I read his salary is $50 million and the other $200 million is endorsements. Still, making $10 million a year in a floundering league... MLS is banking on Beckham selling out stadiums and selling football-like numbers of jerseys... not going to happen in the USA.

Beckham says he's coming 'to make a difference'

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- David Beckham has conquered the rest of the world as the most recognized soccer player around. Now, he's ready to take on the America.

Wearing a black suit with white shirt and black tie, Beckham shared his thoughts a day after agreeing to a five-year contract with the LA Galaxy that could be worth $250 million.
"I'm coming there to make a difference. I'm coming there to play football," Beckham said Friday via satellite from Madrid. "I'm not saying me coming to the States is going to make soccer the biggest sport in America. ... But I think soccer has a huge, huge potential. I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't believe in this project. This could create something that we've all never seen before."

Can Beckham appeal to L.A. Hispanics?

By PETER PRENGAMAN
Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Whether David Beckham's American adventure proves a financial boon or multimillion-dollar blunder for Major League Soccer could depend on how well Beckham wins over fans such as Rodrigo Diaz.

Diaz emigrated from Mexico when he was 14, plays soccer with his friends at a local park and occasionally goes to watch the league's two Los Angeles-based teams, Chivas USA and the Galaxy.

Good read, but this is actually a move to get more non-Hispanic fans to go to LA Galaxy games. Europeans and Americans are very familiar with Beckham, and I think that is the market MLS wants to target here.
Given Chivas' Mexican pedigree, and what I saw at the (real) Chivas - Barca game this year -- they've got a stranglehold on the Mexican fans. I'm sure some Mexicans support the Galaxy too, but I would be astounded if there wasn't a far larger base for Chivas. This is also reflected by the fact that LA Galaxy answer the phone in English, and Chivas answers in Mexican -- and then acts befuddled that somebody who doesn't speak Spanish is actually calling them.
More anecdotal evidence, when I went to see Real Madrid play DCU in Seattle, there were almost no Mexican fans -- despite the Real factor. That makes 60,000+ people who aren't even half hispanic watching a soccer game in the US. That is what MLS wanted, and I'm sure they noticed a huge contingent of the fans came in Beckham jerseys and were screaming like 12-year-old girls everytime #23 got the ball.

Lowest Selling Lot At Auction

February 27, 2007 -- The citizens of Southern California are unexcited about their $250 million man, David Beckham, who is coming to play for the L.A. Galaxy soccer team. Despite the charms of auctioneer Sharon Stone, the lowest-selling lot at the Elton John AIDS benefit on Oscar night was a private soccer lesson from the Brit, which went for $70,000. "Guess it shows how much Americans care about soccer," quipped one guest. The embarrassing bidding prompted Brandon Davis to tell his friends, "Let's get the [bleep] out of here."

Fox Sports update:

David Beckham's return to form has taken a new twist.

A bad twist of his right knee.
The Real Madrid midfielder, who has played so well since being reinstated last month that rumors of a recall to England's national team had been swirling, will be out of action for about four weeks because of sprained knee ligament, the team said Monday.
An MRI scan at the team's Valdebas training ground confirmed the injury to the 31-year-old former England captain, which occurred during Madrid's 1-1 draw with Getafe on Sunday in the Spanish league. "The Briton is suffering from a second-degree sprain of the internal lateral ligament of his right knee," Madrid said on its Web site. "He is expected to be out for about four weeks."
