This time, they don?t have to imagine what they?re getting.
Joseph had only 14 games of college experience at South Carolina. Hall, selected with the 18 th overall pick, played in 50 games for Michigan, including 37 starts.
"He fit everything we were looking for," Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said. "He was very productive, made plays and has the skills and ability for the position. He has just been an outstanding player and been a very intelligent player."

Agent: Hartwell in fold
By GEOFF HOBSON
May 3, 2007

Updated: 5:15 p.m.
The Bengals have agreed to terms with veteran linebacker Ed Hartwell on a one-year deal, according to his agent, Harold Lewis.
Hartwell?s reunion with Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis, one of the men who drafted him in Baltimore in 2001, has been five years in the making. Speculation is he?ll get a shot at the starter?s spot at the right outside spot as the club?s most experienced backer in the wake of Brian Simmons? release. Hartwell has played in 77 NFL games, virtually two seasons more than the next linebacker on the roster, Landon Johnson with 48 games.

I assumed this would eventually happen the way they avoided linebacker in the draft. I love the signing. Also, it's a one-year deal, so Hartwell will be going out there to play for a new, fatter contract.

Adams
Of the 19 players the Bengals brought in for tryouts this past weekend for rookie camp, only veteran cornerback Blue Adams stuck with a two-year contract Monday.

Adams, in his fourth NFL season, played in all 16 games with Tampa Bay last season and 37 total wth the Bucs and Jaguars.
The 5-10, 184-pound is a Miami, Fla., native who played at the University of Cincinnati. He figures to compete with Keiwan Ratliff and Greg Brooks for the spots behind starters Johnathan Joseph and Deltha O?Neal and first-round pick Leon Hall, as well as being a factor on special teams.

Not a bad pickup, most likely a special teams move. The guy had 19 ST tackles last year, so he would be a welcomed addition after losing Stewart, Wilkins, and Kaesviharn from the ST units.

I also saw today that Justin Smith has finally signed the one-year tender offer.
