New Orleans' historic French Quarter was spared the worst of the flooding from Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Eclectic shops line the neighborhood's streets, which are within walking distance of many of the city's major hotels.

After Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, many questioned whether this city, founded in 1718, would survive to see another Mardi Gras.
Although pockets of the city are still hurting badly, other neighborhoods, especially those popular with tourists, have come back, maybe better than ever.
GETTING THERE
New Orleans is about 900 road miles from Columbus. There are no regularly scheduled nonstop flights from Port Columbus to Louis Armstrong International Airport in New Orleans, although many airlines offer connecting flights.

NEW ORLEANS -- There's no sadder sight than a hotel mini-bar in the French Quarter.
Fortunately, Buckeye fans who follow the team to the Bowl Championship Series title game Jan. 7 probably won't be spending much time in their rooms. In New Orleans, where the good times are rolling again, no one should.
The city is back on its feet after Hurricane Katrina -- the storm that devastated it in 2005 -- and is eager to welcome back visitors, said Mary Beth Romig, a spokeswoman for the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau.
