From his glass house ? disguised as a Los Angeles studio ? nationally syndicated Fox Sports Radio talk-show host J.T. the Brick (real name John Tournour) unleashed a barrage of rocks at the Cincinnati Bengals and head coach Marvin Lewis this week.
Calling the Bengals a national embarrassment because of nine player arrests in 12 law-breaking incidents since December 2005, J.T. the Brick blames Lewis for all the nastiness in Cincinnati, saying Lewis should be fired.

Quarterback Doug Johnson agreed to a one-year contract Monday with the Bengals, staying to be Carson Palmer's backup.
Johnson hasn't thrown a pass in a regular-season game since 2004. He signed with the Bengals as a free agent last February, when it was unclear whether Palmer would be recovered from reconstructive knee surgery in time for the season.

Smith gets franchise tag
Lewis: Allows time to strike long-term deal
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

Bengals fans should not anticipate much free-agent turnover this offseason, and to prove their point, the club designated defensive end Justin Smith as their franchise player Thursday.
Though he will be an unrestricted free agent March 2, Smith's designation will make switching teams difficult.

Bengals say character counts
Team will look for defensive standouts, good guys at scouting combine
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

Preparation for the NFL draft hits high gear this week when the annual scouting combine starts in Indianapolis. The draft is April 29 and 30.
And despite pressing needs on defense, compared to few on offense, the Bengals will continue to look to add the best player available - regardless of position, coach Marvin Lewis told The Enquirer.
Player interviews and workouts - speed, agility and strength - will start Thursday at the Indiana Convention Center and RCA Dome.

Simmons? release creates options
Thursday, March 01, 2007

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Brian Simmons believes he has plenty of football left in his 31-year-old body.
If he does, he?ll be proving it outside of Cincinnati. In a surprise move two days before the start of free agency, the Bengals yesterday terminated the linebacker?s contract. Simmons, a nine-year veteran and a first-round pick in 1998 who started 115 games for Cincinnati, was due to make $3.3 million in 2007.

The release of linebacker Brian Simmons on Wednesday freed up more than $3 million in salary cap room for the Cincinnati Bengals, but don?t expect them to make an immediate splash on the free-agent market. Unless coach Marvin Lewis was aiming for misdirection when he spoke to reporters at the NFL scouting combine a week ago, Cincinnati will be looking inward in free agency, which begins today.
