Beckham coming to MLS?

Thought it was interesting that he won't be joining the team until August (which is right around the time when teams will be qualifying for the playoffs), which is when his contract expires with Real Madrid.
August works out great for MLS, it is a period of downtime in the major US sports leagues, as neither the NHL, NBA, or NFL are in regular season action and the MLB is in its dull period between the All-Star break and the playoff stretch.

I wonder if any US TV networks make a bid to get national broadcast rights for MLS? People will tune in, if only once to see what all the fuss has been about for the past ten years.

$250 million for 5 years.

Seems a little pricey for such a fledgling league to shell out.

$50 million per year if it all salary and bonus would be significantly over the odds for a player of Beckham's capabilities, age and marketability. Even with sponsorship deals Beckham made less than $23 Million in 2006 (Source Forbes). His salary and bonus? $8.1 Million per annum - for which he would play a much greater number of games than will be the case in the MLS.
That $50 Million figure may of course be misleading.
It will be interesting to see how this deal is structured, and I don't just mean the usual splits between salary and bonus. I mean in terms of who beyond the club ownership is pushing money into the pot. The press is writing this up as if all $50 Million comes out of the Galaxy's hide. I suspect that the designated player rule also allows other outside interests to compensate the player - so this could be, say, $8 per annum from the Galaxy ownership - remainder based on underwriting provided by sponsors on behalf of the Galaxy owners. An exchange of dollars.

Even if the above is so, it remains an over-payment for a player past his prime, no matter the name recognition. Beckham might still be a top 50 player, but this deal makes him the highest paid soccer player in the world - that is simply ridiculous. Guess MLS couldn't entice a truly top-flight player away from Serie A or the Premier League, regardless of the gaudy baubles thrown at his feet.

Maybe one day they will have that muscle, but not today.

sangk- right on. I wasn't sure of the exact figure, but I knew that LA was going to be paying him a 7 figure salary, not an 8 figure one. That total has to be GREATLY inflated by sponsorships and such, which were said to be included in his $250mil contract.

Wasn't Freddie Adu (sp?) supposed to take soccer mainstream a couple years ago? That worked out really well.:roll1:

The way soccer is potrayed in this country (even by ESPN and other national sports media), soccer will never be "mainstream". It will never be as big as the NFL, NBA, or MLB in this country. That said though, MLS is here to stay. Garber has done an amazing job with the league since he's taken over, and the league will continue to generate revenue and fans. Whether the media outlets ever come around to accepting this is their perrogative.

I like the other football a lot (go Hoops!), but not even I am very intrigued by this. I find MLS unwatchable, and I think they've done a horrible job organizing the league. The on-field product outright sucks. USL is just as competitive, and doesn't come with the all the bs media stunts the MLS pulls to keep getting attention.
The good thing for the Galaxy is that Beckham will be good on the field for years to come because his biggest assett has always been set pieces. He's never been good at linking defense to the attack and can't tackle to save his life, so nobody is expecting a fast player or a hard worker or anything. But he can be the best freekick specialist in MLS for years to come.
I think the most intriguing thing about this deal, is how pretty-boy Landon will cope with being upstaged on and off the field. Remember, Landon hasn't just been the face of the Galaxy, but the MLS and US team. Now he's completely outclassed.

The 31-year-old will earn a reported ?128m over five years after agreeing to leave Real Madrid for the Major League Soccer side at the end of the season.
?128,000,000.00 over 5 years
?25,600,000.00 per year
?492,307.69 per week
?70,329.67 per day
?2,930.40 per hour
?48.84 per minute
?0.81 per second

Seems I need to start practicing more.

Best part of this deal, IMO. I'm not that big of an MLS fan, but having Landon Donovan, an overrated nancy boy who couldn't even cut it an Leverkusen, as the face of my country's domestic league is just embarrassing.
